Least, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's deliberating on the thought of complementing his solid Fiction Corpus with more elaborate fictions; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the practicality of enacting English as humanity's second language. I do doubt the debilitating methodology by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Enhancing one's intimacy with a language isn't like producing a more sonorous flute. A language - a living language - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A common tongue can not be divorced from the shared logic of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to rob her of its cultural context. A good educator must find a way to introduce it; the perceptive pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language based on a specific corpus, a body of written language of various scope and consistency. A corpus might contain everything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of fiction book titles. I suffered many a sleepless night laboring on my "monstrous" Fiction Corpus in order to form a special class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have sculpted a million words and I have anatomized them, reformulating them - not just to teach a language but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to prod that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 8 Answers the Question, "Which?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. You can remember that the last type of word answers the question "Which?" by asking yourself which day is the most important day of the week. The answer is Sunday, or Victory Day, which is a day for everyone to celebrate the art of being human.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

In June of 2011 I arrived in Europe for what I hoped would be a great adventure; my only concrete plan, to visit Croatia. By September I had driven 6,000 miles and visited 12 different countries, all with a woman I met on the first Friday of my trip.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Least

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word least in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word least, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word least is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Least in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

In Poland, in those days, rich people never lived very far away. The middle class was not isolated. Poor people were not abandoned. Everybody lived within arm's reach, or, at most, an hour's walk. Villages were close to the town; towns, close to the city. There was communication. People were aware of other people's problems. They didn't care, perhaps, but at least they knew. Rich men could recognize the poor: they had faces. If one of their fancy windows was shattered, they were angry - of course - but at least they understood. They felt the frustration.

Verse 344 from the chapter called Adolescence

Simply put, at the time, I had no idea what I was doing or where it would lead. I was not in control, despite exhibiting extraordinary amounts of it - which may have been what allured that strange creature to me in the first place. It was a desperate creature I faced: a creature deprived of something I couldn't understand: deprived of self: lacking self. It was lost under a cloud of something unknowable: a fog of unhappy sunshine pollution: photochemical smog. It was confusion personified. It was infancy: unripe and unwilling to ripen - needy and restive - ungrateful, unapologetic, and unlearned - demanding - fascinating - irresistible - not yet a woman, it was a woman - it wanted to be a woman - it wanted to be a mother - it was unfit for motherhood - it deserved it, avoided it, wanted it, rejected it - it was a human being - it embraced it - it was everything at once - too much and too little - it lacked a little prudence to be honest, but, as the product of a genius Creator God, it was a work of art - mysterious when penetrated. It was not a simple woman, to the say the least.

Verse 440 from the chapter called Bohemia

Clouds brought fire to man. That cold breath of wet air that separates the positive away from the negative by lifting the positive up into the higher regions and leaving the rest alone, clumped together and shivering, decided to leave at the very bottom of the clouds a small blanketlike layer of the positive, which, for a while, protected Earth from the negative's wrath, but which was quickly devoured by that great mass and, giving way, permitted a fiery discharge of negative currents to come crashing down toward the Earth, summoning up, by methods I fail to understand, an opposing discharge from the point that otherwise would have been struck, which, as I've been told, met the fiery discharge approximately fifty meters above the ground and caused a great luminosity to flash and propagate itself back toward the clouds, reaching speeds near one-tenth the speed of light and temperatures around thirty-thousand Kelvin which heated the air and sent a massive shock wave expanding at supersonic speeds in either direction for about a meter before decaying into a sound wave, a massive clap, that rang in the ears of the first upright man to hear it, who saw the Light, who knew it to be God, or at least someone or something who was very angry - at him, perhaps, which made his whole hairy body stand on end and which scared the living bejesus out of him.

Verse 1 from the chapter called Security

"Don't be offended," he said. "It's supposed to be a way of thinking about it. If you consider it, you'll see what I mean. I'm not trying to hurt you, Zoe. I'm trying to help you. This could be a very effective tool against your feelings. How can you expect to conquer this disease if you keep antagonizing everything and everyone that tries to help? You need to try everything. Obviously, whatever it is you've been doing hasn't been working. I'm trying to give you a new way. This is it. At least, I think it could be a very effective way of approaching the problem. I thought you'd understand."

