By, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is poring over the prospect of amplifying his outsized Fiction Corpus with some real bedtime stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the concept of administering English as a worldwide standard. I do doubt the unspectacular design by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Enhancing a person's finesse for a language isn't like producing a sharper needle. A language - a common tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to wield with greater amounts of precision. A shared language cannot be sundered from the philosophical currents of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A capable educator has to find a method of introducing it; the insightful pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of written language of varying scope and consistency. Such a corpus might include everything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of books to read. I lost many a sleepless night developing my "solid" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have assembled a million words and I have reduced them, reshaping them - not simply to teach the English language but to promote the human soul, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

In June of 2011 I arrived in Europe for what I hoped would be a great adventure; my only concrete plan, to visit Croatia. By September I had driven 6,000 miles and visited 12 different countries, all with a woman I met on the first Friday of my trip.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word By

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word by in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word by, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word by is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

We are always intrigued by the unfamiliar. Someday, perhaps Russians will bring us chicken broth and we will wonder at it. My grandmother used to tell me how Poles went to Germany to sell their lard, and how it sold! as if Germans had never seen a pig before! Lard with onions! On bread! Smeared on bread! Lard smeared on bread was the greatest thing they had ever seen. It makes one laugh, but these things happen.

Verse 71 from the chapter called Childhood

It was not far from the truth: many years and much pain and suffering would go by before I finally figured out what that sign meant. When I was thirteen years old, I had no idea. The first time I saw that bitch, I was looking through your great-uncle's car window, past the garbage bags full of clothes, and I had no idea that she would bring me even more bad tidings. On that fateful day when I returned to Poland, nevertheless, I was scared. I knew it was a bad sign.

Verse 197 from the chapter called Adolescence

Most importantly, we gained a culture of wealth. Music, art and poetry must have a cost. The higher the cost, the better the art. After all, musicians need instruments, sculptors need rock, and poets need to travel. They must be well fed, and thus the Golden Age of each and every nation has been built on gold. Poeta nascitur, et fit. Alexander was made on the slopes of Mount Pangaion. Poland's Golden Age was built on grain, traveling by raft or barge - or even (in the case of a real entrepreneur) by skiff - down the great Vistula River, which took its golden rye by twists and turns and dangerous spring waters into the great city of Danzig. The great age of mercantilism it was! Renaissance of trade and culture! In Poland, safeguarded by the great magnates and latifundia: may they come to reign again! This time, with machines!

Verse 148 from the chapter called Childhood

Protected by the MTA (the Martian Terrestrial Authority, which was created for the purpose), the nuclear bomb was successfully transported. In the meantime, in cooperation with Panzer-Tank Mining, Yariba Corporation dug a deep tunnel into the base of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system. It's twenty-seven kilometers high! Five hundred and forty kilometers wide! I'm sure you've noticed it. They put the nuclear bomb inside the tunnel and off it went, clearing the most enormous cavern ever made. They drilled holes through the top. They drilled holes through the sides. They laid pipes. They brought water and boiled it. The steam went through the steam turbines, rose to the very top and fell back down again, going through the water turbines on the way back down to the boiler - a gigantic operation. A simple operation! A Martian child could appreciate its magnificent beauty, and, not having to wonder whence that blessed power comes, can look outside his northern window and see that brilliant topographical majesty that gives him light. Blessed Olympus! How young those Martians are when they first learn to fear her power! Give them light, Olympus! Not tyranny! Not shadow and pain! Give them light!

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

I expected more, and, waiting for it, I was unaware for a moment that her statement was meant to be taken for what it was - independently, literally, and quite free from explication. Macy's face had become a disturbing shade of red; at least he was smiling. Stuttering my way through an explanation, I had the presence of mind to salvage my dignity and compliment him otherwise, capping my appraisal of his talent by saying, "You should enter the theatre," which had a miraculous effect.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 4, Meeting a Man in Austria, Paragraph 5, Clauses 6-9

Our mother took an interest in her labors; our grandmother tarried. They all started talking about babies. Then Grandmother left to see the tree; Mother said she would take Olympia, which she did; you finally got off the sofa, then Indiana started talking about babies and all the attention they get. I followed our mother into the other room, but then I realized I had left my sweater by the fireplace. Turning around, I went back to the other room, where I found you and Indiana standing close to each other and looking at me. I said to myself: "Why are they looking at me?" But instead of asking, I told you I had forgotten my sweater, and, after picking it up from beside the fireplace, we all joined everyone else in the next room, where we opened presents.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 21, Giving and Receiving a Look, Paragraph 3, Clauses 6-12

