South, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's wrestling with the prospect of reinforcing his proud Fiction Corpus with a book about science fiction classics; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the prospect of legislating English as a universal language. I don't believe in the vapid manner in which the English language is taught.Pointer

Refining one's knowledge of a language isn't like making a safer match. A language - a living tongue - is not merely a tool that you can learn to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A spoken language can't be pulled from the professed knowledge of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A good teacher must develop a plan for introducing it; the smartest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words based on a specific corpus, a set of written language of various scope and consistency. Such a corpus can include everything from a book about literature to a bunch of narrative fiction. I lost many a sleepless night creating my "colossal" Fiction Corpus in order to form a unique class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have framed a million words and I have dissected them, reshaping them - not just to teach the English tongue but to describe the human soul, and to prod that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word South

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word south in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word south, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word south is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of South in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

With quickened pace, I went south by southwest. I stumbled onto a beautiful thing: a boletus with a brown cap, brown and white striations along its entire length, a fairly long stem with a short and stubby chunk at the bottom. It was tender - seemingly tough but delicate, seemingly rough but soft. Nicknamed 'Cossack,' like the free men who dwelt in the East, like the peasants who escaped from serfdom, she was endangered: she was covered by a hideous fly agaric. The beast had grown up right next to her, casting his cold, inescapable shadow on top of that lonely Cossack with his bright red-orange poisonous cap. I went to take her away, but I was careless: I ripped her cap. Lifting her up, I carefully cleaned her foot. Putting her into my bag, I let the fly agaric live. Blessed was he for sheltering my Cossack. Looking up, in the distance, I saw the wretched beast's accursed father: the largest fly agaric I had ever seen. He was seated on a hill, enormous and disgustingly proud. I threw a rock and crushed it.

Verse 15 from the chapter called Bohemia

"They're trying to stop the terrorists from moving north; they don't care about the southeast that much - terrorists are all over the train yards - Lipski doesn't even know what to do about it. He's got terrorists in the southeast (around the train yards); he's got terrorists in the west (around all the industrial parks) - but at least they're south of the river; he's in the north, coming down; he's got his artillery on the north bank of the old river, on the other side of which, sections of Center City have been evacuated; others have not; some are full of terrorists; others are not. What's for damn sure is that south of us, across the main river, the Old Town is completely infested. Government buildings have been taken over, et cetera, et cetera. Lipski's got his hands full; he's got absolutely no idea what the fuck a terrorist even looks like. A collaborator could be anyone: if you're walking down the street with a gun, you're collaborating - you're not trying to defend yourself: you're collaborating. If you're looting a store, or robbing your neighbors, or otherwise committing some kind of offense: you're collaborating.

Verse 120 from the chapter called Arms

Nobody knew how long it would take to get Stalin discharged. The process could last; it could also be very brief. Without Stalin, it would've been almost impossible to blackmail SECURITA CORPORATION successfully. It wasn't about money; it was about a contract. The man whom they planned to contact - the franchise owner responsible for the southwestern border - after verifying that bribes had indeed taken place (if he himself had not been bribed) would then have to reveal everything to his corporate superiors.

Verse 127 from the chapter called Security

The Reserve Army division (whose general staff headquarters had been placed in Treblinka) was supposed to be preventing terrorists from joining up with their brethren in Poznan (to the north) or else from filtering through the southwestern Polish countryside towards the nearest spaceport around, located a few miles south of Warsaw. The Reserve Army, in the few weeks since Wroclaw had fallen under terrorist siege, had made several very important and surprising accomplishments: it had finally stopped favoring Germany and German interests; it had finally looked past the so-called 'Looney Triangle' of Hamburg, Bremen, and Berlin; it had finally considered the possibility that terrorists were being manipulated (or else directly controlled) by an agent or agents whose agendas had very little in common with terrorists' traditional goals of killing Americans and their allies - after all, what the hell were they doing on planet Earth? They had plenty of soft targets in outer space and especially in Earth's orbit - they were consciously neglecting them. That made no sense whatsoever. The Reserve Army finally deployed two divisions east. As an afterthought, one was sent down to Silesia, while the main contingent made a beeline to the capital. Thanks to them, Jesus found his way out.

