Away, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's mulling over the soundness of supplementing his run-of-the-mill Fiction Corpus with a history of reformism; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the concept of implementing English as the world's second language. I don't regard highly the unsurprising technique by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Refining one's deftness for a language isn't like bringing about a more prodigious quern. A language - a common tongue - is not merely an instrument that you can learn to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A living tongue can't be disassociated from the shared logic of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A proper educator must develop a plan for introducing it; the bravest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language based on a particular corpus, a set of written works of various scope and consistency. They might contain everything from a book about literature to a lot of fiction books. I watched many moons pass developing my "weighty" Fiction Corpus in order to form a specific sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have inspected them, reframing them - not merely to teach the English language but to reveal the human soul, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

I was American. Freshly arrived in Europe and the new owner of a '97 Ford Escort made in Germany. The only thing I had to complain about was the fact that the owner's manual was in German. She was from Poland, and a German-language owner's manual for a car bought in Poland wasn't the only thing she had to complain about. Something as small as that didn't even register.

I've never been married. I've never been divorced. I've never had kids. I've never lost my kids. That doesn't mean I can't try to understand somebody who has. By listening to Margo during our trip across Europe I started to consider her needs as if they were my own. I may not have been in a position to satisfy all of those needs, but I was able to shut up and put my own needs aside if I had to for at least 6,000 miles. We all need to be listened to and it is the one need that we all have a duty to satisfy. When somebody prays to another human, as a human you have a duty to listen. Humanity needs to start teaching itself that skill.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Away

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word away in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word away, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word away is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

I went to Stalin and said, "Put me on a truck to someplace far away."

Verse 85 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Yoga Balls?" my classmates said. "What kind of name is that? Aisles a balls? Ills a balls? Kyle's balls! Hey: it's Kyle's balls! They're notary pubic! Gross! No dirty pubic balls, Kyle! Hey: Kyle's got dirty pubes! And he's showing them! Put away your pubes, Kyle! Gross! Don't show us your pubes!"

"Shut up, John!"

"Put your dirty balls away!"

"Shut up!"

"Quiet!"

Verse 9-13 from the chapter called Adolescence

"The fucking military is collaborating - do you understand that? They're ready to shell the city - their own fucking city! Can you believe that? Instead of having the balls to go from house to house looking for those faggots, they're gonna drop shells! What the fuck is that? That's why they're trying to evacuate the Old Town. They're sayin', 'Leave your homes: go north.' They think if they evacuate Center City and Old Town by having all those people filter through the northern checkpoints, all they're gonna have left is terrorists. That's bullshit. Unless they say they're gonna shell it, not everyone's gonna leave. Not the old people, anyway: they're gonna sit at home until the radio says they're gonna drop shells - even then they're not gonna move. Anyway, who the fuck's gonna say that? That would be idiotic. That would be like saying, 'Hey, terrorists: wake up for the invasion' - so they can slip away? What the fuck is that? The only terrorist you can recognize is the one that's shooting at you. Otherwise, who the fuck is it? Nobody - it's somebody without papers - I don't know - somebody walkin' off with loot. All they gotta do is drop their weapons and voila: they melt away. It's fuckin' bullshit. It's not fuckin' fair is what it is - but that's life. That's business. Like you, you motherfuckin' pip-squeak: what the fuck is your problem, man? You have got balls to screw me up."

Usage of Away in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

How challenging it was at that very moment, when, in my troublesome state, my eye carelessly fell upon its rectangular form: how promising did that running tape recorder seem! how reckless my judgment! how beautiful its mechanical uprightness! I actually entertained thoughts of diversions, of stealing away that tape and running down Prospect Street, hiding in dark alleys, listening in frustration, running all the way to the bridge and throwing its unhelpful carcass in the river. I thought of feigning sickness, and climbing down from the second story - to what purpose I do not know, but I did think of it.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 10, Exercising Chastity, Paragraph 1

Now there is only so much I can do: I am trying to point you in the right direction. It is my belief that Indiana was infected many years ago, when you were still a child on the shores of Lake Ontario. You are not to blame; but you are no longer a child, and the first thing we must accept is that this sort of thing is indeed a verruca vulgaris: it is a common affliction, as pervasive in society as in the bodies of those infected. Nevertheless, each man must face his own feelings first, and alone; but when you do, remember: it is a thirsty saturation: these feelings; you will not satisfy yourself by slowly and meticulously draining them. You must drown them, and sincerely hope that they will eventually wash away.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 5, Warts, Paragraph 3

