Below, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is mulling over the feasibility of enhancing his hefty Fiction Corpus with even more free fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the feasibility of upholding English as a global lingua franca. I do challenge the altogether average steps through which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Reinforcing a person's artfulness with a language isn't like launching a more valuable coin. A language - a common tongue - isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A living language cannot be bisected from the shared logic of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to rob her of its cultural context. A worthy teacher must find a way to introduce it; the smartest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written works of various size and consistency. A corpus can include everything from a biography of fiction writers to a few success stories. I burned many candles forging my "handsome" Fiction Corpus in order to form a distinct type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have catalogued them, reformulating them - not merely to teach English vocabulary but to defend the human soul, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

By the end of my first week in Europe in 2011, I had bought a car and out of the blue had met the woman who would join me on a 6,000 mile trek across the European continent, sharing the beat-up car that I had bought and the one small tent from Walmart that I had brought along with me on my flight.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I was American. Freshly arrived in Europe and the new owner of a '97 Ford Escort made in Germany. The only thing I had to complain about was the fact that the owner's manual was in German. She was from Poland, and a German-language owner's manual for a car bought in Poland wasn't the only thing she had to complain about. Something as small as that didn't even register.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Below

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word below in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word below, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word below is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Below in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

The town of Treblinka lay before them like a storybook, the right page already flattened out against the ground, stretching northward all the way to the town of New Court, the left page still hanging in mid-air, supported by the belfries of Town Hall, the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, and St. Hedwig's Basilica, lifted by the hilltop neighborhoods of Bridge Street, and especially by the one on Casimir the Great, which rose directly to the southwest, almost blocking the view, but, nevertheless, below the horizon, its many-colored houses perhaps wishing for greater heights, but, unfortunately, constrained by the fact that each house was indivisibly connected to the other: a block of townhouses on the hilltop, anchoring the landscape and yet reaching high, as if its exclusive inhabitants were uncertain whether it were truly time to turn the page.

Verse 441 from the chapter called Security

She lifted up her shirt and showed me her belly, which featured, among other things (including a large mole), a distinct bulge about three centimeters below her navel.

Verse 734 from the chapter called Bohemia

"The funny thing is: we never got lost. Every time we thought we were lost, we stopped, asked for directions, and it turned out we were on the right road. That happened about twenty times. But worst of all was near the end: they built so many new roads around here, I thought we were really lost. Turned out, just like all the other times, we weren't being patient enough: we kept turning off the road too soon. We hadn't seen the sign yet 'cause we hadn't gotten to it. But how many people we had to wake up to find out! At three in the morning! Two hundred kilometers or whatever it was, we had taken ten hours to cross. Every time we were going at a steady pace, which, for us, meant top speed on level terrain (the only time we were going any faster was coasting downhill), I looked at the speedometer and it said fifty-five kilometers an hour: there was no way that was true. It never fell below thirty even if we were crawling along. Oh, but we blew a tire! That was a god-awful disaster. It took a whole hour to change. My grandfather was so stubborn: he had to do it himself. And then the car rolled off the jack - what a mess! In the pouring rain!

Verse 214 from the chapter called Adolescence

Then, right below it: STATUS QUO: noun. Etymology: Latin: state in which. 1833: first reference. The existing state of affairs .

Verse 23 from the chapter called Adolescence

On top of the iron railing of the fourth balcony, just below the flags, there was a thin brass rod shaped into a sign: it read, 'Manor House.'

"We're not lost," said Jesus sarcastically.

Verses 281-282 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of Below in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Like the angels who must congregate on those high and ghostly triforia - those seemingly impenetrable heights - I too felt myself leaning out from one of those three openings, looking down onto the nave below. It was Nike standing there - and, except for his friend Rothko, the place must have been empty. There was no one else around. I saw no one. And yet, the two of them were conversing in hushed tones. They must have been cowed by the grandeur. I came down softly and slowly, floatingly, until, finally, I could hear their voices.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 4, The Importance of Having a Dream House, Paragraph 3

I left the bedroom, and, going down the hall, I stopped at the top of the stairs. I saw the front door down below me, and, going quickly, but quietly, downstairs, I left the house. I didn't go back. I said to myself: O Indiana! Why have you possessed me? Why have seduced me into this maddening dream? I want to love you, but I want to love you quietly and peacefully and safely: for you are a good wife; you are a good mother and I can't resist you. And yet, while your husband walks and talks, you tempt me - and you do so quietly and safely, but leaving me no peace! That's all I want: I want peace. I want to love you. But I want peace.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 15, Running Away, Paragraph 5

