Around, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's poring over the feasibility of beefing up his jumbo-sized Fiction Corpus with some real gay fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the viability of using English as everyone's second language. I do doubt the ritualistically sanctioned technique by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Enhancing one's mastery of a language isn't like promoting a faster boat. A language - a spoken language - isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue can't be uncoupled from the professed knowledge of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make people recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A worthy educator must develop a plan for introducing it; the perceptive pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of writing of varying size and consistency. A corpus might contain anything from a book about literature to some real bible stories. I lost many a sleepless night developing my "enormous" Fiction Corpus to form a unique genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have crafted a million words and I have investigated them, reshaping them - not merely to teach English vocabulary but to reveal the human spirit, and to prod that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Around

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word around in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word around, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word around is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Around in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

There was heresy as well. People were confused by the possible meanings of penitential flagellation. Was it a replacement for the sacrament of reconciliation? Obviously not - but what was it? Was it important if the priests weren't around when you confessed? Would you have to confess your sins again? People wondered whether a person like your father could be whipped for something that he only thought might happen.

Verse 484 from the chapter called Adolescence

Sapper stopped again. He turned around. "Yeah," said Sapper.

Verse 230 from the chapter called Adolescence

"No problem," said his uncle. "Listen: if you need some work - I mean, if you want some money: you know, for your own...whatever - you can work in the store. I need someone to watch it. You can work whenever you want. The thing is: your father: he's got some things to do: some legal stuff now that your mother's dead - God bless her soul. It's nothing you need to worry about, but: who knows how long it's gonna take? You know? These legal things always tend to take a while. Anyway, you can live with your grandmother up in Treblinka, or, you can stay at my place up in Treblinka - either way, you can come and go whenever you want. Here's the key to my house. And here is the key to your grandmother's house. I can give you the store key, too, later, if you want. I don't have much time, you know? I'm always going around, doing stuff, like..." He trailed off. "Anyway, if you want to work, we can make a schedule, you know? So: that's entirely up to you. Like I said, who knows how long things are gonna take? When you get back from your mother's village, you can give me a call - anytime. I'll come pick you up. Hey: do you mind if we stop at the warehouse for a second? I need to pick up some clothes."

Usage of Around in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I stood up blindly and started wiping the ash from around my eyes. When I opened them, I saw Nike staring at me from across the room. He had the most dumbfounded expression I have ever seen. And there we stood for a long moment: a very long moment. "Turn around," I said, and he obeyed; but, as I slowly and steadily reached for my skirt, he began to laugh - and he kept laughing. "What's so funny?" I said. "Haven't you ever seen a naked girl in blackface before?" But he couldn't control himself. He just kept laughing and laughing. When I finished dressing and came up to him with the most serious demeanor I could muster, he still couldn't stop laughing. "Never speak of this to anyone," I said. "Understood?" But he was still laughing it up. There was only one thing on his mind: "Whatever were you doing, Jo? My God!"

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 30, Presenting Oneself to a Potential Husband, Paragraph 16

I decided we should go and check, asking one of the nearest gentlemen whether a lady could possibly find a toilet in such an establishment. "Certainly," he said, "it's at the top of the stairs." But I smiled. "Is that so?" I said. "Well, you certainly didn't make it easy enough. Our friend left half an hour ago and she still hasn't come back. I'm sure there's a gentleman's bathroom around every corner." He had to laugh in agreement.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 6

While I was recollecting myself, my eyes happened upon the beggar and the crowd of students gathered around him. I watched as one of those Oxford-wearing snakes began prodding that poor despicable man; I believe he even whispered something to him - he must have: next thing I know that dirty man was raising his arm and bidding two hundred dollars. "They're financing him!" I said to myself, and turning to Luke, I looked imploringly in his eyes. He was shaking his head: "I don't have that much money," he said. It was time to take matters into my own hands.

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: Bigger than your husband.

LESBIAN: Or so I'm told. I didn't actually see them. What I saw was smaller: about six or seven feet. They had these big beaks and enormous eyes made from concentric circles: each circle colored differently from the next. They looked like crazed chickens dancing around like that. Of course, with masks so big, the focus turns to a dancer's legs, the swaying of his hips-

MS. JACKSON: And everything in between.

ALICE: Ms. Jackson!

LESBIAN: His arms are busy holding up the mask.

MS. JACKSON: I'm not surprised: making women do the work.

LESBIAN: I wonder if any Polynesians use a big mask. Would your cook know?

MS. JACKSON: Probably not. Where is my cook? Does she know the kitchen still needs cleaning?

FLETCHER: Why are you looking at me?

– ACT I, lines 424-432

FLETCHER: Oh, Money! God of first fruits! Bringer of knowledge! Harvester of truth! Where would Man be without thy cold kindness? Give me your hand. Let the lorikeets squeak out the rhythm of our steps. We'll dance a polonaise. I'll sashay you around the South Pacific. Who could prove to be a better partner? No man could be as faithful; no woman either. Even if she bleed by the moon, her temper is not as mild. Obedience notwithstanding, her character can seem, at times, positively restive. Feistiness is a woman's most vicious virtue. It can burn a man's pride even while it warms his heart. In truth, a man who marries money is liable to finding a bed so stiff the kingfisher would laugh. Without it, one would cry at night like the ghost bird. Thanks to money, nature is Man's slave. Weathering the vicissitudes of fortune, the wealthy man works the ground for as long as the ground does not work him. When that day comes, let's hope that our money has not defrauded us of our nature.