Verse 8 from the chapter called Bohemia

My cousin Stalin was able to procure for us a record of all authorized shipments from the Czech Republic, especially those from Brno which had passed through the southwestern border since the terrorist insurgency in Germany. Meanwhile, Sapper was sent with a blank check to the diesel fuel station at the border - "the only diesel fuel station around for miles," according to his old friend Washington Dulles. Your father told him to buy everything: the whole station: the building, the record books, the fuel. Sapper got it all for a nice, little price. The owner almost blew his load out of gratitude.

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Nike walked as fast as he could to his car. Driving down the Rue du Colisée and the Rue de Penthièvre, he crossed the Boulevard Malesherbes, and, continuing down the Rue des Mathurins, he drove around the Opera house. At the northeast corner, he took the Rue La Fayette, but he drove too far: the Rue du Faubourg Poissonnière was going south, so Nike had to turn around at Saint Vincent de Paul, taking Rue D'Abbeville onto the Rue Condorcet before turning northward.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 14, Getting to the Heart of a Matter, Paragraph 1

I amused my company with a story about how I first came to London, and how I took the Underground to Leicester Square, and then proceeded to walk toward Shakespeare's Globe for a performance. "According to the Underground map," I said, "it was only a hop, skip, and a jump across the footbridge. But, after crossing the River, there were absolutely no signs for the Globe. And, with half an hour to go, the South Bank kept stretching in front of me, until finally I had to run for it. That was the first and last time I used a Tube map to navigate. It took an Olympian effort to make that show, especially since I didn't even have tickets. Luckily, they were able to squeeze in another groundling; but after hauling myself across that bank, no matter how good they were I could hardly stand the performance."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 11, The Underground, Paragraph 7

Passing the carrefour, he drove down Mahatma Gandhi's Avenue, and, again passing that beautiful Reine, he took the snaky road back to the Bord de l'Eau. He turned south, and, going all the way south, he turned back onto Anatole. This time, he took the road he had skipped, and, climbing north, he passed the Carrefour de Longchamp again.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraph 13

Luka was horrified. He jumped back into the front seat. He took off down the La Reine Margo, not knowing what to do except drive madly. He turned right onto Anatole Boulevard, and, skipping the first right, he cursed himself. Why go so far? he thought. Now he had to turn right on the Allée du Bord de l'Eau. And why go so far, damn it! But once he was driving north, passing the Hippodrome, he knew this way had its options. He could cut across the whole forest: first, at the south, and then, build his way north: so, at the Carrefour de Longchamp, he took the southern Avenue, crossing the Reine before reaching the next carrefour, at which point, being on the eastern side of the Bois, he went north on the road bordering the lake. Deciding not to pass the racing club, he turned left onto the Route de Grande Cascade. But this brought him back to the Reine, and that was not helpful.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraph 10

And each plant only produces one bunch of fruit." But someone argued that this was a strike against bananas, since they required so much pruning, a labor-intensive task not to be compared with orchard cultivation. This inspired someone to criticize the banana for exploiting the worker, pointing out how U.S. corporations have always dominated the South American industry. This did not sit well with Banana War boy, and the climate of the conversation continued to warm, until, after Nike mentioned that bananas are available year-round, someone cried out excitedly and said, "You see! You can always count on bananas for your cereal! Well here's the real test, who likes what with their breakfast?"

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Luka took a moment to think. It was difficult with the opium. He drove further down the Reine. He took a left. He reached an intersecting road. He took the right. He stopped. He realized he was too far south. He backed up. He took the left. He passed a suspiciously familiar-looking avenue. He kept going. He reached the end. The road was one way. He had to go north. He thought he saw tennis courts. He reached the end. The road was one way. He had to go right. He reached a lake. Again he almost drove into it. "Damn it," he cried. "There must be a way out."

Junior wanted to ask Nyota if she liked baseball. It might have made him sound solicitous. "Do they have baseball where you're from? I take it you're not from Kentucky." Junior smiled. He thought, "Not bad." It was politely confrontational-the very essence of flirtation.

"I'm from South Africa," she said. Junior nodded. "I know we have a national team. I think we lost to the United States seventeen to nothing. They had to stop the game early."

