Beside, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is weighing the notion of boosting his petty Fiction Corpus with some akbar birbal stories translated into modern English; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the soundness of exploiting English as a worldwide lingua franca. I don't think highly of the certifiably commonplace steps through which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Perfecting a person's mastery of a language isn't like pioneering a more accurate crossbow. A language isn't merely a tool that you can learn to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A shared tongue cannot be insulated from the philosophical currents of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make pupils recite English is to strip them of its cultural context. A worthy instructor has to find a method of introducing it; the prudent student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of written works of varying size and consistency. Such a corpus may include anything from a book about literature to some real science fiction romance. I burnt many candles laboring on my "tremendous" Fiction Corpus to form a specific type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have indexed them, reshaping them - not simply to teach American vocabulary but to defend the human soul, and to propel that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I was American. Freshly arrived in Europe and the new owner of a '97 Ford Escort made in Germany. The only thing I had to complain about was the fact that the owner's manual was in German. She was from Poland, and a German-language owner's manual for a car bought in Poland wasn't the only thing she had to complain about. Something as small as that didn't even register.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Beside

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word beside in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word beside, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word beside is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Beside in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

When Zoe left the safe house that night, Jesus decided not to have her followed. That was a mistake. For one whole week, Jesus was left in the dark. Zoe didn't call, nor were his calls answered. Your father was beside himself with worry.

Verse 913 from the chapter called Security

When the press began to say that Jesus's Confederation was based on Cathedral Island, Jesus did nothing to dispute it. The error was built on already existing confusion; Jesus didn't need to add to it. Besides, anyone who cared knew that Jesus had blocked off Sand Island, not the territory around the Cathedral. Nevertheless, the error stood. Your father liked to indulge it. Using a sawed-off bed-knob as a mace, Jesus wielded it the way field commanders of the Old Republic had once deployed their troops: by swinging it forward, left and right, always with a firm flick of the wrist, like the parish priest or bishop who blesses his congregation with holy water. Jesus used it whenever his officers met with him to discuss further operations. Inside the sacristy of the Blessed Virgin Mary's church, they would come to look at their biggest map, which had all of their troop positions marked. They kept it locked in a cupboard with other sensitive information, and, when they met, Jesus used his mace to point things out; he would bang the table with it. Jesus's men soon began to call him 'Bishop.' Your father had chosen the mace for its ancient distinction (Jesus felt like the primeval warrior), but the truth was (as Jesus seemed to remember it from his father's books) that the mace had indeed been carried into battle by medieval bishops, who had been barred from the use of swords for some ecclesiastical reason. Anyway, the name was apt. Jesus became the Bishop of Cathedral Island, leader of Confederate troops fighting for truth. Your father embraced his new surname, particularly because it captured his spiritual leadership, which he consciously, though somewhat erratically, pursued. The word was ancient. Most importantly of all, it punctuated his separate identity, the superiority of his office, the remoteness of his character, and, most unnervingly of all, Jesus's growing detachment.

Verse 474 from the chapter called Arms

What was he going to do? Go to that girl's father and tell him - what? That Sapper had done it? Why would he believe him? He was only passing through, as usual. Besides, he was no tattletale. He was fucked - simply fucked. There was no way around it. If he had been accused, he could've denied it. But he wasn't being accused: he was being ostracized. He was the girl's most convenient scapegoat. If he went to her father now and said he hadn't done it, then what? The girl would deny it - maybe not for long, but then what? Sapper takes the blame? For what? For being the stupidest? We were all responsible for what he did.

Verse 230 from the chapter called Childhood

Your father knew what had happened. The girl had blamed him, the temporary guest, instead of the real culprit, who, besides being some sort of 'interest,' was also the girl's permanent neighbor. It wasn't hard for Jesus to prove these suspicions. One day, not too long after these developments, Jesus called the girl over and asked her if she wanted to play. She said, "Sorry, but" - it took her a brief moment of hesitation - "I can't play with you anymore." She left. Your father was quite upset.

