He, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's wrestling with the soundness of enhancing his sensational Fiction Corpus with his top science fiction yet; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the possibility of harnessing English as an international standard. I do reject the enfeebling technique by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Refining one's knowledge of a language isn't like producing a bigger dam. A language - a living tongue - is not just a tool that you can teach yourself to employ with a greater amount of precision. A spoken tongue can not be uncoupled from the philosophical currents of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A capable instructor must find a way to introduce it; the perceptive student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a particular corpus, a set of written language of varying size and consistency. They may contain anything from a book about literature to a copious amount of the best fiction books yet. I burnt many candles forging my "monolithic" Fiction Corpus in order to form a special class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have shaped a million words and I have sorted them, reshaping them - not merely to teach a tongue but to promote the human soul, and to prod that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On Monday, I arrived in Europe. By Wednesday I had bought a car. By Friday I had met the woman who a few months later would end up having travelling 6,000 miles across Europe with me.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

THE DISAPPEARING WOMAN, THE DISAPPEARING MAN...Pointer

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word He

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word he in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word he, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word he is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of He in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

What an asshole, I thought. Was he even aware of himself? So his ancestors imported game to Mars - so what? Grande cuisine: what Polack would make this for him? Why do our best chefs look outside our borders, or in books of foreign history? Don't they know that our cuisine is peasant cuisine? It favors the bold, not the delicate; the simple, not the rich. It finds what is common, not esoteric. It has its own subtle flavors which must be exploited, not abandoned. Like chicken broth: why did we abandon our Sunday broth? Once upon a time, it wasn't Sunday if chicken broth were not served for dinner. And why did we abandon it? For what? For leisure? For the sake of time? Or taste? Is it possible we actually prefer the taste of manufactured products? Like instant soup? Soup in a can? Or did that come later? Did we forget the taste of a boiling chicken's juice? Did we become estranged from our domestic traditions? Or did we choose to abandon them? Were we ashamed of chicken broth? Or disgusted? But why? when a woman like Catherine de Médicis takes it out of her ice-box and calls it aspic. Why were the French so enamored of it? Did they lack chickens or ice?

Verse 70 from the chapter called Childhood

On Mars, your father spent hours looking at that picture, especially when there was nothing else to do but wait. He would spend hours marveling at that tilt: such a very slight tilt, such a slight hint of motion that sent her chin up ever so slightly, making her face look solid but fluid, strong but gentle. It was very beautiful. She had a strong nose that was very long; it was followed by a small, but strong chin - strong points on a round and gentle face: your father spent hours analyzing it - the men always wondered what it was that he was contemplating.

Verse 154 from the chapter called Childhood

"'He did it alright,' said the miner. 'But first, he had a great feast: three bowls of pickle soup to start! Green salad! Potato salad! Sausage! Two pieces of ham! A pheasant! Partridge! Grouse! You see what I'm talking about? The man had game birds on Mars! The governor's meat! Game! On Mars! Roebuck! Moose! Wild boar! His father built a sheltered wilderness! He hunted! He ate the game! With sauerkraut and beans! With gravy! Bowls of fruit! Pears and peaches! Plums and grapes! A bowl of nuts for dessert! Platefuls of cakes! Jam! And then...'

"'What?' I asked, my eyes wide open.

Verses 65-66 from the chapter called Childhood

I will tell you everything from the beginning. I doubt that your grandfather will censor me. I know what he doesn't want you to see. I will keep my secrets. They are dangerous. My secrets are so dangerous, your grandfather kept me under house arrest for the past twenty years. But now that I'm in the infirmary, at death's door, he has shown mercy. I can write to you. And when you come to see me, I will hand you this work: the story of your father's life, the man who loved your mother and Your brother and who would never ever kill them. Your grandfather is cruel, but he is kind: he will let me see you. For twenty years, he has never let anyone see me, except for my beloved Hannah. You will see her! Smile to her! She will smile back. She is like your mother: kind, gentle - she even looks like her: she's half-Japanese.

