Many, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to debate the potential of enlarging his impressive Fiction Corpus with a history of the art fair; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the concept of administering English as a worldwide language. I don't accept the unrewarding routine with which English is presented for study.Pointer

Beefing up a person's deftness for a language isn't like pioneering a more incorruptible banknote. A language - a spoken language - is not merely a tool that you can teach yourself to wield with greater amounts of precision. A common language can't be divided from the competing values of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A worthy teacher has to find a method of introducing it; the insightful pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written language of various size and consistency. Such a corpus can include everything from a book about literature to some really short christmas stories. I burned many candles developing my "massive" Fiction Corpus in order to form a distinct genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have categorized them, reshaping them - not merely to teach an American language but to reveal the human soul, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 8 Answers the Question, "Which?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. You can remember that the last type of word answers the question "Which?" by asking yourself which day is the most important day of the week. The answer is Sunday, or Victory Day, which is a day for everyone to celebrate the art of being human.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

My plane touched down in Poland on June 20th. A month later I was in Austria. Two days later, Slovenia. The next day, Croatia. A week later, Italy. The next day, Switzerland. The next day, France. The next day, Germany. The next day, Belgium. The next day, Holland. All with a woman I had met my first weekend on the Continent.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Many

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word many in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word many, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word many is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Many in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Terrorism was also big. The very same year that Jesus's mother died, some crazy American blew up a U.S. government space station, killing one hundred and sixty-nine people. Two years earlier, some crazy pirate tried to blow up the Interplanetary Trade Center. Six people died; a thousand more were injured. He claimed his intention was to kill as many as two hundred and fifty thousand Americans by dislodging one of the two great modules that - back in those days - made up the bulk of the orbiting Center. Four years later, the U.S. government claimed that it was A-ron workers that had organized a bomb attack on one of their military bases in outer space the previous year, which had killed a total of nineteen soldiers, wounding more than five hundred.

Verse 310 from the chapter called Adolescence

The destruction was awesome. The U.S. Space Marines punched a hole through the main defenses; another group made a feint. Meanwhile, armored ships outflanked the pirates from their weakest point. They were encircled. Within days, the great armed forces of Sadatmo ceased to exist. Many surrendered; others ran away. The coalition held back. The great tyrant escaped into the blackness of outer space.

Verse 127 from the chapter called Childhood

"How many was in there when you had the most?" asked Lucius.

Verse 519 from the chapter called Adolescence

He was afraid of God; he feared that God might abandon him halfway through to wherever he was going. God was capable of crushing His servant, whether God came in the form of an angry terrorist or in the form of poisoned ketchup - the ways were endless; the source, only one: Jesus knew he was in the hands of God, Whose potential capriciousness was always a threat. Jesus trusted Him though - at least for the time being. The greatness to which Jesus seemed to be hurtling was of use to God - why else would He put His servant through such trials? There was a reason. Jesus didn't think God desired anything but Man's love. That would be difficult: Man was like a proud woman: not one who is quick to admit her faults. God's plan, whatever it be, would have to be complicated - ingenious, no doubt, but constantly frustrated by Man's will. Like so many great warriors before him, your father had to remind himself not to place God on his side, but to place himself on God's. Jesus's will was allied. Whatever God's plan be, Jesus was glad to be of service. However, as soon as Jesus's actions began influencing world events to a significant extent, Jesus began to wonder: is this it? Is this the extent of God's purpose for me? Is this where my biography shall end?

Verse 5 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Many in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

In their former state, my recent memories were indistinguishable from those of many years ago. But now, their form and shape has taken on so many abnormal characteristics: for instance, things are much larger now, as if they were blown up - and I can tell since the size of my consciousness has stayed the same.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 4, Self-image, Paragraph 1, Clauses 4-6

Great sinew that grips the crest of the pelvic girdle - at the threshold of ilium - whence many great muscles start their journey, such as gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, his three vasti (lateralis, medialis and intermedius): four great ships whose massive hulls you, sartorius, have the privilege of escorting down man's thigh (cuddling them, wrapping yourself over and across them) until you fall spiraling down the inner side, inserting yourself at the tibia, that shimmering place behind which the robust and shapely gastrocnemius makes his dwelling: the great propellant, whom the ancients framed with gleaming buskins, which, connecting with the humble soleus, comes down to the very heel of man: that splendiferous tuberosity! that beneficial growth which takes the weight of our standing, which balances our otherwise feeble attempts at uprightness.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 22, Encountering Poverty, Paragraph 55

