Toward, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's debating the potency of reinforcing his gallant Fiction Corpus with a history of social reforms; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the potential of using English as a worldwide language. I don't believe in the routinely sanctioned style in which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Beefing up one's expertness with a language isn't like launching a cheaper printing press. A language - a common language - isn't just an instrument that you can teach yourself to wield with greater amounts of precision. A common language can not be dissociated from the shared logic of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. An informed instructor has to develop a plan for introducing it; the wisest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language based on a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying scope and consistency. A corpus might include anything from a book about literature to many books of fiction. I watched many nights pass developing my "epic" Fiction Corpus to form a different genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have constructed a million words and I have ordered them, reformulating them - not simply to teach the English tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Toward

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word toward in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word toward, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word toward is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Toward in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Clouds brought fire to man. That cold breath of wet air that separates the positive away from the negative by lifting the positive up into the higher regions and leaving the rest alone, clumped together and shivering, decided to leave at the very bottom of the clouds a small blanketlike layer of the positive, which, for a while, protected Earth from the negative's wrath, but which was quickly devoured by that great mass and, giving way, permitted a fiery discharge of negative currents to come crashing down toward the Earth, summoning up, by methods I fail to understand, an opposing discharge from the point that otherwise would have been struck, which, as I've been told, met the fiery discharge approximately fifty meters above the ground and caused a great luminosity to flash and propagate itself back toward the clouds, reaching speeds near one-tenth the speed of light and temperatures around thirty-thousand Kelvin which heated the air and sent a massive shock wave expanding at supersonic speeds in either direction for about a meter before decaying into a sound wave, a massive clap, that rang in the ears of the first upright man to hear it, who saw the Light, who knew it to be God, or at least someone or something who was very angry - at him, perhaps, which made his whole hairy body stand on end and which scared the living bejesus out of him.

Verse 1 from the chapter called Security

When the former heroin dealer left his house, I followed. From a discreet distance, I watched him go down the hill that led to the main road. There was a heath on the right side. Beyond the heath was the convent. At one of its back corners, my prey turned right, onto a path that led behind the convent wall. Cutting across the heath, I ran crossways toward the end of that path, and, pushing through the dense greenery that separated it from the heath, I waited. When the unsuspecting man was passing right in front of me, there was no hesitation. I pushed him into the convent wall.

Verse 779 from the chapter called Adolescence

We had no trouble slipping by a barricade. The soldiers were very busy; in fact, they were too busy to stop us and ask us important questions like: who the hell are you? and, where are you going? As long as we weren't heading toward them from the Old Town, they weren't going to waste any time or ammunition. The terrorists, on the other hand, must not have gotten the message. Perhaps it was too dark to see the Krupnik's red hood. Perhaps they weren't looking hard enough. Perhaps they didn't even fucking care. It was probably just some idiotic way of convincing a business partner like Baron Cohen-Krupnik that he would be safe in the event that some unexpected development necessitated his entry into dark zones occupied by terrorists. They were shooting at us, and they kept shooting at us until we passed. Perhaps they thought we were some kind of suicide bomber sent by the good guys. That would've been original. But no, we were collaborators. We were businessmen. Nothing was going to stop us from making a killing.

Verse 131 from the chapter called Arms

The whole day was spent on the battlefield. The first day, my excuse had been the mellophone; on the second day, Mass; the third day, she ran away; on the fourth, I was unprepared. Saying goodbye might have been awkward, but, near the end - or, rather, what I felt like should be the end, thanks to my rumbling stomach (your mother seemed to be suppressing her appetite) - I steered the conversation toward your mother's musical talents, which she claimed were, in terms of instrument familiarity, very broad (thanks to her mother's insistence), but which, in terms of quality, she also claimed were, on the whole, rather meager, if not embarrassing.

"Is that also your mother's fault?"

Verses 1011-1012 from the chapter called Bohemia

After the spaceport was recaptured, terrorists appeared in the Polish city of Poznan, which lies east of Berlin and directly north of Treblinka and the city of Wroclaw. This development was not unexpected, but, considering recent developments, people wondered whether a connection might exist between the failed attempt at lift-off on the part of the captured Martian terrorist and the sudden eastward expansion of the continental terrorist war, possibly toward the nearest spaceport after Kummersdorf, located a few miles south of Warsaw, directly to the east of Poznan. If that were true, perhaps Wroclaw would be spared from terrorist attacks, people said. All the time, they talked about Zeus and the captured Martian terrorist: his failed attempt at lift-off.

