Underneath, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to consider the idea of enhancing his measly Fiction Corpus with a history of sports art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the possibility of administering English as a global standard. I don't believe in the pleasureless fashion in which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Refining a person's command of a language isn't like promoting a more valuable coin. A language - a common language - is not just an instrument that you can teach yourself to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A living tongue can't be dissociated from the professed knowledge of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching people to recite English is to deprive them of its cultural context. A capable teacher has to create a strategy for introducing it; the bravest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of various scope and consistency. This corpus might include anything from a book about literature to many truly brilliant literature stories. I burned many candles laboring on my "monstrous" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have assembled a million words and I have codified them, reformulating them - not just to teach American vocabulary but to defend the human spirit, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 4 Answers the Question, "Where?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. Wednesday, or Assembly Day, or Constitution Day respresents the "Where"

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Underneath

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word underneath in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word underneath, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word underneath is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Underneath in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

So we stopped at the warehouse where your father's uncle bought some clothes by the scale. He bought enough clothes to fill twenty trash bags. Throwing about five trash bags into the back seat, he was able to fit five more into the trunk. Getting into the car, we placed all the other trash bags between our legs, underneath them and on our laps, beside ourselves, behind our backs and our heads, on either side, piling them underneath our arms and above them, squeezing them into our crotches, filling the pits of our knees and arms, making stacks that came up to our noses and our asses. They were not comfortable. They were plastic bags. They were black: they absorbed the midday sun. They made us hot and sweaty. They stuck to our skin. These plastic trash bags full of clothing stuck to our skin. It was disgusting. They smelled. It was like being poached in oil with sweet and sour pepper. The clothes were spilling out. Somebody would wear this filthy shirt squeezing out of my crotch. It was disgusting. There were balls of nylon stocking squeezing themselves into my ass. When we turned into a back alley and stopped, I was grateful.

"Is this the store?" I asked.

Verses 175-176 from the chapter called Adolescence

Once upon a time, in fairy book land (that is, medieval Europe), there was a thing called common ground. This almost mythical farmland was controlled by individual farmers only during the growing and harvesting seasons. After that, until the next growing season, it was freely available for grazing and for other purposes. Land with a fence around it, or a hedge, was off limits - enclosed, so to speak. In those days, mankind ruled. Then came a time of change. A strange, new king came to rule in Britain. His name was Progress the First. His Queen was Greed; they named their son, Efficiency, the crown prince. They enclosed all the land in Britain. Other nations soon followed suit. By fiat, they encouraged the enclosure of land. Germany encouraged, then France and Denmark - even the Russian czar. But Poland was among the last: we clung to our old ways. We felt the common ground slipping from underneath our feet. Finally, we had to give way. Progress ruled.

Verse 146 from the chapter called Childhood

In the following minutes, your mother kept wiggling herself downward. At first, Jesus had no idea what was going on. (His left hand was cupping her breast.) Then he realized: she was pushing up her shirt. Her brassiere was gone, having been removed before going to bed. Jesus was perfectly free to place his cupping hand around her waist, and then, on the way back to where it just had been, to slip it ever so innocently underneath her shirt and to place it directly on her naked skin. He did that. Your mother was now breathing heavily.

Verse 633 from the chapter called Security

We stared at each other for a long time. Then I got up and ambled over to her side. She removed her mask from her mouth and looked up. Her mouth was open; it was only open a little bit - her lips, a centimeter apart, perhaps - but it seemed like her mouth was hanging open; her lower lip curled out; her lips were thick; in fact, her mouth was so big; her chin, so small; it was very strange; her lower set of teeth were pushed against her lip; one of them was wildly out of place, leaning forward, crazily, like the peasant warrior, but you could barely see it, since it hid underneath that huge lip. Her face was very funny. She looked oblivious, wide-eyed and naïve. It seemed as if she were totally forgetting herself. I laughed. I couldn't help myself: she was so amusing.

Verse 477 from the chapter called Bohemia

A man is not a rabbit, as my grandfather used to say (whenever he received farmer's cheese on his plate); it's hard to imagine, whatever level of intelligence the first hunter possessed, that, after having dodged left and right in a vain attempt at chase, he didn't decide just to sit there and wait for his prey to come wandering within range. Perhaps having climbed into a nearby kola tree, the first hunter waited patiently while chewing its dry fruit, satisfying his hunger pangs until some succulent piece of game, unaware of its new predator hiding in the branches, came wandering underneath and WOOSH! went the rock, or WHIZ! went the wooden spear, aided by gravity to come violently crashing (or piercing, as the case may have been) right between the shoulders.

