She, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's studying the practicality of compounding his jumbo-sized Fiction Corpus with a fairy tale about cheap art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the concept of upholding English as a global lingua franca. I do question the enervatingly inanimate process by which English is taught.Pointer

Polishing a person's dexterity with a language isn't like producing a hotter furnace. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue cannot be divided from the philosophical currents of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A proper instructor must prepare a plan for introducing it; the insightful student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language based on a particular corpus, a body of written works of varying scope and consistency. Such a corpus might contain everything from a book about literature to some real romance fiction. I lost many a night laboring on my "handsome" Fiction Corpus to form a peculiar sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have categorized them, reshaping them - not just to teach the English tongue but to promote the human spirit, and to prod that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Europe, the summer of 2011. Twelve countries. 46 days. One car. One tent. One man. One woman he's just met.

As an artist, from the beginning of my adult career, my work had been devoted to the problem of body acceptance, a goal that I would later learn was shared by a whole community of people called naturists, a humble portion of which I discovered residing in Poland, a country whose cultural conservatism does not lend itself readily to forward thinking. One of those forward-thinking Polish naturists happened to be Margo.

I was American. Freshly arrived in Europe and the new owner of a '97 Ford Escort made in Germany. The only thing I had to complain about was the fact that the owner's manual was in German. She was from Poland, and a German-language owner's manual for a car bought in Poland wasn't the only thing she had to complain about. Something as small as that didn't even register.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word She

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word she in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word she, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word she is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of She in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

The ball bounced off the plate, which fell down but didn't break. We laughed.

"Wait a minute," said Sapper. "Watch me break it." He propped it against the wall again. This time, from three meters away, Sapper threw the basketball. BOOM-CRACK! went the Plexiglas.

"Congratulations," we said, and ran.

Several days later, we were at her house again. Her father came out, walked right by us without saying a single word, left, came back, and then gave Jesus a dirty look.

The next day, we went back to her house and she said, "I can't play with you boys right now." So we left.

Then, a few days later, we saw Sapper outside her house playing with the girl, so we joined them. But then, the girl left: all of a sudden, she said she couldn't play anymore.

Verses 223-228 from the chapter called Childhood

I well remember how your father's mother struggled. Once in a while, her attacks were long and devastating, terrifying everybody else gathered around. Her skin would turn blue: she would look like a heavenly creature in hell, surrounded by devils, gasping for God's great air as if we lost mortals were choking her with our own breaths, bellowing out carbon oxides, unclean combinations of two otherwise beneficial elements: diamond air, which would form to cut through our hearts whenever we started feverishly running around to help her. We were dragons breathing smoke, as far as she was concerned. Give me air - she must have thought - not smoke! We would crowd around her unnecessarily; your father would look into her eyes, caress her face - but she wouldn't stop gasping. More than one innocent bystander must have jumped, as I often did, at the prospect of gallantly locking lips to give her air, only to sit back in self-conscious superfluity, cringing at the thought of one's potential motive.

She was so blue!

Verses 43-44 from the chapter called Adolescence

Your father's aunt lived in Alexandria, Virginia - close to Washington, D.C. She lived in a very nice house in a very nice neighborhood. My mother and I lived with her for many months. I called her my aunt, but she was really my godmother. The word for godmother is unnecessarily complicated in Polish, being equivalent to the term, 'baptismal mother,' so I was told to call her my aunt. My aunt was a lawyer; my mother was not. She cleaned houses.

Verse 92 from the chapter called Childhood

Jesus waited impatiently for several hours until his aunt came to pick him up; his parents, at the time, were back in Poland. When she saw him, she ran to embrace him as tightly as possible. She said, very quietly, "Your mother is sick." That was all she said; the trip home was silent.

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

It's just that I'm afraid you're spending too much quality time at Indiana's house. An address like Holland Park may not be enough to mesmerize you, but it's certainly enough to distract you and leave you susceptible to other, more corrupting influences. It's certainly enough to make me question a man like Albert. Who would abandon such a crazy wife in a place like Holland Park? She is exactly the type of desperate middle-aged woman who thinks herself impetuous and takes her fleeting beauty to a place like Annabel's. And why? For spite? Yes: she would go there to spite her husband, unaware of the consequences before it's too late.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 11, Guidebooks, Paragraph 3

Upstairs, on the other hand, was no laughing matter. There was a small crowd of gentlemen surrounding the door to the ladies' room. It was locked, and poor Christie was locked inside. I asked what the big problem was, and somebody told me the lock was jammed. I couldn't restrain myself: "Doesn't get much use, does it? Don't worry Christie, we'll get you out of here. These gentlemen aren't trying to kidnap you. She's a British subject, you know: that's why she hasn't kicked down your door - that's the way we do it in America."