These things may persist for many years, and they will spread under the surface - but do not worry: it is only a defect, an imperfection that sometimes disappears by itself. But, if it refuses to budge, it must be removed with a minimum of scarring.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 5, Warts, Paragraph 2, Clauses 5-7

But once these things are grouped together, no criterion but taste is specific enough to distinguish between them; in this way, taste is subject to qualification. Do you see what I'm saying? You see, if one were judging an Olympic race, where time is measured by the millisecond, and we know that only one athlete will get the gold, one would still have to concede that each contestant is among the very best, and therefore equally capable of winning if circumstances permit. Unless of course, the race is run several times and there is always the same clear winner. But then that person belongs in a category of his own, sui generis, which, I suppose, might be construed to mean that he is the best, which also means that I am defeating my own argument.

FLETCHER: How has our island paradise been treating you, Lesbian?

LESBIAN: Not bad, Fletcher. I'm covered with salt.

FLETCHER: You happened to go naawe this morning.

LESBIAN: We went naawe this morning, as you like to call it, in Emily Bay.

ALICE: The water was lovely.

LUKE: The beach was bodgy.

ALICE: I think my husband got stung.

LUKE: In the blot.

MS. JACKSON: Tell me more about Egypt. You were saying something about locusts.

LESBIAN: When I arrived in November the country was under attack. Locusts were everywhere: in the north, in the south, in the east, in the west. Farmers who couldn't afford pesticides were burning tires to survive. It just so happened I arrived in Cairo at the exact moment that the swarm was passing through on its way to the Red Sea.

MS. JACKSON: Where did they come from?

LESBIAN: West Africa. They crossed the Sahara to get there. They were very hungry. They would fall onto your plate and get stuck in your glass. By the time I got to Aswan, the regional governor offered a two hundred Egyptian pound reward for any information leading to the destruction of a swarm.

MS. JACKSON: Did you find one?

LESBIAN: No.

MS. JACKSON: Does that sort of thing happen often? A swarm of locusts sounds so biblical.

LESBIAN: The very next year I took a trip to Hawai'i. They were suffering from a gall wasp invasion.

MS. JACKSON: What's a gall wasp?

ALICE: I understand you had jury duty today.

FLETCHER: I did.

ALICE: How was it?

FLETCHER: Dreadful. I was almost instantly excused by the Australian prosecutor.

LUKE: Sorry, mate.

FLETCHER: The Kiwi defense lawyer didn't even stand a chance. I've never been so insulted.

ALICE: Why didn't he want you?

FLETCHER: He didn't have to state a reason. It's all the more embarrassing since I seem to be the only man on this island who didn't know the victim.

MS. JACKSON: Don't start that again.

– ACT I, lines 73-82

FLETCHER: Oh, Money! God of first fruits! Bringer of knowledge! Harvester of truth! Where would Man be without thy cold kindness? Give me your hand. Let the lorikeets squeak out the rhythm of our steps. We'll dance a polonaise. I'll sashay you around the South Pacific. Who could prove to be a better partner? No man could be as faithful; no woman either. Even if she bleed by the moon, her temper is not as mild. Obedience notwithstanding, her character can seem, at times, positively restive. Feistiness is a woman's most vicious virtue. It can burn a man's pride even while it warms his heart. In truth, a man who marries money is liable to finding a bed so stiff the kingfisher would laugh. Without it, one would cry at night like the ghost bird. Thanks to money, nature is Man's slave. Weathering the vicissitudes of fortune, the wealthy man works the ground for as long as the ground does not work him. LUKE: It's me old school chant - thanks to the junior rugby union.

GREY GOOSE: Your husband's been teaching it to me.

ALICE: That's what you do together. I thought you drank.

Living with Barack wouldn't have made any difference. He wasn't attacked at home like Khalifa. He was attacked by ten men in the middle of the street. In the middle of the day. People standing all around. If I had moved in with him it could've been me in that tunnel to the station. We could both be twitching for the rest of our lives. He told me when he saw me he considers it lucky I was not there.

He wanted to discuss it with me but I refused to talk to him unless he came inside. So he came inside. He said his name was Putin. Which I told him was similar to my own name Bongani. It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
