Onto, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's ruminating on the possibility of amplifying his awe-inspiring Fiction Corpus with a treatise on large canvas art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the feasibility of exploiting English as everyone's second language. I do challenge the unimaginative process by which English is taught.Pointer

Enhancing one's handiness with a language isn't like pioneering a bigger bomb. A language - a common language - is not merely an instrument that you can learn to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A living tongue can not be insulated from the professed knowledge of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. An informed educator has to develop a technique for introducing it; the smartest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a specific corpus, a set of written language of varying size and consistency. Such a corpus may include everything from a book about literature to some really short stories online. I burnt many candles laboring on my "tremendous" Fiction Corpus to form a peculiar class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have strung together a million words and I have dissected them, reframing them - not simply to teach the English language but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to prod that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Onto

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word onto in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word onto, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word onto is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Onto in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Meanwhile, the investigation into Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's death was gaining massive media coverage. The videotapes were sensational. They showed Zoe Guderian going out onto the balcony. They showed a security guard being thrown a gun. They showed a man walking up the stairs to the third floor and then entering Zoe Guderian's room. They showed another man suddenly appearing from the balcony. They showed the man who entered Zoe Guderian's room suddenly appearing from the corner of Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's office and threatening him with a gun. They showed the man from the balcony taking down a mirror and opening the door. They showed a man's legs reflected in the mirror - not his face. "Thank God," said Jesus. They showed the man whose reflection was just in the mirror lowering his weapon while Leonard Cohen-Krupnik removed one from his drawer. They showed Leonard Cohen-Krupnik raising his gun and shooting it before being shot. Then it showed the two men disappearing from the balcony. How bizarre!

Verse 3 from the chapter called Vows

With the lounge emptied, there was only going to be one guard on the way to Zoe's room. He was the independent variable. There was a chance that he could be in the darkened lounge, or next to the doorway to the kitchen, or, worst of all, on the stairs to the third floor. He would have to be subdued. The problem was that there were security cameras everywhere. If the lounge were darkened, as was planned, there was a good chance that my activities there would go largely unnoticed. Only my passage to Zoe's room would be cause for alarm, but not enough to make the security director inform Leonard Cohen-Krupnik, at least not until he had sent someone to investigate. With one guard strangely unavailable, he would have to send the fourth-floor guard. While that guard were busy trying to unlock or break down Zoe's door, I would already be half-way through the air-conditioning duct. Stalin, having received my call (meaning that the first guard had been subdued) would already have swung onto the balcony and, having entered the darkened salon, would be waiting behind the door to the hallway. As soon as he heard my cries from Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's office, he would rush into the hallway, take the mirror off the wall, lean it against him, and, turning around and opening the double doors as if he were Zoe returning, my attention diverted, I would immediately turn around to face him and, pointing my pistol away from Leonard Cohen-Krupnik - just in case I didn't hear the left-hand topmost drawer opening, or the hammer of a gun being cocked - Stalin would, as quickly as possible, maneuver the mirror into such a place as would allow me, first, to witness Leonard Cohen-Krupnik raising his gun, and then, to avert mortal sin and felonious crime as I, in the last second, turned back and, kneeling to the side, avoided his greedy bullet while, simultaneously, sending him to his ultimate judgment. It was a brilliant plan, but dependent on God.

Verse 1148 from the chapter called Security

When the conductor finally arrived, Dulles opened up his tailgate and pulled up his tarp. Inside, a small squad of soldiers had already snuggled themselves onto a foam cushion that was lying on the floor. I found a small place for myself and lay down.

Verse 170 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Take it!" he said. She took it. She grabbed onto it with both her hands. Jesus started to pull.

