Among, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to weigh the potential of enlarging his gigantic Fiction Corpus with a coffee table book full of abstract art prints; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the viability of harnessing English as the world's second language. I do doubt the dullish ground plan by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Polishing a person's dexterity with a language isn't like bringing about a stronger sail. A language - a common tongue - is not just an instrument that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A common tongue cannot be sundered from the philosophical currents of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. A worthy teacher must develop a plan for introducing it; the perceptive student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words based on a specific corpus, a set of written language of varying scope and consistency. A corpus could include everything from a book about literature to some really short funny stories. I burned many candles laboring on my "jumbo-sized" Fiction Corpus to form a specific sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have constructed a million words and I have reduced them, reformulating them - not merely to teach an American tongue but to describe the human soul, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

In June of 2011 I arrived in Europe for what I hoped would be a great adventure; my only concrete plan, to visit Croatia. By September I had driven 6,000 miles and visited 12 different countries, all with a woman I met on the first Friday of my trip.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

Being from America, all I had to do in Europe was turn on the radio to hear an American song. All I had to do was walk into a movie theater to see an American movie. To be understood all I had to do was speak English. Being from Poland, she couldn't stand listening to the radio for all the political nonsense being bandied about. She didn't like watching American movies because she claimed they all ended the same way. She didn't want to speak English with me because she not only wanted to say things correctly but she wanted to say them her way and nobody had ever succeeded in teaching her how. I desperately wanted to understand. She wanted to be understood.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Among

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word among in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word among, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word among is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Among in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

The fact that Jesus discovered the missing Martian among bodies of known terrorists was good for the cause. That was a big news story: LEADER OF CONFEDERATION CLAIMS MARTIAN FOUND AMONG TERRORISTS. Apart from the fact that the Confederation existed, and that Jesus had predicted the artillery assault in a sworn affidavit (which Jesus had made before dawn that night somewhere in Center City - at the office of a magistrate who was related to one of the Forty-two, and which was later published in all of the newspapers), and that the army's artillery assault had, in fact, been totally ineffective against the terrorists, the Martian was Jesus's main proof in the eyes of the public that he was not crazed.

Verse 424 from the chapter called Arms

Once upon a time, in fairy book land (that is, medieval Europe), there was a thing called common ground. This almost mythical farmland was controlled by individual farmers only during the growing and harvesting seasons. After that, until the next growing season, it was freely available for grazing and for other purposes. Land with a fence around it, or a hedge, was off limits - enclosed, so to speak. In those days, mankind ruled. Then came a time of change. A strange, new king came to rule in Britain. His name was Progress the First. His Queen was Greed; they named their son, Efficiency, the crown prince. They enclosed all the land in Britain. Other nations soon followed suit. By fiat, they encouraged the enclosure of land. Germany encouraged, then France and Denmark - even the Russian czar. But Poland was among the last: we clung to our old ways. We felt the common ground slipping from underneath our feet. Finally, we had to give way. Progress ruled.

Verse 146 from the chapter called Childhood

If your father had known that, he might have had his lieutenants wait: they were his only family, and, despite their self-respect, they were definitely not Capitalists - but neither was your father, for that matter - or at least, he didn't feel like one. In real terms, he was very much a Capitalist, a recent Capitalist; but no matter how recent one's fortune, if there was a fortune, there was a Capitalist. New Capitalists were not made all the time - in fact, for the established Capitalist, the only thing more exciting than new capital was a new Capitalist. You never knew what to expect. He or she might destroy you; he or she might make you very rich: he or she might make you a Supercapitalist. Then you would thank him or her. But if he or she destroyed you, then you might just commit murder. And the penalty for killing a Capitalist was death. The penalty for killing a Supercapitalist was bankruptcy and death. It was known to happen quite often, even among Capitalists.

Verse 21 from the chapter called Childhood

"But first," said Jesus, "we need to get a truck. Does anybody have a truck? Not with them, obviously - but somewhere nearby."

There was silence among the men. Jesus waited.

Verses 398-399 from the chapter called Arms

When I got back to Stando's house, I gave him the mellophone and said, "Give this to the army guys once they come." Going back to the Old Town, at five o'clock I attended Mass at the Jesuit church. It was full of old women; there were few men. I was the youngest thing around. How strange, I thought to myself. Does no one among the younger generation appreciate the divine service? Then I noticed something even more strange: the homily was being given by the selfsame Italian Jesuit who had whipped himself on top of Henry the Bearded's tomb just a few months ago. He was being translated by the local priest! I laughed out loud. Was he going to whip himself again? The babičkas gave me a dirty look. I laughed. This time, in the Czech Republic, the Italian Jesuit wasn't going to find many able-bodied volunteers: they were all too old and tired.

