Such, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to contemplate the feasibility of compounding his extensive Fiction Corpus with a history of tattoo art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the prospect of employing English as a global standard. I do question the prevailing model by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Improving a person's expertise with a language isn't like creating a hotter kiln. A language - a living tongue - isn't just a tool that you can learn to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A spoken language cannot be disunited from the prevailing culture of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A worthy instructor has to develop a technique for introducing it; the smartest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a specific corpus, a body of writing of varying scope and consistency. This corpus could include anything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of narrative fiction. I burnt many candles creating my "unimposing" Fiction Corpus in order to form a specific kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have sculpted a million words and I have codified them, reframing them - not merely to teach English vocabulary but to defend the human spirit, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 8 Answers the Question, "Which?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. You can remember that the last type of word answers the question "Which?" by asking yourself which day is the most important day of the week. The answer is Sunday, or Victory Day, which is a day for everyone to celebrate the art of being human.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Such

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word such in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word such, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word such is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Such in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

By the time your father found the Internet, there were terrorists in Wroclaw. They were fighting elements of the 2nd Infantry Brigade and Silesian Air Squadron. The search engine's homepage was full of interesting information about terrorism: like, for instance, where to go in case of injury from terrorist attack, how to protect yourself and your beloved family from poison gas, what to do in case a terrorist comes crashing into your apartment, et cetera, et cetera. The only thing it didn't tell you is where the terrorists were - obviously, such information would be redundant if a terrorist were already crashing into your apartment, but if that terrorist were crashing into your neighbor's apartment, it might be helpful to know that. As it was, there was nothing: no information concerning the terrorists' whereabouts. They were in Wroclaw: that's all you needed to know. According to Lucius, we had already known that; we had let them in ourselves. In the end, it was all the same: after all, terrorists were everywhere.

Verse 744 from the chapter called Adolescence

Forgive me, child, when I say that I found her, at first, only somewhat attractive. Her forehead was huge; her chin, nonexistent. Only later did I fully realize how well the two complemented each other - it required a sophisticated taste, one which I did not yet possess - but, nevertheless, even the most sophisticated taste would have required some sort of refinement to accept her beauty for what it was: complex and unrepentant. Unearthly was the best word. She was half-Japanese and half-Martian, which made her broad and narrow at the same time. It gave her a short and straight and yet upturned nose that anywhere else would've been ugly, but which on her was essential to the whole. It was a package of such unexpected brilliance that the parts were too bold to allow for quick and easy appreciation of the angelic splendor that shone from within and without. She was light. She was truly an angel. Hers was the most serene and gentle complexion I would ever come to value, and, at first, it struck me as rather odd. It was square and round, flat and curved, with almond-shaped eyes whose lids folded around her eyeballs - they were beautiful eyes. I came to love them with all my heart. What a strange and complex face your mother had.

Verse 442 from the chapter called Bohemia

Whether or not it were indeed modesty was not important. I later had reasons to doubt its true nature, but the truth of the matter is: I was oblivious to such analysis at the time. At the time, I was conscious of little else but the fact that I was courting a young woman's attention. My motives were inconsequential; success and victory were all that mattered. This 'modest façade' theory was the product of later attempts to explain to myself my actions and feelings, which, by a certain point, seemed to be springing, not from any conscious pool of memory, but from a void, like the one from which infants awake, and to which we feel compelled to add frustratingly unknowable significance and effect.

Verse 439 from the chapter called Bohemia

Sticks and stones were the first weapons known to man. There was a choice to be made between a strong stick, broken off in such a way as to have a nice point, which was the first spear, and a handily shaped stone, which was the first club. Only in the afterlife shall we discover what the first hunter's prey was, but there's a good chance, considering man's humble stature in those days, that, with his relative lack of experience in mind, it was either a slow fish, or a dumb bird, or perhaps even a blind squirrel. Unless one of those three creatures happened to jump into his lap, we can safely assume that, whichever weapon he chose to use, he threw it.

Verse 1 from the chapter called Arms

"No, I didn't. I just killed an ant. Ants aren't God; they're ants." What pathetic silliness, I thought to myself. Who could not pity the poor creature who says such silly things with such apparent conviction? and then indulges her own silliness! What cheek! What brash contempt towards one's self! It was pitiable and wretched: it made me sad.

Verse 821 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Such in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Once in fact, Macy and I spent the entire day together, sightseeing for the most part. I distinctly remember our trip to the fine arts museum. I excitedly showed him Bellini's naked woman, the one holding a mirror, and explained how Bellini was ninety years old when he painted her, and how so few women were ever portrayed with such openness.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 4, Meeting a Man in Austria, Paragraph 7, Clauses 1-3

Is it a person's right to participate simply because the participants receive privileges? There is something perplexing about that. It's also strange that the court interprets the protection of the traditional family as equivalent to actively increasing the number of people who choose to belong to such families, and that because the state cannot prove it could increase those numbers, it has no rational reason to protect that tradition. Can you figure that one out? I urge you to read the argument: perhaps you can decipher some sensibility in all that garbage.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 18, The Role of the Judicious Mind, Paragraph 4

