Off, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is debating the thought of augmenting his towering Fiction Corpus with a retelling of the christmas story; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the concept of administering English as a global standard. I don't regard highly the regular process by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Strengthening a person's adeptness with a language isn't like promoting a stronger mast. A language - a living language - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A common tongue can't be bisected from the competing values of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching pupils to recite English is to strip them of its cultural context. An informed instructor must find a method of introducing it; the wisest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of written works of various size and consistency. A corpus might include anything from a book about literature to a copious amount of books that are non fiction. I watched many nights pass forging my "extravagant" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have shaped a million words and I have divided them, reshaping them - not simply to teach an American language but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

On the second to last weekend of June, 2011, I had joined my fellow naturists at a gathering of the Naturist Society in rural Pennsylvania. The next day I left on a flight for Europe. By the end of the week I had unexpectedly met another naturist, a woman, who was destined to accompany me on a tour of Europe's great naturist resorts.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

I've never been married. I've never been divorced. I've never had kids. I've never lost my kids. That doesn't mean I can't try to understand somebody who has. By listening to Margo during our trip across Europe I started to consider her needs as if they were my own. I may not have been in a position to satisfy all of those needs, but I was able to shut up and put my own needs aside if I had to for at least 6,000 miles. We all need to be listened to and it is the one need that we all have a duty to satisfy. When somebody prays to another human, as a human you have a duty to listen. Humanity needs to start teaching itself that skill.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Off

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word off in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word off, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word off is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

The ball bounced off the plate, which fell down but didn't break. We laughed.

"Wait a minute," said Sapper. "Watch me break it." He propped it against the wall again. This time, from three meters away, Sapper threw the basketball. BOOM-CRACK! went the Plexiglas.

"Congratulations," we said, and ran.

Several days later, we were at her house again. Her father came out, walked right by us without saying a single word, left, came back, and then gave Jesus a dirty look.

The next day, we went back to her house and she said, "I can't play with you boys right now." So we left.

Then, a few days later, we saw Sapper outside her house playing with the girl, so we joined them. But then, the girl left: all of a sudden, she said she couldn't play anymore.

Verses 223-228 from the chapter called Childhood

By the end of that year, the Governor-general's office and person were gone. In their place reigned a most bizarre and unfamiliar creature: the red, green and blue flag of Revolution. Nobody on Earth or anyplace else for that matter knew about it - not yet. In fact, nobody knew anything. All contact was lost with the red planet: the whole thing just fell silent. The last ships to leave were quarantined once they arrived in Earth's orbit; their crews were interrogated. Nobody seemed to know much - that's what the Americans claimed.

Verse 129 from the chapter called Childhood

Once upon a time, in fairy book land (that is, medieval Europe), there was a thing called common ground. This almost mythical farmland was controlled by individual farmers only during the growing and harvesting seasons. After that, until the next growing season, it was freely available for grazing and for other purposes. Land with a fence around it, or a hedge, was off limits - enclosed, so to speak. In those days, mankind ruled. Then came a time of change. A strange, new king came to rule in Britain. His name was Progress the First. His Queen was Greed; they named their son, Efficiency, the crown prince. They enclosed all the land in Britain. Other nations soon followed suit. By fiat, they encouraged the enclosure of land. Germany encouraged, then France and Denmark - even the Russian czar. But Poland was among the last: we clung to our old ways. We felt the common ground slipping from underneath our feet. Finally, we had to give way. Progress ruled.

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

It was the most garish thing I had seen in quite a long while, but we were at Vinnie's, and all the loudest customers seemed to be enjoying it. In fact, someone enjoyed it so much, he offered two hundred and five dollars for the first one, who was by far the more attractive. The other one wasn't too shabby, and she received a winning bid of a hundred and seventy-five. No one before them had broken a hundred, and I was worried that Barbara would be disappointed. Not that I should've been worried, because everyone was well on his way to being wasted, and the whole thing was ridiculous anyway. But I was worried nonetheless, and I told Luke to be prepared.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 7, Dating a Woman with Dogs, Paragraph 4

It's in the pit of the wild cherry too - or at least most kinds; but then it's not always in the pit, you know: the leaves of wild black cherry kill animals all the time." The poor girl with the peach orchard, noticing that her conversation was being hijacked, promptly offered her own interesting factoid, mentioning how nectarines would sometimes magically appear on peach trees. "But I thought nectarines were peaches." And so they were, as Nike had to explain to me; the point was that even though they were the same species, nectarines were a special variety, et cetera, and would not otherwise appear on the same tree if not for such and such a process, which the girl endeavored to explain to me.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 8, Partying with Intellectuals, Paragraph 3, Clauses 8-12

Unfortunately, I did suspect, as I do now, that the appeal to dignity is far less effective than the appeal of adultery. It was a good thing that Ms. Walters decided to play religious works for the second half of the show: hopefully, it stopped your mind from wandering. But perhaps I am being unfair: I suppose it's entirely possible, if the weeping Indiana had accepted your offer, that you would have played her, like a true Catholic gentleman, the Stabat Mater. But even if that were the case, I would still have my doubts that consoling the poor woman was the only thing on your mind. Your failure to mention this episode to me is evidence against you; it has also made me question your innocence in that other episode, one of the ones you actually decided to mention (as it happened so long ago): the now infamous "look."

GREY GOOSE: You're in love with my son.

KOKOMO: What's it to you?

GREY GOOSE: Does he return your affection?

KOKOMO: He should know.

GREY GOOSE: This is why you always opposed me.

KOKOMO: I always opposed you, Grey Goose, because you stink - like old burning wood with fungus on it - like ammonia when I'm cleaning up cat poo - like the bar when you and Fletcher drink too much Guinness and I have to go peel his face off the table and you have to stand right next to me and fart. That's why I opposed you.

AT RISE: KOKOMO is wiping up the floor.

KOKOMO: Clean. Clean. Clean. We are obsessed by cleaning. If space is a giant vacuum, why does all the dust settle here: underneath the table? Why not in the middle of the floor? Where I can see it? Where I can wipe it up with my feet? We know perfectly well why, don't we, Kokomo? Master Fletcher can't be bothered to take off his shoes. Thanks to him, it's: 'wipe the floor, Kokomo.' Yes, Ms. Jackson. 'Clean the kitchen, girl.' Yes, Ms. Jackson. 'When is lunch, dear?' I don't know, Ms. Jackson. Honestly, where does all this dust come from? What am I supposed to do with it? There really is no sense in cleaning more than once a month. Let the moon show when it's time to clean. Ms. Jackson certainly doesn't know. She would have me clean my way right into an early grave. "You tell me," said Proctor. John's eyes searched desperately for some understanding. Proctor seized his arms. "You tell me," he repeated.

This was more convenient for him. He put his box for 1 Update Street next to the box for 1 Download Hill.
