Within, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is meditating on the concept of enlarging his extensive Fiction Corpus with a coffee table book describing science fiction awards; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the concept of administering English as a universal language. I do challenge the altogether ordinary fashion in which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Beefing up one's familiarity with a language isn't like promoting a safer parachute. A language - a common language - isn't just a tool that you can learn to employ with a greater amount of precision. A living language can't be isolated from the philosophical currents of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A good teacher has to develop a plan for introducing it; the smartest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of writing of various size and consistency. They can contain everything from a book about literature to some real sci fi. I forged my "measly" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have framed a million words and I have evaluated them, reframing them - not just to teach a tongue but to reveal the human spirit, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Within

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word within in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word within, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word within is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Within in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"You've got to understand, Zoe. Here in Poland, we don't always have everything within arm's reach. Sometimes, we need to improvise."

Verse 587 from the chapter called Security

The order's Rule was modeled after the Benedictine and was cowritten by Jesus and the Pope, who took a very serious personal interest. The Cosmonauts were divided into four classes: two ranks of combatants - knights and sergeants, who were necessarily members of the Brigade - and two ranks of non-combatants - chaplains, who were consecrated priests, and servants, who were either tenants in charge of management or nurses in charge of health care. Requirements for admission to these ranks were stipulated by the Rule, and, though initially the Pope was allowed to choose, albeit it with Jesus's approval, the number and identity of the chaplains, afterwards, on Mars, only the Grand Master would need decide. Jesus was allowed to choose his own servants and sergeants but candidates for the knighthood would have to be approved by the chaplains. Vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience only had to be permanent for chaplains and knights. Everyone else could take temporary vows if he or she so desired. The vow of chastity, as it pertained to non-clerics, did not include celibacy but allowed for marriage within the order.

Verse 89 from the chapter called Vows

In Poland, in those days, rich people never lived very far away. The middle class was not isolated. Poor people were not abandoned. Everybody lived within arm's reach, or, at most, an hour's walk. Villages were close to the town; towns, close to the city. There was communication. People were aware of other people's problems. They didn't care, perhaps, but at least they knew. Rich men could recognize the poor: they had faces. If one of their fancy windows was shattered, they were angry - of course - but at least they understood. They felt the frustration.

Verse 344 from the chapter called Adolescence

The former U.S. Army colonel, as commander of an independent army unit within the Autonomous Mars-bound Outer-space Cooperative (AMOC), which, upon wresting control of the Martian orbit from Revolutionary (or whoever's) hands, would then organize the invasion of Mars, which, from the surface, would thence be controlled by LARC (Landed Anti-Revolutionary Command), was granted by Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third, chairman of AMOC's central planning committee, a permanent and veto-wielding seat in the Presidium, the war council of indeterminate size which, on the Martian surface, would exercise control over LARC, and which, with the LARC Secretariat, would form the backbone of it administration. Anyone in command of an independent army unit was eligible for a voting seat. Whether that seat were permanent or veto-wielding was symbolically dependent on the size of the army unit in question, but, in reality, the decision was entirely in the hands of Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third, who installed himself as Presidium chairman.

Verse 215 from the chapter called Security

The destruction was awesome. The U.S. Space Marines punched a hole through the main defenses; another group made a feint. Meanwhile, armored ships outflanked the pirates from their weakest point. They were encircled. Within days, the great armed forces of Sadatmo ceased to exist. Many surrendered; others ran away. The coalition held back. The great tyrant escaped into the blackness of outer space.

Usage of Within in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

So the industry makes a big deal out of its own accomplishments. That's why, if you're not a rose-grower you don't really hear about the Rose Selections. It's a niche market, which means that there's a steady audience, that certain people will always be buying roses: why should the judges be worried about what's going to be popular?" I told Macy that simplicity is a virtue, and if the Rose Selectors wish to commend a grower for developing an easy flower to grow, then it lies entirely within their prerogative. Nike agreed, pointing out that the Rose Selectors were judging roses, "not rose growers. If they were doing that, then maybe they'd give the award to someone who could successfully grow a difficult rose." Macy agreed that it was entirely natural for the judges to compliment a rose that was easy to grow. "But that's not my point. My point is: why isn't there a prize for rose growers? That kind of prize would reward merit, it would raise public awareness of these talented people and their art form, but it wouldn't serve the economy and therefore it would never be subjected to its forces." Nike stopped to consider this, but I already knew that Macy was mistaken. Not only was he being idealistic, he was being plain wrong. I asked him why he'd want to divorce prize-giving from the promotion of goods. What good would that serve? "It would serve the ideal," he replied; "it would preserve the purity of the prize itself." I turned away from him and stared in front of me. I told him he was being foolish; he was defining a prize as something periodically given by an institution to members of a select community. I told him to consider a prize given daily from one person to another; I told him to consider marriage. "Love," I said, "is a gift freely given, but marriage is a prize for which people apply, for which some qualify and some do not. Whoever be the judge, the prize is awarded on the basis of merit, and the banns of marriage proclaim the lucky victors. Do you think you can divorce marriage from its promotion of life? How fruitful is the marriage without children? Tell me honestly, is your ideal marriage incapable of producing children?" I did not turn to face him; instead, I got up and went for a drink.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 9, Attacking homosexuality, Paragraph 1, Clauses 15-33

As he slowed his car to a stop, he removed a single cigarette from its package (a decision he would later regret) and, placing it between his lips, he exited his vehicle. Nike began smoking and pacing alongside his car. Meanwhile, the gendarmes were taking their time. From within their patrol car, they shot occasional glances at Nike, who began raising his brow. He was getting impatient. "At least the car's clean," he thought, having removed all incriminating evidence while cleaning it that morning. So Nike was unworried, but he was getting even more impatient. He was thinking about that beautiful woman. Who could she have been? he thought. Who could she have been? Then the police approached.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 3, Dealing With Arrest, Paragraph 1