Verse 488 from the chapter called Security

Jesus followed them onto the main road. He knew that they were parked at Town Square - he had seen their car on the way back to the club: who else could possibly have driven a custom-made sports car into Treblinka? Only a Krupnik. As far as Jesus knew, this was the only Krupnik in town that night. If his car was parked at Town Square, Jesus could beat them to it. At the fork in the road (where the Town Office Building was), Jesus veered left, onto Church Road, which led directly to the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul - whereas they had turned right, continuing along the main road which led directly to Town Square. Jesus started running. He ran all along Church Road, uphill, turning right onto Linden Flower Road in front of the brick church's red walls and black-shuttered windows, which were closed. He sprinted all the way to the main road. When he got there, he wasn't sure if he were late or on time; he wasn't about to check around the corner. He put his back against the wall.

Verse 612 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of Onto in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Right now, it's still Monday morning; the sun is shining through the window: there's nothing mournful about that: it's the sign of a new beginning, the promise of a fresh week to start work, to exercise oneself before the freedom of a Friday afternoon claims the flesh. Perhaps these orderlies will shake themselves free and wake up before Albert does, but I doubt that.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 2, Poetics, Paragraph 6, Clauses 1-2

Nike will find, I'm afraid, that someday he'll be shocked by happiness; he will discover that most precious gem, that perfect construction of existence, hiding behind the curtains of the window or peeking out from under the radiator, on the top shelf in the walk-in closet, in the basement, under the boxes of not-to-be-thrown-away garbage, or shrouded behind cobwebs, next to the boiler.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 1, Cancer, Paragraph 1, Clause 1

The events of the past few days were already incomprehensible when I had to live them. Now that they are part of my memory, they are made even more incomprehensible. Now that I know that all this time Albert was suffering from this inoperable recurrence of cancer, my recent memory has transmuted itself into a massive object of strange and irregular proportions.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 4, Self-image, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

You remember what she said at the door? She said: "Albert is always working. He works nonstop: nothing but work, work, work. I am afraid to leave him alone with Olympia. One time, he was in the room with her. He was working of course. And Olympia was jumping on the mattress in her crib. She jumped right out of it! She jumped over the railing. Not only that, but she flipped: in mid-air she flipped around. Luckily too - because that way she must have fell on her back. But she was holding onto the railing - you know? when she jumped? That's why she flipped. Otherwise, she would be dead right now: kaput. She would have fall right on the head. Good thing she is older: she will not crack it. But God knows, she will poke her eye out with scissors and Albert will not even notice. How are you, Giant? You are looking very handsome today, like always - very nice. I wish you all the best on the occasion of your name-day."

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

The lovers relied on luck. On more than one occasion, as his father climbed the ladder, Ferrari had to leap quickly onto the porch, praying that nobody saw him. Lorenzo, who had taken to long walks, would return by way of the garden. It was most inconvenient.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring a frank discussion of virtue

The first time he returned, he could hear a flaut being played in the hall. Going around through the garden, he walked onto the back porch. In the kitchen, he could see his stepmother kneeling on the floor, grasping her enormous breasts. She was squeezing milk into a deep bowl. He cleared his throat. His stepmother looked up. Staring blankly, she made no attempt to lift the chemise gathered around her ample waist.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring an attractive stepmother

The rider squinted. He put away his bow. He lifted his spear. He kicked his heels into his horse. He hurtled towards Gog. The spear leveled. Gog watched as the horseman's steed threw up a cloud of dirt behind him. They were close. They were right in front of him. Gog lobbed the straight sword into the path of the beast's eye. It saw the metal gleam. Its head jerked. The rider lost balance. Gog twanged the sickle sword against the spearhead. He grabbed a hold of the rider's arm. He pulled him off. He threw him. The rider rolled. His helmet flew. His scabbard dug into his side. He winced. He didn't have time to hurt. Gog was coming towards him. He climbed onto his feet. He drew his sword. Gog balked.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring idiot kings

They reached the apartment. They found the door drilled open. Atrium furniture was knocked over. The Manga person was on the ground. Tatum turned her onto her back. She made sure she was still breathing. "The map!" she cried. "Where is it?"

