Across, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's wrestling with the viability of extending his measly Fiction Corpus with a history of art ideas; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the idea of enacting English as an international language for the world. I don't trust in the demoralizing strategy by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Reenforcing one's dexterity with a language isn't like introducing a cleaner piece of coal. A language - a common tongue - isn't just an instrument that you can learn to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A living language cannot be segregated from the competing values of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a man recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A good teacher must create a strategy for introducing it; the bravest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of written works of varying scope and consistency. They could include everything from a book about literature to some real ghost stories. I created my "lowly" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have classified them, reformulating them - not just to teach an American tongue but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to prod that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

On the second to last weekend of June, 2011, I had joined my fellow naturists at a gathering of the Naturist Society in rural Pennsylvania. The next day I left on a flight for Europe. By the end of the week I had unexpectedly met another naturist, a woman, who was destined to accompany me on a tour of Europe's great naturist resorts.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

Being from America, all I had to do in Europe was turn on the radio to hear an American song. All I had to do was walk into a movie theater to see an American movie. To be understood all I had to do was speak English. Being from Poland, she couldn't stand listening to the radio for all the political nonsense being bandied about. She didn't like watching American movies because she claimed they all ended the same way. She didn't want to speak English with me because she not only wanted to say things correctly but she wanted to say them her way and nobody had ever succeeded in teaching her how. I desperately wanted to understand. She wanted to be understood.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Across

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word across in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word across, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word across is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Across in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Finally, in between the mirror and the end of the hall was another door which led to a salon, infrequently used, and from which a sliding door opened onto a balcony which overlooked the alleyway, across which, of course, was a building which, at that time, was occupied by Jesus's men.

The plan required four people to execute.

Verses 1139-1140 from the chapter called Security

I gave Julia some money and told her to go to the booth across from the one with the monkey in it. "Tell them to go find another seat," I said. She nodded and left.

Verse 429 from the chapter called Bohemia

Sapper and the girl across the street had some kind of 'thing' going - whatever it was, they had to keep it secret from the girl's father. He was building something: there were building materials all over his house and property. One day, the girl was showing us something new.

"It's glass," we said.

"No," she said, "it's Plexiglas."

"What's that?"

"It's stronger than glass."

"What?"

"It's indestructible," she said. She stomped on it.

"That's bogus," we said. We stomped on it too. Nothing happened.

"See!" said the girl.

"I don't believe it: of course you can break it." We tried bouncing basketballs on top of it.

"See!" said the girl. "It's indestructible."

"I can break it."

"No, you can't."

"Yes, I can," said Sapper.

"Go ahead and try," said the girl.

Verses 207-221 from the chapter called Childhood

Getting off at the station, I walked south to the main branch of the Oder. On the other side, Wroclaw University sprawled itself across the bank. Its distinguished halls were said to be occupied by terrorists. University Bridge was being guarded by Union troops. Good thing I was turning left. When I got to Prusa 42, I pressed all the buzzers. Somebody let me in. On the wall, I saw the name Rothko written across one of the mailboxes. I'm in the right place, I thought to myself. Two flights of stairs and there it was: Marc Rothko, number four. I knocked on the door and waited. The opposite door opened.

Verse 797 from the chapter called Adolescence

"From across the room, he said, 'No, it's not.' I thought I was going to die. He starts walking across the lounge and I was screwing and screwing and screwing. The old valve was lying in my lap - do you understand? I was on a chair next to the radiator - my heart was pumping so fast. I was lucky enough that I had gotten the valve on in time; one second later and he would've seen me putting it on. That would've been a disaster. But I spread my legs and the old valve slipped in between. Leonard saw. When he came up, he gave me a quizzical look and said, 'Do you have something in between your legs?'

"'No,' I said, but I was smiling. It was so bad.

Usage of Across in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I amused my company with a story about how I first came to London, and how I took the Underground to Leicester Square, and then proceeded to walk toward Shakespeare's Globe for a performance. "According to the Underground map," I said, "it was only a hop, skip, and a jump across the footbridge. But, after crossing the River, there were absolutely no signs for the Globe. And, with half an hour to go, the South Bank kept stretching in front of me, until finally I had to run for it. That was the first and last time I used a Tube map to navigate. It took an Olympian effort to make that show, especially since I didn't even have tickets. Luckily, they were able to squeeze in another groundling; but after hauling myself across that bank, no matter how good they were I could hardly stand the performance."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 11, The Underground, Paragraph 7

In fact, when Nike began prowling around the Bois de Boulogne that night, walking up and down the Allée de la La Reine Margo, he noticed more than one pair of gendarmes watching him from across the street, leaning against their patrol cars, arms crossed and almost uncontrollably chuckling. Nike had to give them the old 'up yours:' the one involving both arms - but, Nike was so furious, he leaned into his gesture, and his arm came up so forcefully that he accidentally punched himself in the head, which provoked, in that particular set of gendarmes who were privy to it, the most outrageous laughter ever to be witnessed in officers who otherwise were representing the only semblance of law to be seen (or cherished) in that most dark and seedy of places.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 10, Navigating the Socio-Political Spectrum, Paragraph 4

