Between, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's thinking over the notion of enhancing his paltry Fiction Corpus with a treatise on the meaning of the word fictional; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the potency of upholding English as a worldwide language. I do reject the unexceptional design by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Fine-tuning one's skill with a language isn't like making a safer gunpowder. A language - a living language - isn't merely an instrument that you can learn to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A common language can not be unlinked from the prevailing culture of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A proper educator must develop a strategy for introducing it; the prudent pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words based on a specific corpus, a body of written works of varying scope and consistency. This corpus could contain everything from a book about literature to some real hard boiled fiction. I suffered many a sleepless night creating my "hefty" Fiction Corpus in order to form a unique class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have strung together a million words and I have classified them, reframing them - not just to teach a tongue but to reveal the human soul, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

My plane touched down in Poland on June 20th. A month later I was in Austria. Two days later, Slovenia. The next day, Croatia. A week later, Italy. The next day, Switzerland. The next day, France. The next day, Germany. The next day, Belgium. The next day, Holland. All with a woman I had met my first weekend on the Continent.

I had come to Europe to experience European naturism, a movement whose philosophy matched my aesthetic of body acceptance and whose organizational structure and leadership I had thought almost exclusively restricted to the western half of the continent. I was shocked to learn that naturism had an official home in Poland, a country not especially known for its liberal culture. I was less shocked to discover that the home was owned by a Dutchman, but even more shocked to learn that it had been largely built by Margo.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Between

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word between in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word between, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word between is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Between in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"He's right here, Zoe. He's right here between us - inside and out - all the time. He loves you, Zoe. You don't even understand how much He loves you. He loves all of us, but we have to do His work. We have to help Him."

Verse 147 from the chapter called Vows

Several confraternities were established expressly for the purpose of flagellation. Before long, they were competing for members. The Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, having always lain in the shadow of St. Hedwig's, started something called 'Skorupa,' which means 'shell.' The idea was that our bodies are just shells, which are meant to be broken. The name, in avoiding unwieldy constructions involving the word 'confraternity,' was supposed to appeal, in its graphic terseness, to a younger generation, whose members, according to the pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul, were not moved by the more subtle connections between the wine of the Blessed Sacrament and the blood of a righteously scourged flagellant. "You have to make it sound appealing," said the pastor. "That's what the young people need. They need to hear you speaking in their own language. Listen to the word: Skorupa. There's something magical about it. It sounds mysterious, passionate. It captures everything that flagellation means. The word has bite. It's got feeling: a sharp and sudden sting!"

Verse 431 from the chapter called Adolescence

Jesus didn't sleep much that night. The next day, during Mass in a cemetery, Jesus slept between graves and dreamed.

Verse 774 from the chapter called Security

I pulled a ball of stocking from between my ass cheeks. "How much?" I asked.

Verse 178 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Her face was blue," said Sapper, after a moment, "or violet - something in between. She was bloated. Her stomach was swollen; so was her face. You wouldn't have recognized her if you had passed her in the street."

"Her coffin was opened?"

Verses 237-238 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of Between in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

We were both diagonal to the shelf, and the left half of my body was directly behind the right half of yours. Suddenly, I became especially aware of our proximity. The feeling burst out of nowhere - it was muted, but still very powerful. I noted the connection between our proximity and the onset of the feeling. And then you moved. You shifted slightly closer to me, to the right, and then you shifted back. And the feeling reacted. It was responding to the movements of your organism.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 4, Clauses 6-14

But my jealousy and our intimate relations were able to coexist for a long time, and one did not overpower the other until, of course, a woman came between us. Ms. Christie was a charming woman, in large part because, unlike Macy, she was completely artless - by which I mean: it was much harder for me to notice when and how she was consciously pursuing self-promotion.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 6, Third Party Intervention, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

Throughout these episodes I made a valiant effort to explain to Macy how I had dreamt of kissing his beautiful mouth, how much I had wanted to love him, and why I felt I had these feelings. I began to list his virtues, and he started listing mine; after all this I finally calmed down. Then I had to get up and pace back and forth across the room for a while, until finally, settling down in a wooden chair, I put myself in rather close proximity to my old friend. This was a mistake. Perhaps my old friend had taken some undue inference from my behavior, perhaps not; at any rate, the distance between us now considerably shortened, my old friend suddenly took advantage of my preoccupation, and somehow, without my being completely conscious of it, he positioned himself in my lap, and wrapping his arms around me, embraced my fatigue and caressed my hair, and then, ever so slyly, began to kiss me.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 7, Trying to Kiss, Paragraph 10