Verse 14 from the chapter called Invocation

Usage of He in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

No, on the contrary, my ego would grin, because he had betrayed his hand, broken through the artifice, exposing the ankle of his soul, but perhaps most of all because he had committed the gravest sin of an entertainer: he had been openly didactic.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 5, Falling in Love, Paragraph 5, Clauses 4-5

As for Indiana, remember that these feelings are not completely subconscious, though the bulk of them may indeed permeate the fabric of her thinking. And don't forget Albert. I have no idea what he is feeling, although I can imagine the kind of stress that can come from having to deal with a woman like Indiana everyday. She is not the only person under pressure, and as much as I would like to believe that they cause themselves more stress than any outside force, I don't think that's necessarily true. Thankfully, we are not subject to so many unkind forces. I am grateful for that; and I'm sympathetic: they are good people and I like them, warts and all.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 5, Warts, Paragraph 4

Perhaps I was to blame; my memory does give me the impression that, after a certain point, it was I who habitually engaged Macy with my own dissertation. But that is trivial; if he had so desired he could have changed the course of conversation whenever he wanted. I do recall one time when I seemed to be boring him; I remember asking if I were boring but I don't remember what he said.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 5, Falling in Love, Paragraph 4, Clauses 1-3

As charming as it must seem now, I have to confess I was not in the best mood to accommodate Macy's excitement over having recognized me. Truth be told, I could hardly remember in what context we had met on campus, and his efforts to describe this or that party were not proving fruitful. But of course he was handsome, and exceedingly charming. In fact, I made a remark to my companion some time later that week, complimenting Macy's amazing control over his own face, and after I explained to her that I meant his ability to draw on a multitude of expressions, each very appropriate, and sometimes quite telling for a given circumstance, she had to agree completely.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Luka looked to either side. This road was also one way. He had to go south. Luka passed tennis courts. There was a road to the right-one way. Luka took it. He reached the Reine. He whispered to himself, "What the hell?" He was confused. He kept going. A road appeared to the right. He took it. He found himself back at the Reine. He was going in circles.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story about a woman and a man

When the relationship failed, Junior tried to figure out what went wrong. The vice-presidents were all divorced. He talked to their ex-wives. The former Mrs. Price complained her husband was never right. The former Mrs. Upshaw claimed her husband couldn't keep "it" down. The former Mrs. Stockton said, throughout her entire marriage, Dick lay there flat.

"This is no time for games."

"Go," said Nike. "Outside." He tried to point through the window. He couldn't lift his arm. His lips curled into a smile. "Earn it."

Luka laughed nervously. "This is no joke. If I don't pay them, they're going to kill me."

Nike furrowed his brow. Like a little boy, he asked, "Why?"

"Don't worry about it."

"Okay." Nike passed out.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring a place where sexual services can be bought

Nike opened the door. He stood behind it. The woman held onto the frame. She bent down. Her breasts sagged in the moonlight. Nike licked his lips. "Luka," he uttered. "We have a new passenger." Luka turned around. He watched the woman slide towards the window. Nike followed her in. "We're going for a ride."

Luka smiled. "Hello!"

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

(ALICE exits.)

KOKOMO: Yet again, I'm left holding the wet, dirty towels. Not to worry. It's alright. I don't mind. In truth, if I could spend the rest of my life cleaning up after Fletcher Christian, I would be a very happy woman. Even if that is silly and backwards, that's how I feel. I would never phrase it like that to anybody; I'm not crazy. I'd make him take out the garbage and all that. Alice is right. It's high time I told him how much he makes my heart beat. I could turn it into a joke if it looks like he's uncomfortable. That would be dreadful. What kind of a joke would it be? I need a heart transplant? That's not funny. What am I going to do?

MS. JACKSON: Kokomo!

KOKOMO: Of course: the laundry.

– ACT I, lines 1381-1383

(MS. JACKSON enters.)

MS. JACKSON: How are you coming along?

KOKOMO: I'm almost done with the floor.

MS. JACKSON: Excellent. Do you mind if I help?

KOKOMO: Not at all.