And we did kiss, twice, before I was fully aware of what was happening, before I was able to push him away, and sneer at his poor judgment. Do not think that I was preparing to punish him; in fact, I was overwhelmed with pity. You must understand that I still loved him, but that this love had suffered much, and could not necessarily translate into physical desire. I went on to say many terrible things that night, but if I be innocent, it is only because I said those things out of brutal honesty, which is exactly what my old friend Macy lacked.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

"My liaison with the Manga People, a certain Captain Hoopz, claims somebody, perhaps this so-called Admiral Flava Flav, is running an extortion racket. If this story were to break, the Hentai Manga League would face investigations. Our more zealous legislators would try to tamper with the leadership. The Federation would threaten to suspend the all-lunar series. The extent of the possible damage is vast. Imagine how many fewer customers your prostitutes would have."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story set in a future where people are still marginalized

Morimoto arranged a hiring campaign looking for everything from window washers to security guards. Yokohama having a large Chinese population, Patsy felt it was a good place for his suspect to hide. Many applied. Unfortunately, the tenants did their own hiring.

Gog sympathized with them. If the armies of Rusas were helpless against Sargon, what chance did he have? He allowed his chiefs to decide their own fates. Many chose, despite their qualms, to continue.

They marched southeast. They skirted the kingdom of Rusas. In the hills, they encountered a people named the Hayk. Their speech was almost intelligible. They said their king was named Bagadatti.

Sartorius led the way, twisting around the quadriceps, gripping the crest of the pelvic girdle, whence many muscles start their path-like gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, the three vasti: lateralis, medialis, intermedius-great ships whose massive hulls sartorius escorts down man's thigh-cuddling, wrapping himself over and around them-until he falls spiraling down the inner side, inserting himself at the tibia, the shimmering place behind which robust and shapely gastrocnemius makes his dwelling: the propeller, whom the ancients framed with gleaming buskins.

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: 'You don't float around staring off into space? You don't flinch when I reach out my hand? You are a fish. You're a catfish. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to tease you. I'm serious. I want to know what's wrong. Are you sick?'

ALICE: 'No.'

FLETCHER: 'You certainly don't seem healthy. I'm going to Father. Maybe he knows what's wrong with you.'

ALICE: 'Fait, Toc. I fay tay you.'

FLETCHER: Toc is my name, by the way; they're my initials. Father is John Jackson, the last of the mutineers - not our real father. 'Alright: speak.'

ALICE: 'Many year aro when you were ritter, te women try to escape in a poat fur of hor. Te men say tat tey fix it, put tey not fix it. Tey laugh when I catch te crap ant ah te women fa in te vater.'

FLETCHER: 'I know this story. Susannah, you're no stranger to water. Don't tell me you're afraid that I would put holes in my canoe and make you fall in.'

ALICE: 'After tis, ah te women talk apout is kirrin' te men. Ant two of tem try.'

FLETCHER: 'You're not saying that you might actually kill me if I humiliated you?'

ALICE: 'I tey you, Toc. You ask me; I tey you.'

– ACT II, lines 81-90

LUKE: No kidding.

FLETCHER: She's made forty-seven thousand dollars.

LUKE: Already?

FLETCHER: It's been quite some time. She left Fiji a few years back because of a bad situation. She's still trying to reach her mark. Much to my mother's consternation, neither charity nor her wages count towards her commitment. She hasn't been seeing many clients recently. I assume she's waiting for that special somebody who's prepared to put her out of business. Unfortunately, few people are willing to pay three thousand dollars for sex.

LUKE: She wouldn't do it for less, would she?

FLETCHER: It's not a profession to her anymore; it's a punishment: a debt of honor for losing her child.

LUKE: You can't bargain with that.

FLETCHER: You could be the last one. You could put an end to this misery. She deserves somebody who can appreciate what he's doing.

LUKE: Three thousand dollars is a lot of money.

FLETCHER: The peace of mind it brings is priceless.