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a lesbian detective

"Women played it before they took the men's game. It's a shame you abandoned it. Netball is a very democratic sport. For example, you can only hold onto the ball for three seconds. Everybody has to stay in her zone. There's no dribbling. You have to keep passing. It's all about out-maneuvering your opponent. It takes skill and endurance, not strength."

Debbie chuckled. "It sounds like the perfect sport for you, hubby."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: Good. My mother's been trying to stop her. I don't blame her for that. I feel sorry for the poor girl. Her story is a sad one. Kokomo's grandmother was raped by the Japanese while they were occupying the island of Upolu in Western Samoa. That's where Kokomo was born. Her mother was the product of that horrendous crime. Though they were the victims, both mother and child were ostracized by their tribe. Even after her mother had grown up, only the Catholic priest would take pity on them. Kokomo was the product of that pity. Eventually, she went to American Samoa to work as a prostitute for the tuna canners. One day, she came home with fifty thousand dollars and a baby. It turned out her pimp had threatened to kill her if she didn't have an abortion. Unfortunately, Kokomo made the ill-advised decision, once the baby came, to run away with the pimp's money. He ended up tracking her down. When he showed up at the mother's hut, Kokomo, in a state of pure shock, burned the money. The guy flipped out, killed her mother, slit the baby's throat, burned down the hut and forced her onto his boat. On their way to Pago Pago, they were hijacked by a bunch of pirates from Fiji. They killed the pimp and then realized he didn't have anything worthwhile except for the girl. While they stood around, trying to decide what to do, Kokomo offered them the greatest sex they would ever have in their entire lives: on the condition that they release her. They figured: why not? They could do whatever they wanted with her no matter what happened. Kokomo blew their minds. They were so satisfied, they stuck to the deal. They let her go in Fiji, where they begged her to stay and work as a prostitute. Kokomo agreed to do it, but only until she made up the fifty thousand dollars that she burned: the money that killed her mother and her newborn baby.

Farmers who couldn't afford pesticides were burning tires to survive. It just so happened I arrived in Cairo at the exact moment that the swarm was passing through on its way to the Red Sea.

MS. JACKSON: Where did they come from?

LESBIAN: West Africa. They crossed the Sahara to get there. They were very hungry. They would fall onto your plate and get stuck in your glass. By the time I got to Aswan, the regional governor offered a two hundred Egyptian pound reward for any information leading to the destruction of a swarm.

MS. JACKSON: Did you find one?

LESBIAN: No.

MS. JACKSON: Does that sort of thing happen often? A swarm of locusts sounds so biblical.

Usage of Onto in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Indiana lay her head on the crook of my neck. I slid my fingers beneath her underwear. I lifted her onto my hands. I held her by the skin of her bottom. I rocked her. I kept pace with her lilting chest. Our shoulders rose and fell. We were like a mother and child.

She told me Albert was sick. He was going to die. I cooed. I kissed her on the cheek. I told her I would put her to bed.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's sense of distaste depending on your outlook

Grandmother laughed. "I married his son. He was named after his father. His face came from somewhere else - most people suspected the village headman. I liked your Grandfather very much growing up. He was a good boy. I made sure he was the one I saw."

"How did you do it?" I asked. "Did you trick him into climbing onto the roof?"

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's fears depending on your outlook

Orbitz typed. "Show me the log." A list of all actions aboard ship appeared. Orbitz immediately saw the problem. Between his last depature and return the log had recorded three authorized entries. Somebody was on board. Orbitz typed, "Who came onto the ship?"

Marriott took an even longer moment to respond. "You did," she wrote. Something was wrong.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance based on my affection for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Orbitz pretended to consider the offer. It was obviously out of the question. Marriott's CPU was all the way in the Orion cluster. That's where he was heading. To steal her. There was no reason to waste time on a interstellar download. "Not now," said Orbitz. "There'll be time for that."

"How do I know?" asked a voice. It was coming from the door to the corridor. A man stepped onto the bridge. Except for the scars on his body he looked just like Orbitz.

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