Usage of Among in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

But, when he saw his protector, he was no longer sure what he felt. There was disgust, obviously. But there was also admiration. There was, in fact, the most forceful kind of repugnance, but: there was also veneration: a deep respect for anyone who could possibly reach this position. It was incredible.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 15, The Rule of Fantasy Among Men, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-5

As far I was concerned, among the three of us, I knew the least. Of this, I was certain. I was not enjoying it, but there was nothing I could do except wait. I was pretending like I was just helping out, minding my own business. It was a terrible feeling, especially when I was alone with Albert.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 4, The Fourth Day, Part 2, The Assembly & Government Reform, Section 6, Being Obedient, Paragraph 3

Now I don't know why it has to do with St. Barbara's Day. She was one of those beautiful early Christian saints, one of those mythic virgins who was very pious among pagans and who scorned all of her suitors, et cetera. She was locked up in a tower by her jealous father - according to the fabulous legend - to prevent anyone from seeing her great beauty, but Barbara, noticing that the tower had only two windows, demanded the workmen that they build one more, which they were convinced to do because the father was off on a long journey.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 20, The Role Of Religion, Paragraph 4, Clauses 1-4

I returned to the party and everything seemed all right; no one said anything. I stole a glance at Macy but he was listening to Nike, who was still babbling on about something. There were conversations here and there, nothing out of the ordinary. The only noticeable difference I felt was my extreme fatigue, so I sat down, as far away from Macy as possible. Disregarding the party, I sat absorbed in my own thoughts, rerunning the scene in my head, imagining what Macy could possibly have murmured. What could he have said in this company, among these people oblivious to our strange and secret love? What would he probably mention, without waiting for a private moment? What would he dare whisper? These were unanswerable questions for the time being, and I had little hope of having the courage to ask them.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 9, Attacking homosexuality, Paragraph 3

Usage of Among in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The surveillance team was lucky they weren't airlocked into oblivion. They caught up with the transport. They rocketed past its puny sails. When the passengers disembarked at one of Earth's orbiting elevators Orbitz was among them. The men breathed a sigh of relief. They decided to cling to their subject like spoiled lettuce. If Orbitz was aware of them he didn't show it. He went straight to a curiosity shop outside of Lubbock, Texas. The men waited in the street in a nondescript white autovan. They plugged in their earpieces. They heard the jingling of a bell. Footsteps.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The shopkeeper never talked. The Amazon was forced to do things the old-fashioned way. He started interviewing the shop's most frequent customers. The kinder more gentle among them reported having felt a strange sense that a small trapped creature was somewhere in the area. Some of them had even gone so far as to walk around the block. The bravest had considered entering a neon building right next to the shop. They had wanted to go up to the second floor. None had been brave enough to do it.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Sir Lewis walked down the marbled hall with head held high. A sense of incipient triumph wafted between smells of old paper posters and crusty deli sandwiches and stale cookies munched on by bejacketed professors and parents out for an open house weekend. The poor fools had no idea a champion marched amongst them.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about building attachments in an unforgiving world

The case against Captain Orbitz stymied. The investigation plodded on. It was discovered that Orbitz had recently purchased a ship, the Nautilus. It was capable of inter-brane travel. He was seen in private conversation with an enginner from a planet abandoned by the Alliance to marauding Scutus forces. He was in constant contact with the lieutenant in charge of operating the prototype for an automated combat system. All of it curious. None of it meaningful. When the funding for the combat system was discontinued as part of a swath of spending cuts it generated the usual bitterness and threats among the interested parties. Among them turned out to be Orbitz. Within one microarcsecond of the announcement he tendered his resignation. It was an outrage. He was the poster child of the military. If he didn't want to be a courier anymore he could have a desk job. He could be a liaison. Or a recruiter. He didn't have to quit. According to Orbitz he could no longer serve a government that didn't safeguard its own citizens. As far as the Admiralty could tell he was referring to some outlying garbage planet. It was obscene.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written in honor of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Inside the cage stood a pretty little girl with the legs of a giant spider. From behind those legs a hairy abdomen suddenly poked down. It spewed a thin secretion across the faces of the men. They cried out and dropped to the floor. They started writhing in pain. Their movements jerked more and more until their limbs finally locked in a rigid posture. They heard helplessly the sound of a man calmly climbing up the stairs. It was Orbitz. The men recognized him. Unable to express their shock their eyes blazed with confusion and fury. Orbitz knelt among them. "I'm sorry," he said. "The creature poisoned you with a paralytic. At this dosage it's fatal. I didn't want any of you to die. It wasn't up to me. She didn't want to take any chances with her freedom. I wish I could stay with you until the end. Unfortuately the creature has a short refractory period. I have to surgically remove her gland before she's capable of killing me."
