Neither, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's ruminating on the viability of amplifying his sizable Fiction Corpus with a biography of fiction authors; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the soundness of legislating English as a universal language. I don't think highly of the unexciting strategy by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Upgrading a person's mastery of a language isn't like developing a stronger crankshaft. A language - a spoken language - isn't just an instrument that you can learn to employ with greater amounts of precision. A language cannot be cleaved from the prevailing culture of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make pupils recite English is to cheat them out of its cultural context. A worthy instructor must develop a technique for introducing it; the wisest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of written works of varying size and consistency. This corpus can include anything from a book about literature to many real-life stories of love. I burnt many candles creating my "wonderful" Fiction Corpus to form a specific genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have assembled a million words and I have categorized them, reframing them - not simply to teach the English language but to defend the human soul, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 8 Answers the Question, "Which?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. You can remember that the last type of word answers the question "Which?" by asking yourself which day is the most important day of the week. The answer is Sunday, or Victory Day, which is a day for everyone to celebrate the art of being human.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

By the end of my first week in Europe in 2011, I had bought a car and out of the blue had met the woman who would join me on a 6,000 mile trek across the European continent, sharing the beat-up car that I had bought and the one small tent from Walmart that I had brought along with me on my flight.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Neither

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word neither in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word neither, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word neither is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Neither in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

If your father had known that, he might have had his lieutenants wait: they were his only family, and, despite their self-respect, they were definitely not Capitalists - but neither was your father, for that matter - or at least, he didn't feel like one. In real terms, he was very much a Capitalist, a recent Capitalist; but no matter how recent one's fortune, if there was a fortune, there was a Capitalist. New Capitalists were not made all the time - in fact, for the established Capitalist, the only thing more exciting than new capital was a new Capitalist. You never knew what to expect. He or she might destroy you; he or she might make you very rich: he or she might make you a Supercapitalist. Then you would thank him or her. But if he or she destroyed you, then you might just commit murder. And the penalty for killing a Capitalist was death. The penalty for killing a Supercapitalist was bankruptcy and death. It was known to happen quite often, even among Capitalists.

Verse 21 from the chapter called Childhood

The girl was right: your father was the most convenient. He accepted that, with every tool of logic in his brain. It was comforting to know that the most shameful part of it was hidden: no one was going to find out - she wouldn't tell (to protect herself) and neither would he - it was their secret: their little bedtime secret. Nobody would ever know that your father had been fucked by a girl.

Verse 231 from the chapter called Childhood

"Neither can I," said the clerk. "Don't come back here," he said. "Just wait. I'll call."

Verse 291 from the chapter called Vows

"After Andrew's father died, his uncle adopted him. He sent him to college; he was good to him. But when he fell in love with a German girl, neither the Commandant nor his wife would let him marry. Andrew said, 'If I can't marry her, then I'm not going to marry anyone' - so it's been for all these years. I told him to reconsider, but, nowadays, what woman wants to be a farmer's wife? Especially for a dirty, two-bit farmer like him: with five teeth!

Verse 266 from the chapter called Adolescence

Jesus had no idea what kind of consequences this failure effected. His uncle hanged himself around that time, but there was no way of knowing how that were related - or whether it were only meant to look like a suicide. Jesus had his aunt moved to a safe location, and, as far as he knew, neither she nor her children were ever harmed. Jesus had no way of knowing whom or how many the Krupnik had informed about his identity, or, more importantly, his resources, which, considering the amount of duffel bags recovered from the basement, were, on the one hand, almost inexhaustible, but, considering the small size of his uncle's back room, were, on the other hand, quite meager - especially since Jesus was trying to conduct a private war.

MÉL: Yeah, that's right - at least, not when they come for me.

MÉL: Me? No. Would you like me to?

NIKE: Maybe.

MÉL: Well, I don't have one.

NIKE: Neither do I. Do you know anyone who does?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 11, The Importance of Knowing Someone's Name, Paragraphs 11-18

I was busy fixating on the dealer's expressions. I thought it was funny that he should be strolling by, that Brian should turn out to be a friend of his (whatever that meant), and, above all, that he should meet us while we were all so high on weed - the great irony was that he sold us opium, but the most amazing thing was (at least to my intoxicated mind): he was wearing the most incredibly tolerant expression I had ever seen. It was the kind of expression I don't think I ever expected to see - especially from a man like that: I would've expected amusement or maybe boredom, signs of being bothered or else no expression at all. But he was by no means looking amused, and neither was he frowning. He didn't look bothered in any way and neither was he excited. His expression wasn't plain either - because he didn't look expressionless: he had a very distinct expression. It was expressing tolerance.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 6, Doing Business, Paragraph 3