MS. JACKSON: Can you believe my husband's charity? In trying to lighten your load, he increases it ten-fold.

KOKOMO: I'm sure he meant well.

MS. JACKSON: As every man always does. I'm sorry. I didn't come to complain. I want to apologize to you personally for not being a better employer.

KOKOMO: You haven't been bad, Ms. Jackson.

MS. JACKSON: Don't lie. I know I could've been much better to you. The truth is I haven't wanted to be: not since the day I hired you. I don't know if you can understand this. I saw so much of myself in you. I hated it - not because it was a bad thing - because it was good. The things I saw in you were things about me that I felt had never been properly appreciated. I permitted my resentment to stand in the way of my great admiration. I abused you. I'm sorry. Please accept my apology.

– ACT II, lines 4-12

(FLETCHER exits.)

ALICE: Boy problems?

KOKOMO: It's nothing.

ALICE: Is he being bashful?

KOKOMO: It's slightly more complicated than that, but I suppose.

ALICE: Boys are always bashful around girls they like. They're even worse when they're in love. It doesn't matter how bold they think they are with village flirts. When they're with a girl they really care about, they're either too coy or too serious.

– ACT I, lines 1364-1368

ALICE: He ended up taking another man's wife?

FLETCHER: Sadly.

ALICE: Then what?

– ACT I, lines 613-615

LUKE: What's the difference between the two?

MS. JACKSON: Bounty families are descendant from the original Bounty mutineers, who settled on Pitcairn Island-

FLETCHER: With their Tahitian consorts. I'm sorry. I meant their Tahitian wives. And their Tahitian slaves. I mean, their male Tahitian friends.

MS. JACKSON: The Pitcairner families are descendant-

FLETCHER: From three adventurers - to be more precise, from two ack-willy whalers and a soldier-of-fortune.

LUKE: That's a ridgy-didge pedigree. Too right!

FLETCHER: It gets better. Being a direct descendant of my namesake, Fletcher Christian, the illustrious chief of the mutiny on the Bounty, I am therefore descendant from the ancient rulers of the Isle of Man.

LUKE: A reg'lar Pommy!

FLETCHER: My father's mother was a Quintal. That means half of him is descendant from a drunken scoundrel who set his ship on fire, drove his wife to suicide, and threatened to kill the entire island population. That's not the side of the story we like to tell. We prefer the story of how John Jackson turned to Christianity and taught his children to read and write. Jackson, I'll have you know, was a Christian before he became a Jackson. He changed his name the moment the British rediscovered the island. My mother admires his cowardice so much, she did the same thing.

Usage of He in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Steve O auditioned for a show on his first day of class. He got the part of a dad. A pretty blonde got the part of the mom. Steve O was suddenly living the dream. He went head over heels. At a party, he got down on one knee just to propose a dance. Everything was going well. Until the girl's upperclass boyfriend intervened.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that isn't trying to win an award, but what you make of it is up to you

To ensure the veracity of Captain Orbitz's responses the Amazon enlisted the telepathic services of five of the most well-respected Astrazeneca in the Orion Arm. They did not come cheap. Shielded behind glass in five separate compartments they listened intently to Orbitz's thoughts. When Orbitz was asked directly if he was an exian, he said no. The megacepahlics buried their fingers into their huge pulsing temples. They concentrated and said almost in unison, "This is truth."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written in honor of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

A finger up the bum was Steve O's favorite cure for a headache. It wasn't always like that. He used to enjoy digging his thumbs into the tops of his eyeballs. At least in the morning. By the afternoon it was all about the booze. A half bottle of wine did the trick. By night it was a decent wank. If he was sober.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that doesn't take itself seriously, but what you make of it is up to you

I considered jumping off the balcony. The thought of Khalifa and the pain he suffered stopped me from doing it. A phone rang. I didn't realize it was mine. I thought it was a neighbor's. The hooligans had taken everything else. I picked it up just in time. It was the Education Ministry. They wanted me to report in person immediately.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that represents the truth without being factual, since the details are my creation

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
