North, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is poring over the practicality of compounding his immense Fiction Corpus with real adventure stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the soundness of promulgating English as a common language for the world. I don't accept the debilitating design by which English is taught.Pointer

Enriching a person's deftness for a language isn't like developing a better pair of eyeglasses. A language - a spoken tongue - is not merely an instrument that you can learn to use with greater amounts of precision. A living language cannot be isolated from the prevailing culture of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. A worthy teacher has to create a strategy for introducing it; the wisest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written language of varying scope and consistency. They might contain anything from a book about literature to a lot of elaborate fictions. I labored on my "unheroic" Fiction Corpus to form a unique type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have deconstructed them, reshaping them - not merely to teach a tongue but to reveal the human soul, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Lots of people go on road trips. Not everybody criss-crosses Europe in 46 days. Especially not with a complete stranger.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word North

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word north in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word north, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word north is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of North in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Jesus's proof came at dawn. In the coldest hour of night, he led his men to the top of St. Elizabeth's tower. But first, he had to rid it of terrorists. Standing in the northeast corner of Town Square, St. Elizabeth's had been occupied. At a height of sixty-three meters, the tower's cupola had no doubt given terrorists an excellent vantage point. At forty-six meters, the outside balcony wrapped itself around the tower completely, providing a panoramic view. Terrorist snipers hiding behind its parapet wall had harassed part of Stalin's platoon. Three of his fellow soldiers had died before the rest were captured. They wanted blood.

Verse 429 from the chapter called Arms

"I suggest," said Stalin, "that we concentrate on the eastern side, by the Architecture Museum, then move our way northeast - to the Panorama building, then swallow up that whole block where the Radisson Hotel is: that's where most of them will go once the shelling's done. They're going to try to slip through the park at night. We're gonna stop them."

Verse 470 from the chapter called Arms

Protected by the MTA (the Martian Terrestrial Authority, which was created for the purpose), the nuclear bomb was successfully transported. In the meantime, in cooperation with Panzer-Tank Mining, Yariba Corporation dug a deep tunnel into the base of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system. It's twenty-seven kilometers high! Five hundred and forty kilometers wide! I'm sure you've noticed it. They put the nuclear bomb inside the tunnel and off it went, clearing the most enormous cavern ever made. They drilled holes through the top. They drilled holes through the sides. They laid pipes. They brought water and boiled it. The steam went through the steam turbines, rose to the very top and fell back down again, going through the water turbines on the way back down to the boiler - a gigantic operation. A simple operation! A Martian child could appreciate its magnificent beauty, and, not having to wonder whence that blessed power comes, can look outside his northern window and see that brilliant topographical majesty that gives him light. Blessed Olympus! How young those Martians are when they first learn to fear her power! Give them light, Olympus! Not tyranny! Not shadow and pain! Give them light!

Verse 8 from the chapter called Childhood

"We need arms," said Jesus. "And I know where to get them. We need bridges; we need to secure every checkpoint around the Old Town - but first, we go north: to Sand Island. That will be our headquarters. We go north, penetrate the southern part of Center City, get to the armory, then bring those weapons back down to the Island. We secure the whole perimeter by converting every checkpoint to our cause - by force if we have too. Then, at dawn, you'll have your proof. We've got lots of work to do - lots of terrorists to kill. Kula, Nitka, Laska, Flak: you're in charge of weapons. Kula: you've got ammunition. Nitka: you're in charge of armor. Laska: shoulder weapons. Flak: the big guns. Stalin: you're with me. Stolarksi: you've got to secure every bridge coming out of Sand Island. Got it?"

"Got it!"

Verses 396-397 from the chapter called Arms

When the terrorists had infiltrated most of northern Germany, there happened a most interesting development. While the Reserve Army was battling terrorists in the cities of Hamburg, Bremen and Berlin (the so-called Loony Triangle), a small company of brave terrorists escaped through a cordon of Union troops that was trying to isolate and suffocate the occupied parts of eastern Berlin. At a certain checkpoint on Friedrichstrasse, Union troops had detained a red automobile in which four persons had tried to gain passage - many honest German citizens at this time were trying to escape from the occupied sections, but these four particular people had fake documents.

Nike walked as fast as he could to his car. Driving down the Rue du Colisée and the Rue de Penthièvre, he crossed the Boulevard Malesherbes, and, continuing down the Rue des Mathurins, he drove around the Opera house. At the northeast corner, he took the Rue La Fayette, but he drove too far: the Rue du Faubourg Poissonnière was going south, so Nike had to turn around at Saint Vincent de Paul, taking Rue D'Abbeville onto the Rue Condorcet before turning northward.