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

At the time, it was merely for the sake of peace - or so it seemed. As far as I could tell, the weary Albert was casually withdrawing from the field of battle, so to speak. I assumed his intention was to return and make peace - at least, after the dust had settled. But, of course, I did not care to know all the details - at least, not enough to broach the subject.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 4, The Fourth Day, Part 2, The Assembly & Government Reform, Section 6, Being Obedient, Paragraph 1

Rothko, getting impatient, said he was sorry and proposed a stakeout. Nike was keen on walking around and searching, but smoking opium was also appealing. Considering that they could be guarding at least one exit, he agreed to return to the car. Luckily, Luka had not been apprehended.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraph 3

NIKE: It doesn't matter: I'll be making my own product. I have no idea what it takes to make a lace thong, but I know it takes around six weeks to brew a good mead. And the thing is: I can make my stuff in bulk - at least the standard flavors; the made-to-order stuff will have to be done separately, of course.

ANDY: I can order whatever kind of mead I want?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 15, Dealing with Grand Schemes, Paragraphs 10-11

You took great pains to make that moment sound entirely accidental, but your insistence was very suspicious. You claim that you did not consciously initiate the look, but I am not convinced that you did not in some way anticipate it. The movement of your head and the meeting of your eyes that allowed you to share this look may have been reflex actions, but the words that preceded those actions, at least in my opinion, sound far too suggestive to have crossed your mind without the slightest warning of their potential meaning. As far as I'm concerned, there is only so much spontaneity in a thought process that allows you to combine such words in the appropriate syntax; there is too much preparation involved in delivering such a sentence, too much control required to articulate those words calmly in a quiet tenor.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 4, Doubting a Man's Intentions, Paragraph 2

Nike was shocked. He was appalled. Police officers, despite being the worst kind of swine, should hold themselves with at least a little bit of respect, especially when they're idly standing along the Queensway of all vices. Nike was so ashamed he sat down near the bushes. Things were not going well. No one wanted to answer his questions unless he were going to negotiate business. Nike was not that foolhardy - at least, not yet: the pain was too much. But, because of it, he had to walk around like a grown man with rickets. Even the fat girls were laughing at him. Even the ugly girls, the cut girls, the destroyed and overly diseased girls were laughing at him. He was humiliated.

Usage of Least in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The giant hill of stupidity was located five miles south of downtown East Farmville. Making it 5.1 miles from the new East Farmville post office. It was created under the local dictatorship of postmaster Steve the Second. Nobody blamed him personally for it. At least not in front of his face. Not that everybody lost on the deal. Just the rural carriers as usual.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story that represents the real lives of certain people, though the details are fictional

I was taken to a football game. Not at a stadium. More like a field with a stand. My uncle called it "The Moldavian Wembley." This is where my stomach caught up with me. At some point during the first half I rushed out to find a toilet. The only permament structure I found had a long line sticking out of it. The portable toilets were crowded. I decided to find something further afield. At the very least a bush.

– from “The Most Idiotic Actress,” a fictional story based on true events as related to the author

The people are the ones who set me free. I don't care how you twist it. I didn't stir people up. My father didn't stir people up. He explained to them what happened. I did what I had to do. I wasn't about to be punished for something people just didn't understand. People didn't want to understand what happened. They've got more important things to worry about. But at least they listened. My father told them not to take his last child and they had mercy. For him. Not for me. They would've killed me.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on good intentions coming straight out of Roman mythology

Some not so unattractive female cousins of mine took me to see a movie. I got excited when I got to the theatre. Instead of popcorn and soda the bar was selling pickled peppers and beer. They even had cocktails. The movie was less suprising. It was an American comedy that was released in the States at least a year and a half earlier. I was glad there was no dubbing. Just subtitles. Until I started watching and I realized I was laughing at the jokes a full five seconds before anybody else. If at all. I was supremely embarrassed once again. Until the cocktails kicked in.

– from “The Most Idiotic Actress,” a fictional story based on real life as related to the author

A finger up the bum was Steve O's favorite cure for a headache. It wasn't always like that. He used to enjoy digging his thumbs into the tops of his eyeballs. At least in the morning. By the afternoon it was all about the booze. A half bottle of wine did the trick. By night it was a decent wank. If he was sober.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