The girl at the desk raised an eyebrow and pulled her ears back: the unmistakable gesture of recognition - in this case, mingling with curiosity and judgment. She went back to her schoolwork; but after I had passed her, and a few meters were between us, I impulsively spun around. Indeed, I caught her: she was checking me out. And she couldn't stop her head from jerking back. Poor girl: she was already turning red by the time I turned around.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 1, Visiting Old Colleagues, Paragraph 4, Clauses 7-12

Somebody had written something in the margins - something in Hungarian. The writing was addressed to Albert but that was all I could understand. I had better luck reading the article: "Hungarian women are killing their men. What else could possibly explain the fact that Hungarian men die so young? No other country has such a disparity between the life expectancies of its men and women." I looked at the naked girl on the facing page. She was smiling devilishly, and for some reason she was sewing.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 7, Revealing Literature, Paragraph 2, Clauses 5-11

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Junior admired golf. It took an amount of discipline he lacked in regard to women. He noticed similarities between the sports. In each case, though it was possible to play with teams, the goal remained essentially one of individual accomplishment. A man had to use his club to get the ball, or the contents of his ball, into the hole.

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring a bunch of horses

"Do you desire me?" asked Carmina.

Ferrari removed the flaut from between his lips. Eying his cunningly artless pupil, he said, "Whatever do you mean, Your Ladyship?"

"Do you want to make love to me?" she asked.

She realized her glove was too thick. She was pressing more than one button. She tried to push the red one with her tongue. It was too difficult. She tried using her teeth. She couldn't reach. She pushed her arm back into the sleeve. It got stuck. She put the PDA in her mouth. She tried to squeeze her hand between her neck and the collar. It was impossible. She put her free hand between her legs. She tried to twist off the glove. It wouldn't move. "Hee-hee."

"No," cried Harry Connick. "You're not pulling anybody out of this race. If the horse falls, we'll fall together. I don't care if you have to peel me off the track. I've been spineless my entire life. I'm not backing down now. Don't you understand? I've been afraid of everything-even my beloved wife. That's why I'm here. God knows every time she sat next to me, I cringed. I squeezed my legs so tight, I cracked my own nuts. Not anymore. I'm not going to let them keep dividing us between black and white, the thin and the morbidly obese, the rich and the middle-class. It's over. I've seen the promised land. It's a horseshoe-shaped circle paved with bricks. There's a sign hangin' above it. The sign says, 'Winner.' Now I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm walking into that circle if I have to crawl over a dead horse and die. Who's with me?" Everybody cheered.

"Forgive me," sputtered the boy. "I had to test your patience and your strength. I am sent from the court of Sargon by his son. He wishes to arrange a meeting between Skin Smoother and his father. He proposes five hundred men on each side in a fair fight. You would catch the king being carried in his chariot through the dense forests in the hills to the south. Usage of Between in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LUKE: What's the difference between the two?

MS. JACKSON: Bounty families are descendant from the original Bounty mutineers, who settled on Pitcairn Island-

FLETCHER: With their Tahitian consorts. I'm sorry. I meant their Tahitian wives. And their Tahitian slaves. I mean, their male Tahitian friends.

MS. JACKSON: The Pitcairner families are descendant-

FLETCHER: From three adventurers - to be more precise, from two ack-willy whalers and a soldier-of-fortune.

LUKE: That's a ridgy-didge pedigree. Too right!

FLETCHER: It gets better. Being a direct descendant of my namesake, Fletcher Christian, the illustrious chief of the mutiny on the Bounty, I am therefore descendant from the ancient rulers of the Isle of Man.

LUKE: A reg'lar Pommy!

FLETCHER: My father's mother was a Quintal. That means half of him is descendant from a drunken scoundrel who set his ship on fire, drove his wife to suicide, and threatened to kill the entire island population. That's not the side of the story we like to tell. We prefer the story of how John Jackson turned to Christianity and taught his children to read and write. Jackson, I'll have you know, was a Christian before he became a Jackson. He changed his name the moment the British rediscovered the island. My mother admires his cowardice so much, she did the same thing.

– ACT I, lines 93-101

ALICE: Where is she?

KOKOMO: In what seems like paradise: Western Samoa.

ALICE: I thought you liked it here.

KOKOMO: I do. I can't help being homesick. Norfolk is small. Between the locals and the tourists, I think I've had enough.

ALICE: I understand.

KOKOMO: There aren't so many tourists back home. The islands are big. Half the land is forest.

ALICE: It sounds nice.

KOKOMO: It's a mixed blessing. Few tourists means fewer crowds but also less money.