– ACT I, lines 771-780

FLETCHER: It was tough. They didn't have many farming tools. In fact, all they had was a broken shovel. They did have some hammers and some crowbars. They used that to bore a hole through a rock. They put their gunpowder inside and blasted themselves a cistern. They were lucky that the ship's armorer was part of their crew. He could use the ship's bellows and the anvil to make new tools. Unfortunately, soon after they got there, his Tahitian consort fell from a cliff and died - apparently while she was gathering birds' eggs. It didn't take long before he was threatening to leave unless they allowed him to take one of the Tahitian men's wives. Nobody was very happy about that, but he was the blacksmith. They couldn't afford to lose him.

– ACT I, line 612

MS. JACKSON: What about my heirloom?

GREY GOOSE: What heirloom?

MS. JACKSON: The one you stole.

GREY GOOSE: I didn't steal anything.

MS. JACKSON: Don't lie to me.

GREY GOOSE: I didn't.

LESBIAN: I did. I packed it away in my bag. I have two tickets for tonight's flight: one for me and one for you. Come. We'll explore the world as your ancestors did: the English and the Polynesians. They went from west to east; we'll go from east to west. We'll show the lost and the lovelorn what true devotion means. We'll scale Victory Peak in China. We'll sail the Punjab. We'll get lost in Gargas Cave. We'll bathe in the hot springs beneath Mount Hekla. We'll catch a Broadway show. We'll do some shopping at Shinjuku Station. We'll do anything your heart desires. All you have to do is liberate yourself. Let your passions run free. Someday we'll return to your native land. It won't ever be the same again. Nevermore will you be shamed. Woman, you'll have made the entire world yours.

MS. JACKSON: Nameless Pain! How am I to deny a penitent husband - newly birthed in remorse, in truth, in love, and desirous of similar gifts from me, his lawfully wedded wife, who, for so long, and with so many tears, kept watch over this heretofore seemingly endless and vain gestation - yet relish this sudden appearance of life: this infant curiosity: this foundling whose love demands more than my adoption could ever give? Oh, Homo: a thousand hearts couldn't beat as strongly as you have made mine beat. This is my home. I can no sooner leave it than change my body for that of a man. The world is yours; go out there and take it. Please leave me in peace. I beg you.

LESBIAN: I'll go. Though it pains me more than female circumcision, I'll go. I'll go because I love you.

– ACT II, lines 357-365

ALICE: Where is she?

KOKOMO: In what seems like paradise: Western Samoa.

ALICE: I thought you liked it here.

KOKOMO: I do. I can't help being homesick. Norfolk is small. Between the locals and the tourists, I think I've had enough.

ALICE: I understand.

KOKOMO: There aren't so many tourists back home. The islands are big. Half the land is forest.

ALICE: It sounds nice.

KOKOMO: It's a mixed blessing. Few tourists means fewer crowds but also less money.

ALICE: Do a lot of Samoans emigrate?

KOKOMO: They do. It's different for me. I'm half European. My father's from Vladivostok.

Usage of Many in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

One day the ogre took Grendel to the mountains. He introduced her to a witch. The witch asked Grendel if she liked toys. Grendel said yes. The witch told her if she went with her she could have many toys.

– from “Little Grendel's First Hair,” a fairy tale story about things we don't like to think about that unfortunately exist in real life

One day the hair was gone. It was replaced by two hairs. Then three. Before long there were too many hairs to count. Grendel went to her grandmother but her grandmother was dead. The man at the funeral said something about the Chinook. Grendel was sure she would be next.

"You're from Transylvania."

"Close. Szatmárnémeti."

"As in, the Treaty of Szatmar?"

"I don't know. I guess."

"It's not important."

"Are you a historian?"

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may help overcome one's sense of unease depending on your outlook

The Education Ministry was offering me a job. It was a teaching position at a village school. It was the only school for a large area. Children from many villages went there. Only one teacher taught there and he had literally drunk himself to death a week before. The Ministry was in a hurry to fill the position. Absolutely nobody was interested. I only had one question. I asked if the village was far from Moscow. The man behind the desk nodded his head. I accepted.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that represents what certain people have gone through, though the details are fictional

A black man in Moscow is not unheard of. There used be many of us. There were four of us in my neighborhood. Obama and Barack lived together in the gray block to the north. Khalifa lived down the street from me. We didn't necessarily like each other but we were all in the same boat. We had each come from the same poor country. We each had been invited to study in Russia. Back then, almost twenty years ago, we considered ourselves lucky. We were willing to go through any hell to see it through.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