Longchamp Allée, however, was so long that Luka quite forgot what he was looking for, and, reaching the northeast corner of the wood, he had to ask himself where he was going. Then he cursed himself - obviously - and, turning onto Route Sablons, he promised to keep his eyes open.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraph 12

Is there a good old-fashioned Irish pub around here?" Christie wasn't sure: "There are a few big ones I know about. But I don't think they're really Irish; I think they just say that." Macy said it didn't matter, but Christie continued: "There's a place called Filthy McNasty's; I don't think you want to go there. Besides, it's too far away; there's no underground station nearby. There's a really big place on the other side of Piccadilly; I don't remember its name. You know what? You should go to the Sports Café. That place is really big; not the best place, but a lot of Americans go there - that makes it almost Irish. I don't know what the food is like though; I don't suppose it's any good." Christie had to admit she couldn't really help us; we told her that we would fend for ourselves. The three of us continued walking northeast until Macy and I could no longer hold out, and, slipping into a local pub, we told Christie to break a leg.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 9, Clauses 6-16

Passing the carrefour, he drove down Mahatma Gandhi's Avenue, and, again passing that beautiful Reine, he took the snaky road back to the Bord de l'Eau. He turned south, and, going all the way south, he turned back onto Anatole. This time, he took the road he had skipped, and, climbing north, he passed the Carrefour de Longchamp again.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraph 13

Luka was horrified. He jumped back into the front seat. He took off down the La Reine Margo, not knowing what to do except drive madly. He turned right onto Anatole Boulevard, and, skipping the first right, he cursed himself. Why go so far? he thought. Now he had to turn right on the Allée du Bord de l'Eau. And why go so far, damn it! But once he was driving north, passing the Hippodrome, he knew this way had its options. He could cut across the whole forest: first, at the south, and then, build his way north: so, at the Carrefour de Longchamp, he took the southern Avenue, crossing the Reine before reaching the next carrefour, at which point, being on the eastern side of the Bois, he went north on the road bordering the lake. Deciding not to pass the racing club, he turned left onto the Route de Grande Cascade. But this brought him back to the Reine, and that was not helpful.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Neal followed Tatum to the rover park. He knew they wouldn't let her go by herself. He purchased a deluxe PLSS+ speed rover package for two. He paid the extra insurance for going alone. He bribed the sales clerk to get them on the road as soon as he could.

They drove north. As they neared the peaks of eternal light, Tatum spotted a vehicle. It was approaching an access tower. "That's the one," said Tatum. "Step on it."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring icky aliens

The man murmured back the greeting. He walked briskly to the only other door in the room. He glanced at the woman. She was North Eurasian. She had short hair. She was wearing coveralls. The man stopped himself from huffing in scorn. He liked fashionable women. He said, "Is he ready?"

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring weird aliens who live on the dark side of the moon

Luka took a moment to think. It was difficult with the opium. He drove further down the Reine. He took a left. He reached an intersecting road. He took the right. He stopped. He realized he was too far south. He backed up. He took the left. He passed a suspiciously familiar-looking avenue. He kept going. He reached the end. The road was one way. He had to go north. He thought he saw tennis courts. He reached the end. The road was one way. He had to go right. He reached a lake. Again he almost drove into it. "Damn it," he cried. "There must be a way out."

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story about a woman and the man who didn't quite love her

Luka took a short cut. He turned abruptly onto the Route du Point du Jour à Bagatelle. He reached the cul-de-sac. Long green lawns glimmered through the trees. He veered onto the Route de la Longue Queue. He would shadow the Reine north. He could reach the Boulevard. Avenue Charles de Gaulle would be a stone's throw away.

There she was. She was on the right side of the road, waiting to cross. Luka slowed. He stopped in front of her. He looked into the back. Nike was still unconscious.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring prostitution

Peace arrived in Naples. Condotierri moved north. Ferrari, sick of war and disillusioned with its bitter-sweet fruits, went south. He was in the mood for love. He possessed new skills in the art of music. He was young and handsome. More importantly, he was a veteran.

MS. JACKSON: Tell me more about Egypt. You were saying something about locusts.

LESBIAN: When I arrived in November the country was under attack. Locusts were everywhere: in the north, in the south, in the east, in the west. Farmers who couldn't afford pesticides were burning tires to survive. It just so happened I arrived in Cairo at the exact moment that the swarm was passing through on its way to the Red Sea.

MS. JACKSON: Where did they come from?

LESBIAN: West Africa. They crossed the Sahara to get there. They were very hungry. They would fall onto your plate and get stuck in your glass. By the time I got to Aswan, the regional governor offered a two hundred Egyptian pound reward for any information leading to the destruction of a swarm.

MS. JACKSON: Did you find one?

LESBIAN: No.

MS. JACKSON: Does that sort of thing happen often? A swarm of locusts sounds so biblical.

LESBIAN: The very next year I took a trip to Hawai'i. They were suffering from a gall wasp invasion.

MS. JACKSON: What's a gall wasp?

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