– ACT I, line 797

KOKOMO: I couldn't agree more.

ALICE: Luke was a real ladies' man before he met me. I practically had to jump into bed with him just to get kissed.

KOKOMO: That sounds awful.

ALICE: I got tired of waiting for him to make a move.

KOKOMO: In the end it did pay off.

ALICE: Sometimes you have to make things crystal clear.

KOKOMO: If only it were that simple.

ALICE: It is. Haven't you ever told Fletch how you feel?

KOKOMO: I like to pretend that I have - but I haven't.

ALICE: Do it. There's no sense in waiting. If you wait too long, you might not be around to say anything. That reminds me: Luke and I are leaving tonight. That letter he got from his manager was definitely bad news for me.

– ACT I, lines 1369-1378

ALICE: While we were swimming.

FLETCHER: Looks like Luke is gonna be sleepin' with the flies tonight.

KOKOMO: Don't listen to him. He's a meanie-bo-beanie.

ALICE: Boys will be boys.

FLETCHER: Don't be too patronizing. Girls have to be girls, too.

ALICE: Only when boys are around.

KOKOMO: That's true. When girls are alone, we act like boys.

– ACT I, lines 691-697

FLETCHER: Trouble. The Tahitians were already upset. They hadn't been given any land when the island was divided, not to mention the fact that some of them were being beaten. Naturally, they started plotting. What they didn't take into account was the fact that To-ofa-iti, the blacksmith's new wife, was not complaining. The blacksmith was important. That made her important. She started singing a song, the words of which went, "Why does black man sharpen axe? To kill white man." When Fletcher Christian heard that song, he grabbed his musket, ran to the Tahitians, charged them with their crime, and pulled the trigger. The gun misfired. Two of the men ran; the rest protested their innocence. They begged for a chance to take care of it. They decided they should try to poison To-ofa-iti's husband. He didn't fall for it. He was too smart. Ultimately, one of the Tahitian men pulled a pistol on him in the presence of his wife. Again, the gun misfired. The two of them started grappling on the ground. Who knows who would've won? To-ofa-iti, however, was not about to take chances. She picked up the pistol with her own two hands and bopped her husband squarely on the head.

ALICE: She killed him?

FLETCHER: Eventually. Things were deceptively quiet for a few weeks. It didn't take long for judgment to fall upon the poor blacksmith. The Tahitians shot him down like a pig. Ironically, that's what the other mutineers thought they were doing. Being scattered all over the island, each man heard the shots and naturally assumed that somebody was hunting. Most of them found out too late that they were the prey.

ALICE: How many of them were killed?

FLETCHER: On that day, now known as Massacre Day, five of the original nine mutineers were fatally shot. Fletcher Christian was next. He was standing in his garden. Both of his hands were on his spade. He looked up at the sky and smiled. He never saw it coming. They shot him right through the heart.

ALICE: How did the others survive?

FLETCHER: Jackson was shot through the neck but he lived.

ALICE: Incredible.

FLETCHER: It's a miracle. Ned Young slept through the whole thing. The women didn't want to wake him. They all liked him and they didn't want to see him get hurt, so they stood around his hut and guarded him. Eventually, though, even he had to get his hands dirty. The women wanted revenge on the Tahitians for killing their husbands. After Ned's consort chopped off the ringleader's head with an axe, he was made to go and shoot the last remaining rebel. That was the end of the bloodshed - not counting when he and Jackson got Quintal drunk and murdered him.

ALICE: It's so barbaric.

Usage of Around in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I thought about it. I realized how stupid I was. I should have know better. I felt charcoal crunching beneath me. It was disgusting. I huffed. I shouldn't have done that. Ash blew around me. It precipitated onto my face. I scrunched my eyes and mouth. I felt the ash speckling my skin. I breathed through my nose. Another mistake.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might ease one's fears depending on your outlook

One day out of the blue Kelly asked me for a ride home. She let me take her straight to my house. She never went back to pick up clothes or anything. She lounged around my house naked for a week. I finally told her she should either wash the one pair of clothes she had and come with me to pick up more or tell me what I should buy cause I was willing to pay for anything. She said she was fine with whatever I thought was okay.

– from “Two Years,” an adult fiction story about a female guard at a women's prison

Proctor was halfway through his part of the list when the call came through. It was a third victim. Reclining on a park bench. One arm behind the head. The other placed along the leg. Deposited in broad daylight. No witnesses. A jogger called it in. Thought it was a nudist playing a prank. When Proctor arrived on the scene he noticed how livid the body was near the bottom. The job had been rushed. There was no artistry to it. Ligature marks were clearly visible around the neck.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a nude model put in a weird position

"I'm lying," said Orbitz Nombre Trois. "I used to do that to myself all the time. I know exactly which way I came. I tried to beat myself. I got stopped for questioning on the cruise ship. There was no way around it. Just like there's no way around the gas giant. You're going to fail."

"I can't know that for sure," said Orbitz Número Dos. "As far as I know you and the other one are hallucinations."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance in the spirit of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The shopkeeper never talked. The Amazon was forced to do things the old-fashioned way. He started interviewing the shop's most frequent customers. The kinder more gentle among them reported having felt a strange sense that a small trapped creature was somewhere in the area. Some of them had even gone so far as to walk around the block. The bravest had considered entering a neon building right next to the shop. They had wanted to go up to the second floor. None had been brave enough to do it.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