They were all different sizes, different colors, different breeds: I wish I could name them, but, of course, I lack any working knowledge of dogs. Nike, on the other hand, was perfectly at home. He was beginning to inspect them - God knows for what: but a certain dog (that may or may not have been a golden retriever) which had been captured by Nike, was now undergoing some sort of inspection of his coat. For all I know, he was looking for fleas; I was more interested in the owner, who was still a good forty meters away. But I could tell from where I was - in fact, over the noise of the dogs, I could hear her: but she wasn't calling them - she was crying. She was sobbing. And as the woman approached, she tried controlling herself, and her spasms gradually died down until she was right next to us.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Something caught Tatum's eye-something in the window. She checked the picture. She zoomed in. It was a reflection. "Of what?" she asked herself. She realized it was the figure of a man.

Tatum thought she heard something move. She jerked her head. She was going to scream.

Hands clamped her mouth. "Quiet," snapped Neal. Tatum froze. The man growled, "I came right after you left. This is what I found."

Tatum panted through her nose. She gulped. Neal eased off. Tatum took the hand. Moving it away from her mouth, she held it. She whispered, "I didn't do it."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring aliens and murder

The blood took a long time to drain. It washed away everything in the valley. Only the trees pinned down by the corpse remained. Gog lit them on fire. He watched the flames encompass the creature. He estimated it weighed one and a half billion grains of wheat. It might have fed five hundred people for a year.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story set in the middle east

Luka took a short cut. He turned abruptly onto the Route du Point du Jour à Bagatelle. He reached the cul-de-sac. Long green lawns glimmered through the trees. He veered onto the Route de la Longue Queue. He would shadow the Reine north. He could reach the Boulevard. Avenue Charles de Gaulle would be a stone's throw away.

There she was. She was on the right side of the road, waiting to cross. Luka slowed. He stopped in front of her. He looked into the back. Nike was still unconscious.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring prostitution

The woman threw the sword away. She crouched low. She prepared to defend herself with her bare hands. Gog sheathed his sword. He grappled with the woman. He couldn't stop smiling-even as she bit his jaw. Gog cried out. He tried to laugh his way through the pain. He pulled the woman back by her hair. He whispered, "I like you."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

MS. JACKSON: What about my heirloom?

GREY GOOSE: What heirloom?

MS. JACKSON: The one you stole.

GREY GOOSE: I didn't steal anything.

MS. JACKSON: Don't lie to me.

GREY GOOSE: I didn't.

LESBIAN: I did. I packed it away in my bag. I have two tickets for tonight's flight: one for me and one for you. Come. We'll explore the world as your ancestors did: the English and the Polynesians. They went from west to east; we'll go from east to west. We'll show the lost and the lovelorn what true devotion means. We'll scale Victory Peak in China. We'll sail the Punjab. We'll get lost in Gargas Cave. We'll bathe in the hot springs beneath Mount Hekla. We'll catch a Broadway show. We'll do some shopping at Shinjuku Station. We'll do anything your heart desires. All you have to do is liberate yourself. Let your passions run free. Someday we'll return to your native land. It won't ever be the same again. Nevermore will you be shamed. Woman, you'll have made the entire world yours.

MS. JACKSON: Nameless Pain! How am I to deny a penitent husband - newly birthed in remorse, in truth, in love, and desirous of similar gifts from me, his lawfully wedded wife, who, for so long, and with so many tears, kept watch over this heretofore seemingly endless and vain gestation - yet relish this sudden appearance of life: this infant curiosity: this foundling whose love demands more than my adoption could ever give? Oh, Homo: a thousand hearts couldn't beat as strongly as you have made mine beat. This is my home. I can no sooner leave it than change my body for that of a man. The world is yours; go out there and take it. Please leave me in peace. I beg you.

LESBIAN: I'll go. Though it pains me more than female circumcision, I'll go. I'll go because I love you.

– ACT II, lines 357-365

(MS. JACKSON starts towards the music box)
GREY GOOSE: Don't look. You'll give us all away.

MS. JACKSON: What do you mean?

FLETCHER: It'd be impolite, Mother. A certain somebody would 'face the music.'

GREY GOOSE: How much is in there?

