The, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's thinking over the potency of enlarging his substantial Fiction Corpus with some real non fictional work; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the soundness of honoring English as a global lingua franca. I do question the altogether average program by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Reinforcing a person's expertness with a language isn't like promoting a brighter firework. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely an instrument that you can learn to wield with a greater amount of precision. A living language can not be cut off from the competing values of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. An informed teacher has to find a way to introduce it; the prudent pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language based on a particular corpus, a set of written works of various size and consistency. They might include everything from a book about fiction books to a whole bunch of romance fiction books. I watched many moons pass developing my "extravagant" Fiction Corpus to form a different kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have inspected them, reframing them - not just to teach a language but to reveal the human spirit, and to coax that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 8 Answers the Question, "Which?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. You can remember that the last type of word answers the question "Which?" by asking yourself which day is the most important day of the week. The answer is Sunday, or Victory Day, which is a day for everyone to celebrate the art of being human.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word The

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word the in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word the, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word the is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of The in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

We are always intrigued by the unfamiliar. Someday, perhaps Russians will bring us chicken broth and we will wonder at it. My grandmother used to tell me how Poles went to Germany to sell their lard, and how it sold! as if Germans had never seen a pig before! Lard with onions! On bread! Smeared on bread! Lard smeared on bread was the greatest thing they had ever seen. It makes one laugh, but these things happen.

Verse 71 from the chapter called Childhood

Oh God! Your mother was so beautiful. She was a diamond ring! A blessed creature! She died! God! She died! Zeus: creature of dust! You took her! You chopped off her head! Placed her in death and destruction! I loved your mother. She was a good woman. She trusted me. In the end, she trusted me. I loved her.

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

But my jealousy and our intimate relations were able to coexist for a long time, and one did not overpower the other until, of course, a woman came between us. Ms. Christie was a charming woman, in large part because, unlike Macy, she was completely artless - by which I mean: it was much harder for me to notice when and how she was consciously pursuing self-promotion.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 6, Third Party Intervention, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

Of course, I thought myself capable of their magic. I believed if I had only had the chance to sit in degustation from a tender age, I would have developed a similar ability. But as we were not privileged with such a Dionysian patrimony, for many years I thought we had been rescued from that dizzying duty of having to taste so many wines (I did not know that one spits).

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

"Wait!" cried Nike. "Let me help." He caught up. He darted in front of her. He stopped her by the shoulders. "Who?" he asked. "Who told you to come?" Her eyes filled with-not terror-something like ambivalence. Nike pressed the question. "What's his name?"

She tried to pass. Nikki pushed back.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story about the human body

The smoothness of the leather reassured me. I stroked it. I thought of my leg: the poison ivy I once brushed pulling overgrown grape vines from the trees: the week-long rash I suffered, whose blisters having burst, whose pus having wept dry, left that spot intoxicatingly numb, sprinkled with delightfully silky bumps, a token of pain patiently endured, an itch fitfully ignored, a small triumph of will, now faded into memory, temporarily rescued from the abyss of oblivion.

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: Bigger than your husband.

LESBIAN: Or so I'm told. I didn't actually see them. What I saw was smaller: about six or seven feet. They had these big beaks and enormous eyes made from concentric circles: each circle colored differently from the next. They looked like crazed chickens dancing around like that. Of course, with masks so big, the focus turns to a dancer's legs, the swaying of his hips-

MS. JACKSON: And everything in between.

ALICE: Ms. Jackson!

LESBIAN: His arms are busy holding up the mask.

MS. JACKSON: I'm not surprised: making women do the work.

LESBIAN: I wonder if any Polynesians use a big mask. Would your cook know?

MS. JACKSON: Probably not. Where is my cook? Does she know the kitchen still needs cleaning?

FLETCHER: Why are you looking at me?

– ACT I, lines 424-432

FLETCHER: I must get that from my father.

KOKOMO: By the way, Fletch, your old man came around.

I don't know who to thank for my fate. I know God has a lot to do with it. As does Putin. And my own imagination. And the many friends of mine at university. And Barack. And Obama. And Khalifa.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes what certain people go through, though hopefully you're not one of them

My father thinks I'm being immature. He doesn't realize I'm trying to mock him. It's all his fault. Pretending to cheat on his wife. As if he didn't know it would cause a disaster. For two years my mother refused him sex. Why would she think he was pretending?

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
