None, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is deliberating on the idea of boosting his unprepossessing Fiction Corpus with an encylopedia of science fiction ideas; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the practicality of administering English as a common language for the world. I don't have faith in the irksome form in which the English language is taught.Pointer

Reinforcing a person's mastery of a language isn't like creating a stronger sail. A language - a living tongue - is not just a tool that you can teach yourself to use with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue can't be sequestered from the philosophical currents of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make people recite English is to strip them of its cultural context. A worthy teacher has to create a strategy for introducing it; the wisest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a particular corpus, a body of written language of varying scope and consistency. They might include everything from a book about literature to a whole collection of top fiction novels. I burnt many candles creating my "resplendent" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drafted a million words and I have tabulated them, reshaping them - not merely to teach a language but to promote the human spirit, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 8 Answers the Question, "Which?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. You can remember that the last type of word answers the question "Which?" by asking yourself which day is the most important day of the week. The answer is Sunday, or Victory Day, which is a day for everyone to celebrate the art of being human.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

As an American, I was full of optimism and confidence bordering on recklessness. I was ready to run the wheels off the car I had just bought and eventually I would. As a European, she was cautious and mistrustful. She needed to make sure the air conditioner worked. Which it did. If you knew how to turn the broken knob in just the right way.

There were times during our trip when I thought there might not be a happy ending. There were times when disaster was close and I wondered whether I hadn't made a mistake. I wondered whether fear, anger or sadness might triumph and one of us would have to finished the journey alone. Though I dangled from the cliffs of Normady I was saved. Though the lights went out I rode on. Though I ran the tires down to the wire I was okay. We drove home in one piece. We came home happy. We had started the process of learning how to listen and the sound of it was beautiful. We could be sure that we were ready to conquer the devils that abuse us no matter how long it would take.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word None

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word none in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word none, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word none is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"I kind of like it," said Zoe. She hugged his waist, nestling her nonexistent chin into his trapezius. Jesus just laughed and laughed.

Verse 698 from the chapter called Security

"I said it was none of his business - what else would I say?" She looked at me.

Verse 596 from the chapter called Bohemia

None of this mattered on Mars. There, on that planet, where anti-trust laws had absolutely no jurisdiction, Cheap Alaskan Air bottles were produced and sold as usual - with face masks - right until the Revolution.

Verse 80 from the chapter called Childhood

Your grandfather started selling his books on the eastern side of Town Square, right in front of your great-grandmother's apartment building. There were other vendors on the western side selling fruit. None of them had licenses. Again, the shopkeepers called the police, who, after cracking down on peddlers along the town's main street, made it to Town Square and asked all of the fruit vendors to leave. One of them was fined for being troublesome. Then the police left. Afterwards, all the vendors came back.

Verse 70 from the chapter called Adolescence

In those days, hundreds of Martian refugees were seeking asylum on Earth. Most of them were refused. Almost none of them had anything relevant to say about Mars's political situation. They were seeking life in peace and quiet, having escaped from the red planet, having survived the dangerous trip through space, and having almost nothing to say but that Mars was in chaos. Capitalists were incredulous, considering that Mars had the cleanest air and water, free land, and plenty of opportunities for growth. Despite the mysteries of the Revolution - and, perhaps, because of it - many people, especially Capitalists, were dying to go to Mars. They couldn't understand why anyone would want to leave: by then, terrorism was everywhere: it reared its ugly head in Spain, then France, then Germany. Pretty soon, it was going to be in Poland. Nevertheless, Poland accepted many of the Martian refugees. Unfortunately, before long, their lives would be in grave danger.

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

None of this was done consciously - and yet, I admit: these things were born of conscious jealousy, executed in unconscious retribution - all under the spell of the most painful of conscious loves.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 2, Letting It Steam, Paragraph 5

But he was always telling his stories to other people. Some of them I would hear several times, depending on the company we shared, but never, not once, was I personally privileged with a story. His opinions I would hear, sometimes even his principles; he always shared his feelings, which is something I rarely did and only with great difficulty; on the other hand, he rarely gossiped, but he offered countless anecdotes, often involving other people; none of these, however, were stories, which included all these elements and more besides.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 5, Falling in Love, Paragraph 4, Clauses 4-7

You should be grateful too: for the luxury of contemplating the vagaries of your situation in relative peace - unless, of course, Albert suspects that something serious might be brewing. He's not an idiot, and he knows Indiana better than we do; he knows that she's capable of foolish things, and he trusts you. Do not place yourself in a worse position by straying downwind: whatever Indiana be planning, make sure she won't be able to abuse you, and, whatever Albert thinks, make sure you can always defend yourself. Do not forget that he may know more than we expect. Out of necessity, I neglect his own desires in this analysis - but they are there, nonetheless, constantly affecting matters, and you must be wary of this variable.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 6, Judging Looks, Paragraph 1

"Maybe they were working."

"In the bushes? I doubt it. None of the cars were stopped. It was a steady stream of traffic. People cruising, waiting for the man-whores."

LUKA: Maybe they were tourists.

Usage of None in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The case against Captain Orbitz stymied. The investigation plodded on. It was discovered that Orbitz had recently purchased a ship, the Nautilus. It was capable of inter-brane travel. He was seen in private conversation with an enginner from a planet abandoned by the Alliance to marauding Scutus forces. He was in constant contact with the lieutenant in charge of operating the prototype for an automated combat system. All of it curious. None of it meaningful. When the funding for the combat system was discontinued as part of a swath of spending cuts it generated the usual bitterness and threats among the interested parties. Among them turned out to be Orbitz. Within one microarcsecond of the announcement he tendered his resignation. It was an outrage. He was the poster child of the military. If he didn't want to be a courier anymore he could have a desk job. He could be a liaison. Or a recruiter. He didn't have to quit. According to Orbitz he could no longer serve a government that didn't safeguard its own citizens. As far as the Admiralty could tell he was referring to some outlying garbage planet. It was obscene.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written in honor of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

I met family. I was introduced to a long lost uncle. Some cousins. Things were going great. Until I realized none of these people spoke Ukrainian. They spoke Moldovan. They assured me it was basically Romanian. It didn't help. All the books I had bought were for Ukrainian. All the time I wasted preparing for the trip was spent learning Ukrainian phrases. I was reduced to a repeating series of infantile gestures and nods of my head. I felt supremely embarrassed until the alcohol finally kicked in.

– from “The Most Idiotic Actress,” a fictional story based on somebody's real life as related to the author

I wondered if she were right. Was it possible for there to be a difference between us? Were our generations so far apart? Were we not experiencing the same systems? Socialism, communism, capitalism, Christianity - were they not as powerful now as they ever were? Perhaps the influence was being overshadowed - by what? Our technologies were trite; our movements, nonexistent. What was my generation doing? Treading water? I took a puff of marijuana. It didn't matter. It was getting late.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's nerves depending on your outlook

The shopkeeper never talked. The Amazon was forced to do things the old-fashioned way. He started interviewing the shop's most frequent customers. The kinder more gentle among them reported having felt a strange sense that a small trapped creature was somewhere in the area. Some of them had even gone so far as to walk around the block. The bravest had considered entering a neon building right next to the shop. They had wanted to go up to the second floor. None had been brave enough to do it.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
