Behind, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is studying the viability of amplifying his immense Fiction Corpus with some real gay fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the practicality of using English as humanity's second language. I do doubt the spiritless game plan by which English is taught.Pointer

Strengthening one's adeptness with a language isn't like producing a more valuable coin. A language - a common language - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A spoken language can not be segmented from the competing values of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A good teacher must develop a plan for introducing it; the prudent pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of writing of varying size and consistency. They may contain anything from a book about literature to an entire set of really gay fiction stories. I lost many a night laboring on my "gargantuan" Fiction Corpus to form a specific sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have shaped a million words and I have evaluated them, reformulating them - not merely to teach an American language but to reveal the human soul, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Europe, the summer of 2011. Twelve countries. 46 days. One car. One tent. One man. One woman he's just met.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Behind

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word behind in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word behind, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word behind is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Your father snuck up behind her and said, "Is this it?" He was holding up a nylon bag.

Verse 297 from the chapter called Security

At ten o'clock, I removed both guns from the fake loudspeaker. Considering that Goofy's gun was unloaded, I tucked that one into the front of my pants; the silenced service pistol went behind. Both guns restricted my ability to dance, but, now that they were ready, I was calm. I wondered if, under pressure, I might accidentally pull the wrong gun. After all, it was easier to pull up one's shirt in front, rather than in back. I tried practicing the move, but then I realized it looked very suspicious. I went to the bar and drank.

Verse 1168 from the chapter called Security

"Whose fault is that?" I asked. It was true: my mother had neglected me. Without my grandmother, she had never gone to church. Now that she was here, my mother was taking me every single week. I was suffering the greatest humiliation I had ever had to suffer: every time Communion came along, I was left out. That girl sitting behind me was just as old, if not younger, and she got to go. She got to take Holy Communion; I was left out. She got to see me sitting there humiliated, left alone. My own mother was humiliating me in front of a beautiful girl! This is how I first came to Christ: humiliated.

Verse 133 from the chapter called Childhood

"It was good," said Sapper. "The priest came to the house, which he never does anymore - but he loved your mother, so he came. They dropped your mother over the doorsill three times; she said good-bye to her family home. Then we processed. Not all of us did: most people drove, but your grandmother insisted on processing from the house to the church, and then from the church to the cemetery, which the priest didn't want to do - but, that's how your mother wanted it, she said. The problem was: to get to the church, you have to take the highway, which somebody said you would have to get a permit for. But your grandmother said, 'Forget about it: I'm not getting any permit. Who needs a permit to walk my daughter's coffin to her grave?' So the priest said, 'Fine: do what you want.' When we left the house, he didn't walk: he hopped into his car. Those of us who did walk wailed; we sang death songs. Nothing would've been more beautiful except for the traffic. Those tractor-trailers were piling up behind us, not to mention all the other impatient people. Whenever anyone successfully passed us, you couldn't hear the next verse. Those tractor-trailers: whenever they shifted by, they drowned us out completely. Fumes were everywhere, blowing in our faces. We had trouble singing; it was difficult to breath."

Verse 276 from the chapter called Adolescence

So Jesus gave him his gun. He gave him his gun. He immediately regretted it. The doorman let him in. He was patted down. The doorman closed the door behind him. There was darkness. Lighting a lamp, he said, "Go downstairs and turn right." So Jesus took the lamp and went downstairs. At the bottom, he turned right. There was a large room. People were in it. Most of them were bound and gagged. The only two people who weren't bound and gagged were holding guns. One of them said, "What's going on?"

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

So he raped her, using a wimple to choke her, a veil to gag her, and a scapular and cloak to bind her arms behind her.

When she was done, he left her there lying on the Bagatelle, quiet and unresponsive.

He drove home with his companions, and then I woke up.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraphs 26-28

By the time Nike walked up to the car - after patiently waiting behind us - we were almost ready to go. But rolling up the window, I turned to Indiana and confessed: "I can't drive anymore either: I'm useless." She laughed; it was so nice to see her laugh, I started laughing too: we were both giggling hysterically like schoolgirls. Indiana said we would have to sleep right there by the side of the road. I said Nike would have to push us. "But look," I said, "my hands are all black. I'm going to get your steering wheel dirty." There's no need to worry, she said; steering wheels are unimportant, and besides, this one was black already. So we laughed, driving the rest of the way intoxicated. By the end, both our faces had lost their alien colors.

Mary for evening Mass. And so, with a 'Hey, ho!' and 'How resourceful!' off we went skipping across the square. My energy did not last however, and began to fail me sometime around the profession of faith, which I have enough trouble stumbling through without the lightness of head, or the German language for that matter. As you can imagine, when I wasn't sitting I was swaying, and by the prayers of the faithful my mind, still being rather airy, was having trouble reconciling the heaviness of my skull; my neck too had trouble coping, so that for every prayer I was, quite appropriately, hanging my head, but had to muster all my strength for the action of lifting it, which would send it catapulting back, not straight above my shoulders but quite behind them, at which point I would begin mouthing what I believed was the proper response, which, having gratefully ended, would promptly send my head bouncing back to its original position of blissful rest.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 4, Meeting a Man in Austria, Paragraph 1, Clauses 3-7

INDIE: Yes, it's not working. Albert was supposed to fix it.

JO: Are you sure it's plugged in? Maybe Olympia pulled it out.

INDIE: No: the plug is behind everything.

JO: Maybe the socket's dead. But everything else is working, right?

INDIE: Yes, everything else is working.

JO: Well. I guess I'll just use the CD player.

INDIE: Oh, did you bring any CDs?

JO: No. I didn't.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 32, Femme Fatale, Paragraphs 22-29

So I ran: across the puddles of the road, along the sidewalk where the herringbone, undulating its miniature landscape of brick, now formed a miniature world of lakes and hills where my foot found its familiar patterns. I, leaping with irregular steps, passed those buildings which not so long ago were fresh in my experience, shuffling past the unconcerned remains of undergraduates - some wet behind the ears, some colleagues from not so long ago - but all now unfamiliar, threatening too from within their institutional shelter, so I had to avoid their faces, and hid my own as much from their imaginary judgment as from the now pelting rain, for I had neglected to bring an umbrella.

"Thanks, boss." The man walked off. Proctor knocked on the door. When John opened it, Proctor busted it wide. He threw John against the wall.
