Everyone, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is kicking around the idea of enhancing his humungous Fiction Corpus with a history of graphic art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the idea of exercising English as a universal standard. I don't think highly of the unsensational form in which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Perfecting a person's familiarity with a language isn't like producing a smoother toilet paper. A language - a living tongue - isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to employ with greater amounts of precision. A common language cannot be divided from the competing values of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a man recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A proper teacher has to develop a plan for introducing it; the discerning pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words based on a particular corpus, a set of written language of varying scope and consistency. This corpus could include anything from a book about literature to some real mystery stories. I watched many nights pass laboring on my "whopping" Fiction Corpus to form a peculiar kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have deconstructed them, reshaping them - not simply to teach an American language but to reveal the human soul, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

Europe, the summer of 2011. Twelve countries. 46 days. One car. One tent. One man. One woman he's just met.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

I've never been married. I've never been divorced. I've never had kids. I've never lost my kids. That doesn't mean I can't try to understand somebody who has. By listening to Margo during our trip across Europe I started to consider her needs as if they were my own. I may not have been in a position to satisfy all of those needs, but I was able to shut up and put my own needs aside if I had to for at least 6,000 miles. We all need to be listened to and it is the one need that we all have a duty to satisfy. When somebody prays to another human, as a human you have a duty to listen. Humanity needs to start teaching itself that skill.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Everyone

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word everyone in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word everyone, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word everyone is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Everyone in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

The order's Rule was modeled after the Benedictine and was cowritten by Jesus and the Pope, who took a very serious personal interest. The Cosmonauts were divided into four classes: two ranks of combatants - knights and sergeants, who were necessarily members of the Brigade - and two ranks of non-combatants - chaplains, who were consecrated priests, and servants, who were either tenants in charge of management or nurses in charge of health care. Requirements for admission to these ranks were stipulated by the Rule, and, though initially the Pope was allowed to choose, albeit it with Jesus's approval, the number and identity of the chaplains, afterwards, on Mars, only the Grand Master would need decide. Jesus was allowed to choose his own servants and sergeants but candidates for the knighthood would have to be approved by the chaplains. Vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience only had to be permanent for chaplains and knights. Everyone else could take temporary vows if he or she so desired. The vow of chastity, as it pertained to non-clerics, did not include celibacy but allowed for marriage within the order.

Verse 89 from the chapter called Vows

"Who are you to call everyone corrupt? This man has lost his reason: he's an animal. Did you see him? He ripped this man's throat apart."

"I saved your life, you ungrateful bastard."

Verses 366-367 from the chapter called Arms

In the first grade, I told Jesus to give himself a middle initial like everybody else. That way, there would be no embarrassing questions. He did it. Then, everyone began saying where he or she was born: specifically, which hospital. I told Jesus to say 'Bethesda' like everybody else, but he said no: he didn't want to lie: that would be bad. When the teacher asked him, "In which hospital were you born, Jesus?" He said, "Poland."

Verse 102 from the chapter called Childhood

"The fucking military is collaborating - do you understand that? They're ready to shell the city - their own fucking city! Can you believe that? Instead of having the balls to go from house to house looking for those faggots, they're gonna drop shells! What the fuck is that? That's why they're trying to evacuate the Old Town. They're sayin', 'Leave your homes: go north.' They think if they evacuate Center City and Old Town by having all those people filter through the northern checkpoints, all they're gonna have left is terrorists. That's bullshit. Unless they say they're gonna shell it, not everyone's gonna leave. Not the old people, anyway: they're gonna sit at home until the radio says they're gonna drop shells - even then they're not gonna move. Anyway, who the fuck's gonna say that? That would be idiotic. That would be like saying, 'Hey, terrorists: wake up for the invasion' - so they can slip away? What the fuck is that? The only terrorist you can recognize is the one that's shooting at you. Otherwise, who the fuck is it? Nobody - it's somebody without papers - I don't know - somebody walkin' off with loot. All they gotta do is drop their weapons and voila: they melt away. It's fuckin' bullshit. It's not fuckin' fair is what it is - but that's life. That's business. Like you, you motherfuckin' pip-squeak: what the fuck is your problem, man? You have got balls to screw me up."