ALICE: Do a lot of Samoans emigrate?

KOKOMO: They do. It's different for me. I'm half European. My father's from Vladivostok.

– ACT I, lines 830-839

KOKOMO: It is. I keep telling you that.

FLETCHER: Maybe for Catholics: you have thousands of years of ritual to fall back on: Popes and bishops to decide for you.

KOKOMO: That's not fair.

FLETCHER: I'm supposed to be my own priest.

KOKOMO: Maybe you should start praying.

FLETCHER: For what? For the will to become Catholic?

KOKOMO: You know what I am. You've taken the time to study what my faith requires. I'm overjoyed by that. I realize it angers you sometimes. You need to remember it isn't about priests or prayer or sacraments or the Bible or saints or miracles or doctrine or creed. It's not even about salvation. It's about sacrifice. If you, Fletcher Christian, are not willing to place yourself into the hands of God - to submit yourself to His Divine Mercy - then nothing else matters and there will never be any happiness between us.

FLETCHER: I see that.

KOKOMO: You don't see it.

FLETCHER: How can you tell?

– ACT I, lines 1342-1351

(KOKOMO exits with the tea. FLETCHER enters.)

FLETCHER: What's going on?

MS. JACKSON: Isn't it obvious?

GREY GOOSE: One of the pipes came loose.

FLETCHER: Why did you tell me to turn it on?

MS. JACKSON: He didn't. He insinuated something about my preferences. Let's make something perfectly clear. What happens in this house is between me and my guests. Now clean up this mess and leave. Come on, Homo. We'll put your things in the laundry.

LESBIAN: That's not necessary.

MS. JACKSON: Come on.

– ACT I, lines 1196-1202

FLETCHER: Bigger than your husband.

LESBIAN: Or so I'm told. I didn't actually see them. What I saw was smaller: about six or seven feet. They had these big beaks and enormous eyes made from concentric circles: each circle colored differently from the next. They looked like crazed chickens dancing around like that. Of course, with masks so big, the focus turns to a dancer's legs, the swaying of his hips-

MS. JACKSON: And everything in between.

ALICE: Ms. Jackson!

LESBIAN: His arms are busy holding up the mask.

MS. JACKSON: I'm not surprised: making women do the work.

LESBIAN: I wonder if any Polynesians use a big mask. Would your cook know?

MS. JACKSON: Probably not. Where is my cook? Does she know the kitchen still needs cleaning?

FLETCHER: Why are you looking at me?

Usage of Between in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I've never seen a woman as proud as my mother is. As dignified as she tries to be. Lose control of herself in such a disgusting way. She lunged for the computer. She tried to stick her hand between the screen and the keyboard to prevent me from shutting it. As if it were a cannon primed to fire. Aimed at me. And all she had to do was light the fuse.

– from “The Backed-Up Toilet,” a literature story based on real life, namely mine

Orbitz typed. "Show me the log." A list of all actions aboard ship appeared. Orbitz immediately saw the problem. Between his last depature and return the log had recorded three authorized entries. Somebody was on board. Orbitz typed, "Who came onto the ship?"

Marriott took an even longer moment to respond. "You did," she wrote. Something was wrong.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance based on my affection for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

I wondered if she were right. Was it possible for there to be a difference between us? Were our generations so far apart? Were we not experiencing the same systems? Socialism, communism, capitalism, Christianity - were they not as powerful now as they ever were? Perhaps the influence was being overshadowed - by what? Our technologies were trite; our movements, nonexistent. What was my generation doing? Treading water? I took a puff of marijuana. It didn't matter. It was getting late.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's nerves depending on your outlook

Sir Lewis walked down the marbled hall with head held high. A sense of incipient triumph wafted between smells of old paper posters and crusty deli sandwiches and stale cookies munched on by bejacketed professors and parents out for an open house weekend. The poor fools had no idea a champion marched amongst them.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about building attachments in an unforgiving world

The house nearest the bottom of the hill lay between Update and Download streets. It had its official front door on Update Street. The entrance to its driveway was on Download Street. The address said 1 Update Street and was assigned to Rural Route 6 but the man who lived there decided one day that he would prefer to pick up his mail from his car as he got home from work. This was more convenient for him. He put his box for 1 Update Street next to the box for 1 Download Hill. The postman on Rural Route 6 was now expected to end his trip down the hill at the same spot where the postman for Rural Route 2 ended his trip. To make matters better, the man on 1 Update Street had planted a hedgerow on the southern edge of his property twenty years earlier. This was done obviously with the intention of pissing off the mailmen.

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