Therefore: tread carefully. Do not place yourself in dangerous positions. You were able to avoid having to paint her house, but you cannot avoid giving your piano lessons, which now appear to be the most ingenious device Indiana could ever have imagined. You certainly owe her a debt of gratitude for her patronage; I am still bewildered: who could've known that she had such an extensive social network in London? All well-to-do women with children just waiting to learn piano! You were certainly lucky for it. But you should finish your novel quickly and come home. Teaching piano is not your profession; it is only an excuse to live in London.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 34, Propogating a Concept of Duty, Paragraph 7

The bidding for Barbara started at twenty dollars. Some student in a red baseball cap went for twenty, and then Luke immediately bumped it up to twenty-five. I hit him in the ribs and told him to stay out of it until the time was right. He asked me when that would be and I had to snap back; if he didn't know I couldn't explain it to him. By the time I turned my attention back to the bidding, it was up to thirty-five dollars. As somebody called out forty, I told Luke that this was usually where the real war breaks out - not that I know anything about bidding, but things seemed to be going well; I was suddenly buoyed with false confidence. Somebody yelled out forty-five and I looked up at Babs and she was looking straight at me, smiling such a beautiful smile; I wish I could've sketched it. And then disaster struck.

They had a white heifer slain in her honor. They presented it to Gog. They told him their goddess was a fellow warrior. It would please her to watch Magog enjoy the gift.

The best place to practice such skills was on Long Island. Beyond the boundary of New York City lay what Junior liked to call, 'Country Club County.' Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

ALICE: It's difficult. I like it. Sometimes I do wish he were more sensual.

MS. JACKSON: I know the feeling.

ALICE: When we have sex, it's all about the penetration. There is no foreplay.

LESBIAN: Nothing?

ALICE: Spread 'em and weep.

MS. JACKSON: Men are such animals - present company excepted, of course.

ALICE: Did you see that performance they put on?

LESBIAN: Absolutely dreadful.

ALICE: I thought it was sexy.

LESBIAN: It reminds me of a dance I saw in Fiji.

GREY GOOSE: Speak up.

MS. JACKSON: There is no lighter sound than the ring of truth. It springs from the tongue like a frightened toad, aiming its horny skin into the eyes of those who would seek to catch it. Were you to devour a million truths you would never find them all and you'd still be as hungry as when you first started - so beware, husband, lest you choke.

GREY GOOSE: On a frog in my throat? Have you gone mad? There are no frogs on this island, woman - in case you hadn't noticed your entire life. I suppose that friend of yours from New Zealand taught you to speak with such poetry.

MS. JACKSON: New Zealand has a great literary heritage. That's something you couldn't possibly understand.

MS. JACKSON: You are a bully: a no-good, bleeding, rebel-rousing bully.

GREY GOOSE: Alright.

MS. JACKSON: A fire-starter.

GREY GOOSE: Enough.

MS. JACKSON: Arsonist!

ALICE: It was no big deal. It was some stupid kid with a knife.

FLETCHER: Was it sharp?

LUKE: She didn't have a chance to taste it.

FLETCHER: What did it look like?

ALICE: It was just a regular jackknife. It wasn't very big.

FLETCHER: What did he get away with?

ALICE: My purse.

LUKE: With everything in it.

ALICE: It was so stupid. The cops could've picked him up around the corner if they had just bothered to look. They were such pigs.

FLETCHER: Don't tell that to old Grey Goose! Australian cops guilty of misprision? He would go on a rampage.

Something glimmered through the haze above the clouds. It was the sails of Captain Orbitz's ship. Hundreds of thousands of miles long. Pfizer paused. He wanted to see if he could spot lensing from the gravitational pull of the tesseract. After a moment he shut his eyes. He was succumbing to the glamour of the dark side. It was unacceptable to glorify such hideous machines of war.

The Amazon rushed into the interrogation room. He grabbed the shopkeeper's head and pulled it back. He stared into his eyes. He didn't have to ask the questions. He had already convinced himself. He let go of the man. He started pacing. His mind raced. The creature was a telepath of immense power. It went beyond distinguishing truth from falsehood. It could tell how far a man was willing to go. It could sense how much a man was willing to sacrifice. The Amazon started laughing. He turned to the shopkeeper and slapped his face with the back of his hand. The stupid fool couldn't see past the doors of his own shop. With a creature of such power a Amazon could conquer the universe. The shopkeeper looked up. His face was awash with blood. The Amazon grabbed him. He seethed with the impatience born of greed. He stared into his man's eyes and growled, "Where is it?"

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

As I was heading to the door Kelly told me to buy a razor. She couldn't understand why I didn't have one. I asked her what it was for. She gave me a funny look. She said her pubes were growing back. I told her that's what I wanted. She turned away. She didn't say a word. As I went back to the door she shouted, "Are you gonna get one or not?" I was angry. I realized why she had been such a pillow princess the past week. Here I was thinking she was bashful. She just didn't like my bush. I tore my panties off right then and there. I made her like it.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