The car in front of us stopped.

Verses 121-122 from the chapter called Arms

Your father dressed his top lieutenants in the national colors of Poland that day - not for any personal reasons but because the wardrobe was being provided by a right-wing Polish political party, which, having lost most of its parliamentary seats in that year's parliamentary elections, was, nevertheless, courting your father's support for its presidential candidate. Your father was saving as much money as possible for his Independent (Lower Silesian) Riflemen's Armored Brigade and its upcoming deployment to Mars, and, not having made any specific promises to the League of Polish Nuclear Families, was more than willing to allow them to outfit his men. After all, the wedding was taking place in Poland, in a Polish Church (the Sanctuary of Lichen), your mother was being married to a Pole - however disgraceful and corrupt a Pole - and therefore, there was no reason why your father, a very, very proud Pole himself, shouldn't have been wearing the old royal colors of red and white. In fact, your father took the liberty of reducing everyone's chest measurements by a small but significant margin, making sure that every single member of his party, after having trouble putting on his jacket, had appropriate posture.

Usage of Everyone in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Is this not the purest form of love: to know someone's worth and to accept it? Is this not how we must love ourselves and our neighbors? Since we cannot love God in this way: for God is unknowable, and our admiration for Him will always pale next to His admiration for us. Only He can love Himself and everyone else purely.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraph 16

Now the reason for my erection was straightforward. The truth is: the sight of Gianni's naked body was, in fact, stimulating...and I often experienced erections in his presence. But, my arousal was not the product of desire: it was the product of a simple visual stimulant working with my imagination. To put it plainly: Giovanni was being sexy, and I was being aroused. Not everyone would be comfortable with himself in that sort of situation, but I knew it for what it was: intentional arousal on the part of Giovanni which I had nothing to do with. It didn't mean I wanted to have sex with him. It didn't mean I wanted to have sex with anyone. And I certainly didn't want him looking at me lustfully. I didn't want his hand on my shoulder petting me. I didn't want his hand anywhere else, but I didn't say anything, because...I was...I don't know: maybe I was waiting to see what would happen. But, of course, he was arousing me more and more: anybody's hand will do that, especially when it's drawing lightly across the skin.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 3, Explaining Things Honestly in an Incomplete Way, Paragraph 4, Clauses 7-18

ANDY: My dear Macy, I know what you think. You think I'm fooling myself, don't you? You think I'm putting on a show for myself and for everyone else around me. And I know you think that because I know what you know. But I know a whole lot more: I know myself. And I know you're wrong. And that's why you are so pathetic to me. Based on one little incident, you think you know me. You think because you were privileged with a story that no one else knows: you have my secret. But you are foolish.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 1, Love, Hope, Desire and Suspicion, Paragraph 51

You, on the other hand: you were still fishing around for that ball, and only after our father and our uncle came through the house with Albert did you finally come walking up that hill. I remember the moment distinctly: our father was joking that Albert being Hungarian, and Indiana being Romanian, we had the better part of the old Austrian empire assembled before us. Indiana began elaborating the joke, and, as she neared a punch line, you appeared, wet and out of breath, just in time to watch everyone heartily laugh - everyone but me and Indiana, of course. You had no idea what the joke was, and, as if searching for an explanation, you had to look around quickly, ignoring me (of course), before transfixing your eyes on the source of everyone's merriment.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 1, Genital Pain as a Result of Physical Trauma, Paragraph 4

But there is something very fascinating about this kind of love: it cannot be measured by its intensity. Unlike attraction or devotion or attention or loyalty or concern, we cannot favor anyone with this kind of love. We can only deny it. But, if we deny no one, then we are bestowing this kind of love on everyone equally. With admiration, we cannot love anyone more or less.

Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others.