Macy said bananas, Nike said peaches, Luke said both and I said neither. The peaches won. "Well I'm not surprised," said Nike, "after all, peaches come from a better family." I asked him what he meant and he lifted his arm and cocked his head poetically: "The Rose Family." Everyone laughed, and, the tension marvelously diffused, it was time to change places, get drinks, and move on to other topics.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 8, Partying with Intellectuals, Paragraph 6

One was an actress; the other, an actor. Perched atop their corner, their vigilance having lapsed into conversation, neither of them saw me coming; I had to look up and shout from directly below them: "how is London treating you, Macy?" which surprised him and excited him so much he would've walked right off the pedestal if Christie hadn't held him back at the last moment. With a little trouble, he came down from his pedestal and we greeted each other as friends, not having time for much else, because Christie was in a hurry to get us down the street.

NIKE: Yes: they were very good tyrants. Each was ruthless in his own way.

INDIE: Is that what your father admired?

NIKE: Sadly, yes.

INDIE: Do you admire him?

NIKE: Khrushchev, or my father?

INDIE: Both.

NIKE: The answer is neither.

INDIE: Is there anyone you do admire?

NIKE: Do I have to answer that?

INDIE: No.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Surgeons claimed Braccio would live. For three days, he lay in Caldora's tent, neither speaking nor eating, as if he were trying to die. Ferrari was brought in to cheer him up with light-hearted songs. Nothing worked. On the third day, he gave up his ghost.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story about a young man who put more than his foot in it

Neither one would budge. His mother called the boy Lorenzo. Manfredo called him Lothario. Ferrari himself had been named after a character in Boccaccio's Il Decamerone, though his father had probably never read anything by Boccaccio, or by anyone at all for that matter. He had heard it from an erudite and completely accidental drinking partner. His usual associates were not the literary type.

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring a man who didn't like what he saw

"If you must know, I didn't see eye to eye with Bei."

Tae giggled. He said, "Neither do the men."

"You are awful. You're keeping me from my planting."

Tae stopped Bo. He held her by the arm. He said, "There is no work without rest." She turned to face him. Tae gazed into her eyes. "Maybe we can do both together."

– from “How Tae & Bo Took Over the World and Kung & Fu Didn't,” an apocryphal bible story about waiting for the opportunity to strike

Pat Harris was speechless. It didn't happen often. He recovered quickly. "I didn't know," he stuttered, "you were a woman."

Read wasn't surprised. She sized up the man. She replied, "Neither did I."

"You must forgive Mr. Harris," said Uzumaki. "He has a habit of being particularly uninformed."

"That," said the woman, "makes two of us."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a frank discussion of partnership

Astrologers agreed. They predicted neither Sforza nor Braccio would long survive the other. When Sforza departed Ortona with his army and headed north toward the mouth of the Pescara River, the headwaters of which concealed Braccio, the astrologers warned against it. Even the men were frightened when a standard bearer tripped and tore their precious bandiera. Sforza was undeterred.

Fortune does favor the brave, thought Ferrari, but woe to he who ignores a bad omen.

Usage of Neither in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: (to KOKOMO) It's getting dusty in here, don't you think?

KOKOMO: Not really.

FLETCHER: Start dusting.

GREY GOOSE: I'll help.

FLETCHER: No need: she can take care of it herself. Are you wearing my perfume?

GREY GOOSE: Of course not.

MS. JACKSON: Why is everybody being so helpful? especially you?

GREY GOOSE: I'm a new man, remember? Didn't you say so yourself? I can't follow this poetic way of speaking you've adopted.

MS. JACKSON: It's not that new and neither are you. What is going on?

GREY GOOSE: Nothing. Can't a man help around the house?

– ACT II, lines 382-391

LESBIAN: How would he feel if he saw us?

MS. JACKSON: What does it matter?

LESBIAN: It does.

MS. JACKSON: Why?

LESBIAN: I don't want hurt him either.

MS. JACKSON: Is that what you're afraid of? Are you afraid of what people might say?

LESBIAN: That's ridiculous.

MS. JACKSON: Are you afraid of having to stay here on Norfolk?

LESBIAN: I'm not afraid of anything.

MS. JACKSON: Neither am I. I'm not afraid anymore. I'm not afraid of arson or gossip or what people might say if they knew about us. I've been set free from all of those things. I'm no longer afraid of being hurt. Oh, Homo! Do you know what I suffered? It was worse than any prison. The walls were all around my heart. It was like being perpetually pinched. I am grateful to you for saving me from all of that pain. You showed me freedom.

– ACT I, lines 899-908

(ALICE grimaces and rubs her neck again.)

FLETCHER: You really did strain it.

ALICE: It's fine.