One was an actress; the other, an actor. Perched atop their corner, their vigilance having lapsed into conversation, neither of them saw me coming; I had to look up and shout from directly below them: "how is London treating you, Macy?" which surprised him and excited him so much he would've walked right off the pedestal if Christie hadn't held him back at the last moment. With a little trouble, he came down from his pedestal and we greeted each other as friends, not having time for much else, because Christie was in a hurry to get us down the street.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 2

One of its branches joined the main river above Whitehall, and a lower branch below the Houses of Parliament, thus creating the island of Westminster. Now back in the day, the Tyburn supplied London with drinking water, which was transported to the city by means of a most romantically natural system: a series of conduits made of elm trees. Now apparently, the English elm, if not as stately as our native American, is at least as durable under water - however, I did notice a very small but definite split in the bottom of our sculling boat; you shall have to investigate upon your return. But while you are in London, consider the fate of the Tyburn: it has disappeared; but: it still exists.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 10, Using Metaphor, Paragraph 1, Clauses 4-8

Please: show mercy upon me, sister: for, when you met me, I would never have imagined myself in such garb, and I would not have held any treasure so high above me that I could have borne it. I would have balked, dear sister, like the most wretched of mules; like a brutish, flea-bitten thing, I have not understood myself, sister. I have been compelled. I have followed your beautiful echoing right into the most unsightly of places. I have hated myself. And now that I have found you here, sister, I am deathly afraid I shall never leave, even if the ground below me break, and a swarm of bees try to lift me away. So I beg you, sister, no matter what the greatness of your love be, and who the object of its glory, to bless my suffering with pity and charity, and to marry yourself to me, this once hopeless creature." Nike stopped, and he waited.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

He wished he knew what time the sun rose. Above and to his left were the windows of the barbershop, which didn't open until ten o'clock. To the right was the aromatherapy salon, which opened at eleven. Somewhere below him were the windows of the Sky Pool, part of the fitness club. In the morning, it was open from seven to ten. It was too far to reach.

One day, while waiting for Kumiko by the tea ceremony room on the sixty-fifth floor, Patsy looked out the window at the spokes of the Ferris Wheel on the quay. He caught sight of his man. He wasn't on the Ferris Wheel. He wasn't on the quay. He wasn't walking sixty-five floors below.

His face was being reflected in the window. That was the last thing Patsy remembered before waking up. It was freezing cold. It was dark. It was windy. There was something around his neck.

Tae poked his head over the edge of a rock. A few meters below, Kung lay naked, neck-deep in a pool of steaming water. Bei swam next to him. Fu sat on the edge, soaking her feet.

John nodded. "Unless he got another one." Proctor was already out the door. He called the policeman up. He passed him on the stairs. When he heard the door to the hallway shut he went back up a flight. To the floor below John's apartment. He found the right door. He kicked it open. Inside stood the shadow of a bed. A desk. John went to the window. He opened the curtains. He started rummaging through the drawers. He didn't have to look for long. "Dear beloved," said a letter. It listed the names of the victims. Starting with Emily.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a victim put in a weird position

"I don't know," said John.

"How do you not know?"

"I don't remember." John screamed a little too loud. Proctor eased up.

"Not by itself," said Orbitz. "It has the maturity of a small child. It will always be like that. The princess was infected with a parasite during the pregnancy. It fused with her child's nervous system. From the belly up it looks like a little girl. Below it has the thorax, the legs, and the abdomen of a large spider. In the abdomen is a poison gland that can be removed surgically. Until then it must be cauterized daily. Its reproductive system cannot be removed. It produces parasites that infect pregnant humanoids. When it sees you onboard it will insist that you be infected." Sara Lee's chest heaved with apprehsion. Orbitz restrained her. "It will sense the child within you," he said. "If you go aboard the ship I am going to let it infect you, Sara Lee." Orbitz's voice almost broke. "I'm sorry for that," he said. "I've paid the price. I want you to know that our son will survive. He will be a beautiful baby boy. He will grow up to love his mother very much. I can't tell you how this is how going to happen. It would betray me to the creature. You have to trust me." Orbitz turned Sara Lee around to face him. "You don't have to go onboard the ship, beloved. You have a choice."

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