"There's one across the river at Wilson and Lexington. My aunt's latest creation is undergoing trials right now. They take two full years, testing everything possible: from disease resistance, to fragrance, to color, to the form of the flower and the bud, how it grows, you name it. The thing is, they want a rose that's beautiful and easy to grow; that way, it'll sell." Macy had a quibble with this. Of course he loved the idea of prize-winning roses, and he especially appreciated the fact that the Rose Selections took two whole years to make their judgment. "I think that's wonderfully scientific, and so incredibly patient." Most other prizes, he supposed, seemed to rely solely on people's opinions, although prize juries and judging panels that made decisions in camera were, on the whole, much more preferable than organizations like "that awful Academy that has its members mail in their votes. How do you know they even saw the nominees? that they weren't bribed?" But quite apart from the quality of judging, Macy had a problem with the way all prizes seemed to be geared toward the market. "I'm not surprised that mass-produced culture suffers from this disease; making a movie is expensive; the industry employs a lot of people, and if things don't sell, there's no turnover: people are out of business.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 9, Attacking homosexuality, Paragraph 1, Clauses 4-14

The black veil atop her head. The under-veil of white. The linen wimple. The stiff crown. The creature holding her arms back, baring her breasts. Alarmed? Preparing to run? Stay. Show that black and pleated guimpe, falling proudly across your shoulders: broad, stiff, clear-finished: a powerful serge from the fibers of a noble sheep. The chevron weave pointed down.

Where was the tunic? The woman's breasts peeked out from either side of her scapular. Black, lustrous satin. If it had squeezed itself between her cleavage, I would have plucked it out.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 22, Encountering Poverty, Paragraphs 52-53

Returning the book to the shelf, I began idly wandering around the room. I stopped in front of the wall where Albert had placed his diplomas. There was an award for winning a mathematical Olympiad in Berlin: nineteen seventy-one. "Before my time," I said to myself, and I continued walking. I stopped in front of the large bay windows. I looked outside. Already 'twas dusk. There was no one in the street. I felt uneasy. Going to the fireplace, I looked for a fagot to burn. But there was nothing. Getting up off my knees, I glanced upon a strange object on the mantelpiece. It was a piece of paper - in a large ornamental frame. Written across the top in large print was the word, 'ACCEPTED.' But most of the paper was devoted to a large mathematical equation. I reached for the frame to get a closer look, but, when I removed it from the mantelpiece, two photographs fell to the floor.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Patsy, on the other hand, was drawn by a different feast: the confident stride of youth, emerging from the sea, hands pushing back wet strands, an elbow pointing up, pulling with it a tortuous line of shade across flesh, a motion of such immense gracefulness that, once reaching its climax, it just as soon hid the soft, pale underbelly of the arm that led down to a freshly matted pit of delicately trimmed hair, still peaking from beneath those drawn shoulders, pointing to a pair of bubbly breasts, which, ever so mournfully, turned away, presenting the elegant boxwood bouts of the back, dimpled above the ass, bending now at those generous hips before pushing off with the springiness of freshly leavened dough, and disappearing like satin gauze upon the waves. Now that, thought Patsy, was a girl in desperate need of police investigation.

They boarded another bus. Shephard watched the barren landscape unfold. It was comforting to know there was no lack of rock and sand. He looked to the south. The Kunlun mountains stood like craggy knuckles. They stretched endlessly eastward. Every year, thought Shephard, the sun would melt snow from their peaks. The water would trickle into the valley. It would seep its way unseen across the desert. It would reach the main river. It would be hemmed in by the Tian Shan mountains. It would swing back into the desert. In time, it would end up on the snowy peaks once again.

Tatum chose not to change. Her cream-colored halter top and knee-breeches would have to do. She returned to the bathhouse. It was totally deserted. The sign for the radioactive pool glared at her from across the corridor.

If Patsy had stopped to think like a normal human being, he might have tried to move the arm back. Instead, he followed his suspect across the jib. He reached the trolley. He climbed down. There was a hook at the end. A long chain was attached to it. The suspect was holding on for dear life, trying to sway himself toward a pair of incredulous window washers on some nearby scaffolding.

"I apologize," said Patsy.

"It's alright," said Juanita, in a tone that Patsy could have sworn he had never heard her use before.

Lifting the table by its side, Patsy dragged it across the floor and lodged it high against a shelf. "You're so strong," said Juanita.

"How are you doing?" asked Patsy, removing the rope from the D-rings.