And so, with my hand on his, I laughed. Letting go of his hand, I circled past his still rigid body, noticing the curls of a smile now forming as I, still laughing, began my way down the hall. Within a few steps his laugh was stronger than mine, and I half-turned to see his glowing face and to say, "Sorry, I mistook you for someone else," which made us both redouble our laughing effort. Turning again, I felt him stay by the corner for a while, and I was half-way down the hall before I had the courage to turn around, see him gone, and retrace my steps back to Luke's room. I felt very good.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 3, Ambushing a Man, Paragraph 2, Clauses 7-12

Within moments, Nike was being led away from his car. Welcoming his captors to search it, he mentioned with delightful scorn that he had just cleaned it himself and that whosoever might enter should wipe the mud off his peau de porc shoes first. Nike was then comfortably placed in the backseat, and, by the time he was driven away towards the police station, he was already guessing what had happened. It was incredible to say the least (and Nike could hardly believe it), but there was really only one way that any of this could've happened. And he was going to make such a mess of Luka's face, he had to laugh out loud.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 3, Dealing With Arrest, Paragraph 38

Only one person had to be there: Jean-Christian. He was the only one asking questions, and he was trying to be as professional as possible - that is to say, he was trying to be stern. But Nike was now as full of spirit, anger, violent adoration, pain, and justice as the most honest of crusaders, and Christian had no way of holding him back. Only the sheets of his bed could restrain him - that, and the brutal reality of Nike's condition: that any movement of his lower body caused him extraordinary pain. Even Rothko was afraid of getting within reach of those arms, which now were lashing out in sudden bursts of energy: they would fly out, then gesticulate: and they were pointing, hammering, slashing no matter who was talking.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 8, Being a Victim, Paragraph 2

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Within days, he was robbed of the little food he had brought with him. Stealing eggs and grapes along the way, he made it to the port of Bari and found work on the docks. Not finding his crusty, Venetian employer very agreeable, especially after breaking some porcelain, he stole a bag of old hyperpryons and headed toward Naples. Though the Byzantine coins would not be easily recognized in the countryside, Ferrari was confident he could sell them to a banker for at least a few ducats.

To the west, the forest was not half as thick. Within minutes, Barbara was on the edge of a long stretch of lawn. Moonlight colored everything an eerie shade of grey. In the distance, the pastel walls of the Château de Bagatelle gleamed. It was hopelessly far away. It didn't matter. Barbara ran.

Luka reached the edge. He was not a slim man. It took him a few moments to catch up. He grabbed Barbara's cloak. He pulled her back. He wrapped himself around her. He clamped her mouth shut.

Usage of Within in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Orbitz arrived at the Houston space elevator. He took no bags through customs. Nobody questioned him. At the orbiting platform he bought a fancy skin suit. He chartered a shuttle to take him to his ship. Within an hour he saw the widowmaker stretching out towards the galactic pole. Forestays came into view. They glittered from the main mast in quick succesion like spectral strands. Stone tentacles emerged. From every direction they clustered into the humongous figurehead of the Nautilus Pompilius. Its one brooding eye kept careful watch above its gaping hyponome. Orbitz pulled the hood of his skin suit over his head. He affixed his breathing apparatus. He disembarked directly into space. With a single canister of propellant he reached the airlock nearest to the bridge. He climbed aboard.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written in honor of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Matt looked up from his bag. Without saying a word he stretched out his arm and shut the dresser. He went back to packing. I took note of the fact that the single condom still lay within easy reach. Just in case.

– from “A Magnum Condom,” a bedtime story to teach children about real life that may or may not work

The case against Captain Orbitz stymied. The investigation plodded on. It was discovered that Orbitz had recently purchased a ship, the Nautilus. It was capable of inter-brane travel. He was seen in private conversation with an enginner from a planet abandoned by the Alliance to marauding Scutus forces. He was in constant contact with the lieutenant in charge of operating the prototype for an automated combat system. All of it curious. None of it meaningful. When the funding for the combat system was discontinued as part of a swath of spending cuts it generated the usual bitterness and threats among the interested parties. Among them turned out to be Orbitz. Within one microarcsecond of the announcement he tendered his resignation. It was an outrage. He was the poster child of the military. If he didn't want to be a courier anymore he could have a desk job. He could be a liaison. Or a recruiter. He didn't have to quit. According to Orbitz he could no longer serve a government that didn't safeguard its own citizens. As far as the Admiralty could tell he was referring to some outlying garbage planet. It was obscene.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written in honor of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Inside the singularity the four-dimensional tesseract squeezed into the two-dimensional space of the interbrane world. All three ships survived the implosion. In the three-dimensional bubble lelt behind time passed slowly relative to the rest of the universe. Within half an hour their velocity reversed. They swung back towards the brane they had just left. After a small change in heading to the left, a roll to the right and a small adjustment in pitch downward all three ships emerged into the Trapezium cluster. The gas giant loomed nearby. As soon as the Argo was clear of the tesseract Orbitz programmed his ship to land on the surface of the planet. Orbitz Número Dos was going to need it.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The general continued. "Reports of our agents in the Perseus arm confirm the possibility that forces of Scutum-Centaurus are assembling within the shadow of the galactic core. Their presumed intention is to make further raids into the open clusters that border the near end of the bar. Rumors of a so-called hypersphere capable of transporting infinite mass via the brane strings are just that. Rumors. The Orion Star Alliance has concluded that Scutum is not planning further incursions into our territory. Nevertheless the military is on high alert. Dark matter mining will continue to increase. All projects confirmed within the last two galactic arc-seconds will be subject to review and possible suspension. That is all."

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