FLETCHER: It's not. Come on. Kokomo has a bunch of differently scented oils. You can have your pick.

ALICE: It seems you've got me at your mercy.

FLETCHER: You won't regret it - neither will your neck.

ALICE: We'll see.

FLETCHER: You're welcome. It's too bad Kokomo's not here. She's the expert.

ALICE: Where is she?

FLETCHER: Who knows?

– ACT I, lines 487-495

LUKE: No kidding.

FLETCHER: She's made forty-seven thousand dollars.

LUKE: Already?

FLETCHER: It's been quite some time. She left Fiji a few years back because of a bad situation. She's still trying to reach her mark. Much to my mother's consternation, neither charity nor her wages count towards her commitment. She hasn't been seeing many clients recently. I assume she's waiting for that special somebody who's prepared to put her out of business. Unfortunately, few people are willing to pay three thousand dollars for sex.

LUKE: She wouldn't do it for less, would she?

FLETCHER: It's not a profession to her anymore; it's a punishment: a debt of honor for losing her child.

LUKE: You can't bargain with that.

FLETCHER: You could be the last one. You could put an end to this misery. She deserves somebody who can appreciate what he's doing.

LUKE: Three thousand dollars is a lot of money.

FLETCHER: The peace of mind it brings is priceless.

– ACT I, lines 771-780

GREY GOOSE: Not to mention this island's penchant for making the most grotesque of assumptions - never mind that. I did a terrible thing in burning down that house: I know it. I've been paying for it ever since. I'm finally sorry for doing it. I don't think I could've said that this morning. Something's changed. I don't want to be like that anymore. I don't want to do those things. I think the Australians should mind their own business; that's neither here nor there. If you didn't squeal my name to the police, somebody else did. I'm going to find that person - not to burn down his house - to talk to him calmly and rationally: to put these absurd suspicions to rest. Everybody deserves to hear the truth, especially the people you love. I was kicked out not because of my reputation or the looks you were getting in town. It wasn't because you thought I killed that girl. It was because I hurt you. I hurt you a long time ago and I've always been too selfish to realize it. I expected you to understand - even though I never properly explained myself. It had nothing to do with you. You were perfect. I loved you. I was afraid of being a father. You know my childhood - or perceived lack thereof. I was insecure. I was scared to death. I panicked. I didn't talk to anybody about it because I was ashamed. I thought that, if you knew, you would despise me for it. You were always so strong and fearless. I envied you. When your family came and asked me what was going on, I lied. I acted as if I didn't care about you anymore: as if I had lost interest. Nothing could've been further from the truth. I was an idiot. I was such an idiot. I'm sorry for that. I'm so sorry for everything. I won't trouble you anymore. Even if you and your friend want to move in together, I won't trouble you. File divorce papers in the morning. You can keep the house - and the sofa bed - and the mattress - and the comforter - and the dishwasher. You can even keep the cook - and the boy.

– ACT II, line 356

Usage of Neither in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Steve and I announced our intention to go fishing. We warned the others the nearest pond was quite the hike away. It was going to be dark soon. Peter didn't mind. Neither did Mary. She walked the entire way in her flip-flops. I know she got sore because on the way back she was limping. She fell behind. I thought Steve would make sure she would come back alive but he walked into camp alone. He didn't know where Mary was. Nobody seemed to want to search for her. I expressed confidence that she had probably gone to her car but she traipsed out of the woods just as I was going to breathe a sigh of relief.

– from “Woodstock,” a life story based on true events as I lived them

Proctor tried to reach Elizabeth. She wasn't picking up. Neither was her sister. He kept trying. He walked all the way home. He went straight to the parlor where he kept his gun. He opened the drawer. It was empty. He heard the hammer cocking back. It was next to his head.

"Looking for this?" asked Bob.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a former flame put in a weird position

The Amazon was not convinced. He wanted spies. He wanted somebody Orbitz could not resist. He asked for and received approval for an arousal profile. It determined that Orbitz's taste for the opposite sex tended towards the slighty exotic. His taste for men closely matched his own mostly human pedigree. Out of all Alliance staff members in the local database two scientists fit the profile perfectly. A human astrobiologist named Pfizer Microsoft and an astrolinguist of mostly Eridanian extraction pursuing a medical degree. Neither had according to their records any reason to be loyal to Orbitz. They had never met the man. The Amazon made sure. He first trotted Doctor Microsoft before a board of inquiry. The Astrazeneca listened as he vehemently denied being a Wiki-en. They said, "This is truth." Then the Amazon brought out the Eridanian. She had been born and raised in the Solar System. She had never visited her ancestral world. She was young. Innocent. Her skin beautifully tinged with blue. She said her name was Sara Lee.

Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others.