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

The doors of his fireplace were wide open; on his wrought-iron grid, hovering above a deep pile of ash, two burnt-out logs leaned against each other, one slightly larger than the other, seeming to impose its cold embrace on the weaker one, the one more black with charring, more exhausted by the heat of former flames. There was soot everywhere in front of the fireplace, creeping toward a pile of old newspapers. And there were more logs, fresh ones lying nearby in a haphazard pile. It was so cold in that room that I wanted to start a fire. But I didn't dare: the smell of Macy was still hanging in the air.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 9, Intoxication, Paragraph 2

Finally, I knew where I was, and I suggested we go to St. James's Park; everyone agreed. So we started walking toward the River. And before long, we turned a few corners and saw the bridge ahead of us. But as we were passing by the Aquarium, I made everyone cross the street, so that we were on the southern side. This way, when we climbed onto the bridge, the Houses of Parliament stretched in front of us. But I turned away from their majesty, and, looking down the South Bank, I saw the hospital. Big Ben began to ring. I raised an eyebrow, but I kept on walking.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 17, Crossing Paths, Paragraph 1

Perhaps a glare from the lights of the console: I couldn't see them from where I was, but, perhaps, owing to Nike's hunched-over position (which he would only relax when he was looking down his nose, at which point, he was leaning back in his chair - but only briefly, as then he would lean forward again), with his body thus contracted, the lights from the console may have been reflecting off his face, concentrating under his brow - but, I suppose, it may have been a reflection from the dashboard, angled as it was towards the driver, or maybe a combination thereof - regardless, there was a distinct glare on his face, and, hollowing out his features, he looked like the devil's minion, or, at least, someone trapped in hell: either a weary traveler misled, or a duty-bound man who was chafing against the fiber of his will.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 2, Clauses 5-6

NIKE: Nowhere: not yet. I think I'm gonna go back to the Bois de Boulogne - I know I won't find her, but: I'll ask around: see if anyone remembers seeing her, knows hers, anything.

INDIE: Where did you pick her up?

NIKE: She was coming from the West; she was walking toward the Reine, but: I don't know whether she was coming or going - you know? She was in a big hurry. Was she trying to escape or what?

INDIE: ...

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 9, Respecting Another's Politics, Paragraphs 11-14

Finally, there's the soul, which we believe permeates both body and mind, and with which we associate what we call 'agape,' that unselfish loyalty or concern (the former based on common interest; the latter based on benevolence) which we direct toward God, to our fellow man, and, I daresay, even to the Devil. This good will (which only sometimes is complemented by common interest) has led us to seek equality and diversity in both national and domestic economies. It turns us into 'partners.'

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

I looked through the window. The shadow of trees-immense, floating, rustling things-terrified me. The feeling grew. It stretched towards me like a tube of darkness. It burst through the window. It skewered me. In vain, I grasped at the door. I was pulled into the middle of the seat.

The man smiled. "Di tin we de meik di pikcha? Luk." He nodded towards the side. Tatum turned her head. A small Manga person emerged from the shadows. A PDA was in its hand. Tatum looked back at the man crouching at her feet. She huffed contemptuously. She turned to take possession. The creature was gone.

Astrologers agreed. They predicted neither Sforza nor Braccio would long survive the other. When Sforza departed Ortona with his army and headed north toward the mouth of the Pescara River, the headwaters of which concealed Braccio, the astrologers warned against it. Even the men were frightened when a standard bearer tripped and tore their precious bandiera. Sforza was undeterred.

Luka smiled. "Hello!"

Clark and Shephard headed towards the store. They reached the door. They both grabbed the handle. It was real. They pulled. Nothing happened. They were pulling in opposite directions. Shephard tried to push Clark away. Clark refused to let go. He tried to push Shephard. They both fell to their knees. They tried pulling again. It was useless. It was too hard for them to cooperate. A customer had to open the door for them. Clark and Shephard crawled inside.

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

It was too late. Guests were back in the room. I picked up the keys I dropped. My breasts were filling out my dress like curd in cheesecloth. I rushed towards my sweater. Nike sat on its edge. I had to pull it out from underneath him. We exchanged the evil eye. Nike smiled.

When the Nautilus left orbit Orbitz shadowed it in the Argo. When the Nautilus turned off course and headed towards the tesseract the Argo turned too. It wasn't alone. On the opposite side of the Nautilus there was another Argo. It was may have been younger but it had the same shape. The same designation. The same frequency to its identification transmitter. The presence of the two identical ships seemed impossible. It confused the operators of the control station long enough to let all three ships pass into the tesseract. From that point on they couldn't be stopped. They passed through the singularity.

Orbitz turned towards the door to the corridor. A tinny woman's voice said, "Rishi."

Orbitz stopped. He said, "I told you not to use that fake voice."

"I'm sorry," said the voice. "Please come to the terminal."

Orbitz went back to the monitor. A message appeared. "I am not ill nor do I believe that the ship's computer is malfunctioning."

Indiana said, "Come here." Her hand was on my shoulder. I leaned towards her. She kissed me. She pressed her lips into mine. She ground them gently. I didn't do anything.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