FLETCHER: You'll keep your word?

GREY GOOSE: Yes.

FLETCHER: If I'm lucky, three thousand dollars.

KOKOMO: Three thousand dollars! That means-

FLETCHER: We can retire.

KOKOMO: Thank God. My throat can't take it anymore.

– ACT II, lines 411-420

FLETCHER: You were trying to sneak away.

MS. JACKSON: Your father-

LESBIAN: What's the big idea?

MS. JACKSON: Listen.

LESBIAN: Your mother and I can do whatever the hell we please.

FLETCHER: Whenever the kids aren't looking.

MS. JACKSON: Fletch!

LESBIAN: Your mother is a grown woman.

FLETCHER: Why doesn't she act like it?

MS. JACKSON: That's enough.

– ACT I, lines 973-982

– ACT II, lines 411-419

GREY GOOSE: Open your eyes. Do you know what I was trying to do here? Look at this place. It's a god-damn mess.

FLETCHER: You were only trying to help.

GREY GOOSE: I wasn't. I was trying to please Kokomo. That dishwasher wasn't a gift for your mother. It was a gift for her.

FLETCHER: Don't expect me to believe Mother's story that all this time you've been chasing after the cook.

GREY GOOSE: Things changed the moment your mother convinced herself that she's falling in love with that Kiwi.

FLETCHER: Lesbian is not going to stay here. I doubt Mother would just pack up and leave. All we have to do is be patient. We have to ride this thing out without losing our heads and without letting anybody catch the two of them going at it - whatever the hell it is they do together, which can't be much. They probably just kiss and talk about running off to get married in Spain. Regardless, we can't afford to take any chances - not with our reputation as low as it is.

GREY GOOSE: I argued with her today - not because it was necessary - because I desired it. I shouted what I should never murmur without her permission.

FLETCHER: What are you talking about?

GREY GOOSE: I called her a whore - not because I was roping Luke -because she turned me on. It made me angry to feel so helpless. I argued with Kokomo so that I could be close to her: so that I could breathe in her scent. That's all this stupid dishwasher business was about. Did I say it was a gift? It wasn't a gift. It was a ploy.

FLETCHER: Stay away from her.

Usage of Away in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I had to kill her.

So people think I got away with murder. The great hero kills his own. Gets away with it.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on principles of honor coming straight out of Roman mythology

China is full of noise these days. People everywhere. Doing everything. Anything they can to make it. I know there's a cost to the churning. Families split apart. Like the Limas. Ten kids all over the world. San Jose. New York. Vancouver. London. Paris. Tokyo. All born in Hong Kong. If the rich can't keep it together what hope is there for the poor. I've seen the peasant families on TV. Parents who see their children once a year. Until the kids run away from their grandparents and find work in a bar somewhere.

– from “Beautiful Branca,” a true story that has been slightly embellished as far as I can recall

I am surprised by death. When the bullet entered from behind and the wind began to rush away from me I packed my bags as fast as I could. Every moment I could salvage was stuffed into the nearest carry-on I could find. I thought for sure I would ride that wind away from me. Yet I remained. Locked in a melting prison. The worms now all around.

– from “Shovels Fall,” an interesting story about the cycle of violence throughout history

I gave him the coldest stare I could muster. "Old Austrian custom," I whispered. I walked away. I washed my face and hands in the bathroom. I noticed the lay of my breasts. I wondered if Indiana would see. What would she think? I considered telling her what happened. It wouldn't be appropriate. I would have to fish my clothes out from behind the love seat.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may calm one's nerves depending on your outlook

My father never lied to my mother about going up to see his old girlfriend. He lied to me. So I wouldn't say anything. So my mother could find out about it later. From the receipts. It was part of the grand scheme. To bring things to a head. To back up the toilet of their lives. To bring up the festering crap they had tucked away in their basement all these years. Like the accusation that my father had raped my mother. On some night twelve years ago. When she had said no. And he had done it anyway. I wanted to laugh but my wife was there. Her father raped her mother. Allegedly. My wife is convinced its true. Despite only having heard one side of it. If it were as bad as it sounds I doubt her parents would still be together. But they are. Like my parents. They've reconciled. For all intents and purposes they're a happily married couple. They hold hands in the street. While my wife wont sleep with me. Because on some rainy afternoon two years ago I told her I wanted to rape her.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