Verse 2 from the chapter called Arms

Usage of Underneath in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

The subject of my latest vision - although I really should not call them visions: my experiences involve the entire sensual organ system. They are not limited to eyes or ears or the touch. They involve my entire organism, from the feeling of the ground underneath my feet, to the involuntary fancies of the mind's eyes.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

The breakdown was unexpected; and yet, early on I caught the flavor of discontent. Her opening monologue at the door was conspicuous in that regard. Instead of her usual exasperation, her usual barrage of complaint, that unsolicited effort to inform, that continuous concern for speaking, that vocal plying, that very pressing aural nightmare that continues even after you've woken up to its acoustical tyranny, lurking underneath her sometimes musical stream of input, hiding behind her perpetual disquiet, there was something else, something hushed, purposely muted, something that was quietly whispering its presence, something like panic.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 29, A Woman's Disposition, Paragraph 1, Clauses 5-8

ANDY: No: absolutely never. And that's why we should thank the Lord for putting the ground underneath our feet. If it weren't for the ground, we wouldn't be dancing around the sun. And gravity would send us all straight to hell.

OLYMP: ...

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 2, Discussing Heaven with a Child, Paragraphs 36-37

The surface of Thaïs is so brilliant, the tunes so seductive in every sense, that you can understand people not bothering to discover what lurks underneath. There is plenty there, not all of it comfortable in its dissection of the human condition, and that, combined with the opera's obvious and immediate attractions, accounts for its special fascination. Massenet's reputation sank to its lowest ebb after the Second World War' - blah, blah, blah - 'first complete recording' - blah, blah, blah. They don't say anything about the movies. Oh well.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 12, Opera, Paragraph 32, Clauses 10-15

And then it came: in the form of a sparkling bias dress reaching the knees, flapping open at the back - a diagonal path waiting to be closed. Indiana's hand reached behind for the zipper, and, grasping it above her hip, she began to zip slowly up the diagonal edge. I followed her beautiful hand. The last of the garter belt disappeared underneath it. The fabric began coating that wondrous plane, covering the noble erector, passing over the spine.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Davis found Junior with Nyota in front of a three-year-old colt. Trying not to look flushed, she listened to him explain the inner workings of the racing world. He was stroking the horse's mane. "This is the one I named, 'Clutch Bag,'" he said. "He's my best horse. I hope I can win with him at Belmont."

Nyota pointed to the lumps on the horse's barrel. "Do you see this? They are botflies coming out from underneath the skin. Until the wounds heal, you won't have any way of strapping on a girth."

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story set in New York

Shephard sped up. He got close to the truck. There was a tarp over its bed. He came alongside. He peeked underneath the canvas. There was something green. It was a watermelon. The truck was full of them. If he dumped them, thought Shephard, the humvee might crash. At the very least, it would slow it down.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring an intelligence agent

As the men crossed, one of his favorite pages, a boy named Mangone, was pushed by the current to high water. Instinctively, Sforza rode out to save him. His horse slipped. In an instant, underneath the weight of Sforza's heavy armor, the loins of his horse gave way. Both man and beast were delivered into the arms of the cold current.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story about a young man who tries to be manly

The poor devil, crouching at the water's edge, his back to the beach and the waves lapping at his balls, had no idea what hit him. The dog, doubtlessly overjoyed to be out of retirement for the day, hit the man with such force that a slender plastic bag full of green little herbs dislodged itself from underneath the sign on its back.

"Cannabis!" yelled Patsy, running to the scene of the crime. "Cannabis!" he yelled, flailing all five limbs.

AT RISE: KOKOMO is wiping up the floor.

KOKOMO: Clean. Clean. Clean. We are obsessed by cleaning. If space is a giant vacuum, why does all the dust settle here: underneath the table? Why not in the middle of the floor? Where I can see it? Where I can wipe it up with my feet? We know perfectly well why, don't we, Kokomo? Master Fletcher can't be bothered to take off his shoes. Thanks to him, it's: 'wipe the floor, Kokomo.' Yes, Ms. Jackson. 'Clean the kitchen, girl.' Yes, Ms. Jackson. 'When is lunch, dear?' I don't know, Ms. Jackson. Honestly, where does all this dust come from? What am I supposed to do with it? There really is no sense in cleaning more than once a month. Let the moon show when it's time to clean. Ms. Jackson certainly doesn't know. She would have me clean my way right into an early grave. Kokomo was not built for dust. She was built for love.

MS. JACKSON: (off) Kokomo!

KOKOMO: Yes, Ms. Jackson.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