"Much better now, thank you."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: I lost my virginity to a married woman. Her husband was abroad - had been for several months. She did plan on joining him, but she loved sex - she admitted it - more than she loved her husband. Then again, I didn't really know the man. Maybe he was the same way. Maybe he was a scoundrel. Some women are just crazy. I was doing work on her balcony at the time. She would undress in front of me through the window. She even let me watch her masturbate. I was around eighteen years old. She was forty. I had no idea what to do. I couldn't do anything, anyway. I was surrounded by my crewmates. When we finished, we packed up and we left. I didn't see her for several weeks. In due course, we bumped into each other at one of the local pubs. She asked me how I was doing. I told her I was fine. I bought her a few drinks. She asked me to take her home. I did. On her front porch, as she was removing her keys from her pocket, she dropped something.

ALICE: A condom.

FLETCHER: How did you know?

ALICE: I guessed.

FLETCHER: Is that something you've done?

ALICE: I've never done it. I assume, if you want to get your point across, that's the most powerful way.

FLETCHER: It's true. I couldn't help myself. I had to go up to her room.

ALICE: Did you like it?

FLETCHER: I loved it - as it was happening. When we were finished, I felt as dirty as a pig. She wanted me to come every Wednesday afternoon like clockwork.

ALICE: Did you?

Usage of Across in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

By the time Captain Orbitz returned to Alliance headquarters in the Solar System two things had happened. First his DNA was found at a raided underground Wiki-en meeting place on Mars. Second and more importantly the longest-serving courier in Alliance history with a record 32 trips across branes was officially declared lost. He entered a singularity in the Cygnus Arm and two hundred fifty milliarc-seconds later his ship's quantum entangler had yet to respond. There were no sightings of him at any manned transit points in either Alliance or Alliance-friendly territory. No wreckage was found. The man like so many interstellar travelers before him had simply vanished into the two-dimensional fracas known as inter-brane space. This made Orbitz not technically the oldest man in the Orion Arm but its first born citizen. His long dead mother had given birth to him thousands of years ago. It made him a celebrity.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance based on my affection for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The orbits of Captain Orbitz as told and retold by trillions of Orion systemizens, indeed systemizens from across many a galaxy, never fluctuated from their purpose of helping Captain Tycho "Tych" Orbitz conquer his home galaxy. Tych was firm from the day he resigned his commision as a courier in the Star Alliance to the day he vanished into space. Many were afraid he would come back. Many more hoped he would. They thought he was out pirating somewhere with Lalunia, his pheromonically irresistible great-great-great-great-niece, or ruling a planet with the beautifully blue Sara Lee, or fighting the jilted queen of the Astrazeneca or playing chess with CAROline the computer that loved him. They didn't know he was dead. They had no idea he had died long before he had even resigned his commission. Before he hijacked the tesseract marking the beginning of his rebellion or piloted the stolen ship Nautilus into the singularity the man had physically removed his own dead body from the bridge. He had no choice. At the time the ship was scheduled to be inspected by Star Alliance sanitation officers.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance in the spirit of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

There is no time left to lose. My comrade and I leap into the sky. We sail across a desert. I am ashamed of the days we've wasted. All the smug, sad, shiftless, complacent, self-satisfied people we left uninspired. I see one already. He is walking along a road. He drags a shovel through the sand.

– from “Shovels Fall,” an interesting story about the cycle of rebellion throughout history

Titan's reign as the premier scientific facility in the inner solar system had showered young Pfizer T. Microsoft with a mythic sense of destiny. His great-great-great-grandfather was part of the team that had pulled the errant moon away from the clutches of its gas giant back when man's mastery of gravity was still in its infancy. It didn't matter to Pfizer that his grandfather had been more or less a sanitation engineer. He had traveled across the branes on a trip to Andromeda. To survive one plunge in a tesseract was to be lucky. His grandfather survived three. He was nearly a thousand earth years old when he retired to Peoria. The meager savings he had invested prior to his first departure had with compound interest mushroomed to the fortune that had funded two of Pfizer's three graduate degrees. Pfizer owed the old man a post on Titan.

– from “Titan's Reign,” a science fiction story that can't escape its own gravity even at light speed

Inside the cage stood a pretty little girl with the legs of a giant spider. From behind those legs a hairy abdomen suddenly poked down. It spewed a thin secretion across the faces of the men. They cried out and dropped to the floor. They started writhing in pain. Their movements jerked more and more until their limbs finally locked in a rigid posture. They heard helplessly the sound of a man calmly climbing up the stairs. It was Orbitz. The men recognized him. Unable to express their shock their eyes blazed with confusion and fury. Orbitz knelt among them. "I'm sorry," he said. "The creature poisoned you with a paralytic. At this dosage it's fatal. I didn't want any of you to die. It wasn't up to me. She didn't want to take any chances with her freedom. I wish I could stay with you until the end. Unfortuately the creature has a short refractory period. I have to surgically remove her gland before she's capable of killing me."

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
