Inside, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's meditating on the viability of enhancing his massive Fiction Corpus with some real sci fi; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the possibility of administering English as everyone's second language. I don't trust in the unnewsworthy methodology by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Boosting one's dexterity with a language isn't like developing a stronger oar. A language - a common tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A common language can't be disconnected from the prevailing culture of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make pupils recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A proper teacher has to find a way to introduce it; the wisest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of various size and consistency. They could contain everything from a book about literature to a lot of great fiction books. I lost many a sleepless night forging my "remarkable" Fiction Corpus to form a specific sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have devised a million words and I have deconstructed them, reshaping them - not simply to teach an American tongue but to defend the human spirit, and to prod that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

On Monday, I arrived in Europe. By Wednesday I had bought a car. By Friday I had met the woman who a few months later would end up having travelling 6,000 miles across Europe with me.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I had grown up in America. Land of opportunity. I came of age in the booming 90s when everything was possible. She had grown up in Poland. She had come of age at a time when the Soviets were making sure that there wasn't even anything to eat in the country. I couldn't even properly translate the word "opportunity" into Polish.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Inside

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word inside in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word inside, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word inside is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Inside in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

That night, the children told scary stories to each other. At first, we sat around a fire outside, but it soon got cold. We went to your father's room, which shared a narrow closet with the room next to it. Inside that closet, we told more scary stories in the dark. I told the story of the Lonely Planet.

Verse 156 from the chapter called Childhood

Americans were not almighty; they were not invincible. They were not powerless: they were powerful. They were a fortress: a living fortress. Fortress America! The only people who knew what was going on were the people inside the fortress; everybody outside the fortress was waiting to find out: there was no way to spy from the outside. You had to be in the fortress, and so many people were left out.

Verse 84 from the chapter called Childhood

When he climbed inside, Jesus said, "What's with all the work?"

Verse 91 from the chapter called Arms

There they were that night, walking arm in arm. They walked in silence. When they got to his uncle's house, Jesus used his own key: the one his uncle had given him when he was thirteen years old, when his mother had died. Once they were inside, they made love. Jesus put his penis into his aunt's vagina. "Good," she told him. "So good."

Verse 590 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Right. When Sapper was sent inside Town Hall -" Jesus stopped to chuckle - "I released twenty stray cats into the building. They made so much noise that Sapper - on more than one occasion - peed his pants in fright." Zoe laughed. "It was so embarrassing for him," said Jesus, "but he made it into the gang."

"You think he would mind if he found out?"

Verses 738-739 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Inside in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

And they said: no cheating. But I knew: because Albert was coming into Romania, the part where I live, to visit his family, and they were good friends of my family. They were very close to us. And he was always coming. But that time I knew that he wanted to take me back to Budapest with him. It was very funny: because also, on the day of Luca, we start making a chair from wood. Everybody is making this chair. And we have to keep making the chair and we cannot finish until the day before Christmas - almost like the apple. So when we finish, we put the chair inside the church. And if during the midnight mass, somebody steps on top of the chair, they are supposed to be able to see who is the witch. So Albert, he stepped on the chair, and he looked around, and everybody was looking at him, and then he looked at me, and he smiled, and he said: she is the witch, because she has bewitched me. And he asked me to marry him. Right there: standing on the chair. Everybody was waiting for me to say yes. And I purposely waited a long time. My mother: she whisper, he is crazy. And I said yes. I said really loud yes."

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 21, Giving and Receiving a Look, Paragraph 2, Clauses 7-25

I went back inside. Indiana was still sitting next to her husband. I waited in the back. I walked around. I shuffled. Intermission was over. I went back to my seat wearing an affected smile. "Is he asleep?" I said. But Indiana didn't say anything. It seemed like she was nodding her head; but she did it nervously: it was more like a series of quick shakes, as if the ground were shaking underneath her. Then she abruptly turned away and I sat down. I began staring in front of me. I started biting my lower lip. And then I realized: I had just seen Indiana doing the same thing. I realized how worried her mien was.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 13, Apprehension, Paragraph 8

And then I saw Nike in the backseat of a cab. There was no expression on his face. "Wait five minutes," he said. And then he got out. He approached a house. He was inside. He approached Luka. He punched him in the face: once, twice, repeatedly. Luka was howling. And this continued for a while. Nike did not stop. And then he spoke.

NIKE: Remember: I'm doing you a favor. This way, nobody will recognize you.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 8, Being Inattentive, Paragraphs 16-17

The door was closed, but Nike didn't have to wait long. Momentarily, the man came back, and Nike was allowed inside.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 14, Getting to the Heart of a Matter, Paragraph 47

Next to the dolls, there was a beautifully varnished music box. I took it out from the glass case and opened it. Inside, there was a beautifully carved ballerina, ready to dance in circles to the music. So I began winding the music box, expecting to hear the sound of Bartók, or perhaps the tune of some Magyar folk song - in either case, not expecting to know the music. But, when I released the knob, the ballerina began dancing to a recognizable tune. I had to chuckle: it was Henry Mancini's theme from Love Story.

Usage of Inside in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

On the fifth day I worked on my translation. Whenever I noticed something odd like a common idiom or a strange use of a word I considered it out loud. I started teaching grammar to an invisible class. My commentary attracted the interest of two village women. I caught them trying to look through the window. I invited them inside but they ran off. It occurred to me that there were many things in this world that might be of interest to an imaginary class.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes the mess we're in as a society, though hopefully you're one of those helping to clean it up

"Wait a minute," said Orbitz Número Dos. He took a cotton swab from the bowl next to the sink. He knelt by the body and passed the swab over the skin inside and outside the cheeks. "Take this to the lab and analyse it," he said. He handed the swab to Orbitz Number One. "Go," he said. "Now."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written out of respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Inside the singularity the four-dimensional tesseract squeezed into the two-dimensional space of the interbrane world. All three ships survived the implosion. In the three-dimensional bubble lelt behind time passed slowly relative to the rest of the universe. Within half an hour their velocity reversed. They swung back towards the brane they had just left. After a small change in heading to the left, a roll to the right and a small adjustment in pitch downward all three ships emerged into the Trapezium cluster. The gas giant loomed nearby. As soon as the Argo was clear of the tesseract Orbitz programmed his ship to land on the surface of the planet. Orbitz Número Dos was going to need it.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The third day at the school I heard somebody approaching the door. I expected a student or somebody but nobody went inside. There was only the sound of gently crushing grass. I thought it might be a cat. When I looked outside I saw it was an old man. He was walking along the side of the schoolhouse. He ignored my greeting and avoided my eyes. I went back inside. I heard the old man circling around. I decided to start reading aloud from Tolstoi. The man shuffled off.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes reality as we have inherited it no matter who you are

John nodded. "Unless he got another one." Proctor was already out the door. He called the policeman up. He passed him on the stairs. When he heard the door to the hallway shut he went back up a flight. To the floor below John's apartment. He found the right door. He kicked it open. Inside stood the shadow of a bed. A desk. John went to the window. He opened the curtains. He started rummaging through the drawers. He didn't have to look for long. "Dear beloved," said a letter. It listed the names of the victims. Starting with Emily.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