Verse 229 from the chapter called Childhood

"I don't want to anymore. I'll just get dirty. Besides, I just remembered: there's no place to bathe around here, is there?"

"No, there isn't. You better get used to that."

Verses 420-421 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Beside in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

We were standing in a nice corner. The walls around us were high and windowless. Concrete was crumbling and cracking itself. There was a lot of rusted metal. The ground was littered. "You know what I like about big cities? I like these kinds of places: the buttholes and the bellybuttons." There was even some neglected shrubbery around us. It was bordering the crumbling concrete steps upon which Luka was seated. I placed my foot beside his on the lowest one. I started balancing my leg. I thought of the stairs outside our old apartment. I thought of the opium dealer - as a character from a New Comedy, with Luka, the poor yeoman; Anicetus, the corrupted son of an equis; and me, Andreas: the lowly manservant, the torch-bearing slave.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 14, Referencing the Past, Paragraph 16

But he was always telling his stories to other people. Some of them I would hear several times, depending on the company we shared, but never, not once, was I personally privileged with a story. His opinions I would hear, sometimes even his principles; he always shared his feelings, which is something I rarely did and only with great difficulty; on the other hand, he rarely gossiped, but he offered countless anecdotes, often involving other people; none of these, however, were stories, which included all these elements and more besides.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 5, Falling in Love, Paragraph 4, Clauses 4-7

It was the most wretched Nike I could ever hope to have seen - and I was so surprised when I saw him there in my dreams. I could say I pitied him, but that is beside the point.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 10, Navigating the Socio-Political Spectrum, Paragraph 8

By the time Nike walked up to the car - after patiently waiting behind us - we were almost ready to go. But rolling up the window, I turned to Indiana and confessed: "I can't drive anymore either: I'm useless." She laughed; it was so nice to see her laugh, I started laughing too: we were both giggling hysterically like schoolgirls. Indiana said we would have to sleep right there by the side of the road. I said Nike would have to push us. "But look," I said, "my hands are all black. I'm going to get your steering wheel dirty." There's no need to worry, she said; steering wheels are unimportant, and besides, this one was black already. So we laughed, driving the rest of the way intoxicated. By the end, both our faces had lost their alien colors.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 30, Presenting Oneself to a Potential Husband, Paragraph 21

I was more than happy to sit back and watch, gathering what I could from observation. Besides, I was preoccupied: Albert's relationship with his wife was one thing; I was more concerned about his wife's relationship with me. That was something I was not prepared to talk about with anyone - excepting you, of course - and, as I made clear to you, the almost simultaneous development in those two relationships was quite disturbing to say the least. The whole thing was totally suspicious, and, of course, I could only imagine that everything was somehow interconnected.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring a frank discussion of the system

Much fiction surrounds the names Gog and Magog. According to my understanding, they were not giants or blood-thirsty monsters. They were not fallen angels. They were one man and one woman. They apparently loved each other, though they often quarreled. Whether or not they made up half their adventures is beside the point. They were definitely the first people to circumnavigate the world. The evidence for that, though circumstantial, is overwhelming.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a barbarian

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LUKE: Why not? You've lived in peace for so long.

FLETCHER: If by peace you mean we've committed just about every crime except murder.

ALICE: Is that true?

MS. JACKSON: My son likes to exaggerate.

FLETCHER: Consider it. In a community of such close quarters with nowhere to go, the only thing you can't ignore is a dead body. Besides that, anything goes.

MS. JACKSON: Feel free to ignore my son's imagination.

ALICE: 'I to not fear your poat.' Is that right?

FLETCHER: The Tahitians were unfamiliar with certain consonants, including the letter, 'b.' I don't presume to know how Susannah really talked; this is my best guess.

ALICE: 'Tapu' is taboo?

FLETCHER: Tapu is the original pronunciation. 'Susannah, every time I invite you to my boat, you run away as if you were frightened. Tell me: is my boat tapu?'

ALICE: 'No.'

FLETCHER: 'Why do you run?'

ALICE: 'I to not run.'

FLETCHER: 'You certainly don't look happy. For God's sake, it's only a canoe - just like your people use.'

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