"There is no doubt," they said. "The autumnal equal-night passes from the Scorpion's claws to Heavens' mistress [e.g. Virgo]. Southern peoples worship the claws as scales of justice. If Indra has ordered Asvin to abandon justice, there is no hope. Wealth will continue to erode at the hands of the Paralatai. Southern peoples will be tempted to invade. Many of them worship the woman. The highlands call her Ishtar; the lowlands, Inanna."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: Oh, Money! God of first fruits! Bringer of knowledge! Harvester of truth! Where would Man be without thy cold kindness? Give me your hand. Let the lorikeets squeak out the rhythm of our steps. We'll dance a polonaise. I'll sashay you around the South Pacific. Who could prove to be a better partner? No man could be as faithful; no woman either. Even if she bleed by the moon, her temper is not as mild. Obedience notwithstanding, her character can seem, at times, positively restive. Feistiness is a woman's most vicious virtue. It can burn a man's pride even while it warms his heart. In truth, a man who marries money is liable to finding a bed so stiff the kingfisher would laugh. Without it, one would cry at night like the ghost bird. Thanks to money, nature is Man's slave. Weathering the vicissitudes of fortune, the wealthy man works the ground for as long as the ground does not work him. When that day comes, let's hope that our money has not defrauded us of our nature.

– ACT I, line 797

(ALICE and FLETCHER exit. LESBIAN and MS. JACKSON enter with their tea.)

MS. JACKSON: Tell me more about Egypt. You were saying something about locusts.

LESBIAN: When I arrived in November the country was under attack. Locusts were everywhere: in the north, in the south, in the east, in the west. Farmers who couldn't afford pesticides were burning tires to survive. It just so happened I arrived in Cairo at the exact moment that the swarm was passing through on its way to the Red Sea.

MS. JACKSON: Where did they come from?

LESBIAN: West Africa. They crossed the Sahara to get there. They were very hungry. They would fall onto your plate and get stuck in your glass. By the time I got to Aswan, the regional governor offered a two hundred Egyptian pound reward for any information leading to the destruction of a swarm.

MS. JACKSON: Did you find one?

LESBIAN: No.

MS. JACKSON: Does that sort of thing happen often? A swarm of locusts sounds so biblical.

LESBIAN: The very next year I took a trip to Hawai'i. They were suffering from a gall wasp invasion.

MS. JACKSON: What's a gall wasp?

– ACT I, lines 496-504

MS. JACKSON: I will go insane if I don't find out.

GREY GOOSE: It's all very simple. These two have been running a racket: a confidence game. Kokomo plays the prostitute, whose story is so ridiculous it must be true. Finding out for oneself is the challenge. If she's the best lay in the South Pacific, one should know the difference.

FLETCHER: Satisfaction guaranteed.

GREY GOOSE: Cash comes rolling in.

MS. JACKSON: I don't understand. What happens when-

FLETCHER: By the time they get to bed, they think she's a charity case.

GREY GOOSE: She vomits on them and that's it.

MS. JACKSON: Vomits?

FLETCHER: It turns me off.

MS. JACKSON: How?

Usage of South in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The giant hill of stupidity was located five miles south of downtown East Farmville. Making it 5.1 miles from the new East Farmville post office. It was created under the local dictatorship of postmaster Steve the Second. Nobody blamed him personally for it. At least not in front of his face. Not that everybody lost on the deal. Just the rural carriers as usual.

The girl behind the counter had a slight frame. She was cute. My first thought was that making love to her might break her in half. I had to shake the image out of my head. I was sure she was underage. When I told her where I was heading she nodded and said it was an easy place to miss. She had just moved there from the capital. She told me she had hitchhiked south and the last person to pick her up worked at the camp and had offered to get her the job. She was afraid he would want something in return but he didn't. "If you know what I mean," she said. She told me her name was Kelly. She was a talkative girl. I asked her how old she was. She said eighteen.

– from “Two Years,” an adult fiction story about a lady at a women's prison

The house nearest the bottom of the hill lay between Update and Download streets. It had its official front door on Update Street. The entrance to its driveway was on Download Street. The address said 1 Update Street and was assigned to Rural Route 6 but the man who lived there decided one day that he would prefer to pick up his mail from his car as he got home from work. This was more convenient for him. He put his box for 1 Update Street next to the box for 1 Download Hill. The postman on Rural Route 6 was now expected to end his trip down the hill at the same spot where the postman for Rural Route 2 ended his trip. To make matters better, the man on 1 Update Street had planted a hedgerow on the southern edge of his property twenty years earlier. This was done obviously with the intention of pissing off the mailmen.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
