Besides, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's weighing the feasibility of expanding his imposing Fiction Corpus with some real non fiction articles; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the concept of administering English as a common language for the world. I don't think highly of the pleasureless technique by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Strengthening a person's knowledge of a language isn't like bringing about a sharper needle. A language is not just a tool that you can learn to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A living language cannot be disentangled from the professed knowledge of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A proper educator must develop a technique for introducing it; the prudent pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written language of varying size and consistency. They could contain everything from a book about literature to some real mystery stories. I watched many nights pass creating my "outsized" Fiction Corpus to form a new sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have constructed a million words and I have catalogued them, reshaping them - not simply to teach the English language but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to provoke that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Besides

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word besides in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word besides, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word besides is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Besides in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"You're kidding, right?"

"Of course I am. Besides, I've seen you naked."

Verses 710-711 from the chapter called Bohemia

Money laundering didn't matter that much to me. Perhaps the others thought that we were out there looking for proof that the Krupniks were criminals - incriminating evidence to give the procuracy - but they were wrong. I was after Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's head, not his freedom. Besides, it would've been rather hypocritical of us to betray the Krupniks for crimes like that; we were guilty of laundering money too. We were working with stolen cash - somebody's life savings perhaps - who knows? The truth of the matter was: we needed more. Stalin was right. We were spending too much money too quickly. We required employment, and, unlike everybody else, we had no trouble finding it. Security was in high demand. Unfortunately, only the rich could afford us. Instead of working for people like the Krupniks, I told Stalin to work for something slightly less despicable, like the State, for example, or - even better - the Church.

Verse 233 from the chapter called Security

There was still a small crowd of people near the entrance to the club. Jesus had no idea who those people were, but, nevertheless, trying to approach his prey at that point would've been suicide; Jesus had no way of knowing how many random people knew him as that guy whose father sells books - "you know, his father's that crazy guy who talks to himself," they would've told the police. Besides, the Krupnik would've seen his face, and, having seen his face, Jesus would've been compelled by all sense of self-preservation to kill the man. That was not an option: Jesus was not prepared to kill anyone; he was not a murderer; he was a poor man. Jesus waited. The future brother-in-law showed up. "Shit," Jesus said. The two of them were leaving together; that made things very difficult.

Verse 611 from the chapter called Adolescence

Dulles shrugged. "The terrorist war," he said. "Besides, the army's not going to pay for it to be fixed. The Protocol's going into effect."

"That's right," I said. "I heard about that."

Verses 179-180 from the chapter called Bohemia

Jesus stared him down. "Yes, cousin, we do. The Knighthood is indispensable. With the Knighthood comes the power of the Church. Besides, with a brigade, we can't govern territory. The Knighthood makes that possible." My cousin was readily convinced.

ANDY: Yeah, I suppose - but it's not essential. I think I know enough general information. Besides, Mars will only be superficially similar to Iraq. I mean: they both have a lot of desert, right? And I'll be exploring other issues that have nothing to do with Iraq specifically: like technology and democracy, et cetera.

CHR: Don't forget the characters.

MACY: That's very unfair.

ANDY: Don't kid yourself.

MACY: You don't have to ruin a perfectly good evening.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 1, Love, Hope, Desire and Suspicion, Paragraphs 35-38

We shall have to keep discussing this later. I do not think I can write any more: I am almost unconscious. Besides, I think I've written enough. It's been a week since I began my daily journal - that is plenty.

Tomorrow morning, I'll send you my work. I hope you'll enjoy it. But, of course, by the time you read this, it will no longer be tomorrow morning. So I rephrase: I hope you have enjoyed my work.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraphs 23-24

ANDY: I have no idea. But, for some reason, it tries to bring you together, and it tries to tear you apart.

OLYMP: I don't think gravity is very nice. Besides, I wish I could fly.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 2, Discussing Heaven with a Child, Paragraphs 32-33

NIKE: Besides, even a castrated man can have an erection. So no matter what happens, you still have to worry about me, Monsieur Christian. I'm a fucking rapist with a vengeance now.

CHR: Where did they take you?

NIKE: Does it look like I fucking know? They blindfolded me. I was in a garage. On my way out - what can I tell you? It looked residential.

CHR: Residential?