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 7

I quipped that Nike should never be recorded, unless of course one were involved with interdisciplinary studies. "And an honors student," I laughed. "Nike is capable of extremely fascinating bits of completely random knowledge." I began describing how exasperating it was, but she interrupted, saying that Nike was exactly what she needed: so far conversations had been too small and private, and if there were anyone who could subtly bring together several different conversations into one, it was definitely Nike.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 8, Partying with Intellectuals, Paragraph 2, Clauses 7-11

I decided we should go and check, asking one of the nearest gentlemen whether a lady could possibly find a toilet in such an establishment. "Certainly," he said, "it's at the top of the stairs." But I smiled. "Is that so?" I said. "Well, you certainly didn't make it easy enough. Our friend left half an hour ago and she still hasn't come back. I'm sure there's a gentleman's bathroom around every corner." He had to laugh in agreement.

The woman kicked. She tried to break free. Luka wouldn't let go. He got the fingers back inside. It was so warm. He thought, "Yes." He took the fingers out. He tugged the woman's wimple. He stuffed a bit of it into her mouth. He held it. He yanked on the veil. The crown came tumbling off. He placed the end of the black fabric on the woman's mouth. He wrapped the whole thing around. The other end was still pinned to the crown. The under-veil got into his face.

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

MS. JACKSON: She won't mind.

LESBIAN: Mind your own business.

FLETCHER: This is my business.

MS. JACKSON: Stop it: both of you.

FLETCHER: The way you two carry on: it makes me sick.

LESBIAN: You think you're any better. You lost your virginity to a married woman.

FLETCHER: How did you know that?

LESBIAN: She told me.

FLETCHER: You told him? How did you know?

MS. JACKSON: Your father-

FLETCHER: My father!

– ACT I, lines 983-992

FLETCHER: You were trying to sneak away.

MS. JACKSON: Your father-

LESBIAN: What's the big idea?

MS. JACKSON: Listen.

LESBIAN: Your mother and I can do whatever the hell we please.

FLETCHER: Whenever the kids aren't looking.

MS. JACKSON: Fletch!

LESBIAN: Your mother is a grown woman.

FLETCHER: Why doesn't she act like it?

MS. JACKSON: That's enough.

– ACT I, lines 973-982

FLETCHER: I lost my virginity to a married woman. Her husband was abroad - had been for several months. She did plan on joining him, but she loved sex - she admitted it - more than she loved her husband. Then again, I didn't really know the man. Maybe he was the same way. Maybe he was a scoundrel. Some women are just crazy. I was doing work on her balcony at the time. She would undress in front of me through the window. She even let me watch her masturbate. I was around eighteen years old. She was forty. I had no idea what to do. I couldn't do anything, anyway. I was surrounded by my crewmates. When we finished, we packed up and we left. I didn't see her for several weeks. In due course, we bumped into each other at one of the local pubs. She asked me how I was doing. I told her I was fine. I bought her a few drinks. She asked me to take her home. I did. On her front porch, as she was removing her keys from her pocket, she dropped something.

ALICE: A condom.

FLETCHER: How did you know?

ALICE: I guessed.

FLETCHER: Is that something you've done?

ALICE: I've never done it. I assume, if you want to get your point across, that's the most powerful way.

FLETCHER: It's true. I couldn't help myself. I had to go up to her room.

ALICE: Did you like it?

FLETCHER: I loved it - as it was happening. When we were finished, I felt as dirty as a pig. She wanted me to come every Wednesday afternoon like clockwork.

ALICE: Did you?

– ACT I, lines 642-651

(LUKE looks confused.)

FLETCHER: You look confused.

LUKE: I thought she meant that she likes to root women.

FLETCHER: Kokomo? I don't know.

LUKE: I don't mean exclusively.

FLETCHER: Just occasionally.

LUKE: Or in tandem.

FLETCHER: Right.

LUKE: I was talkin' to Grey Goose about it.

FLETCHER: What did he say?

Usage of She in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

"Sara Lee," said Orbitz Nombre Trois.

Orbitz Número Dos smirked. "She's a spy," he said. "The Amazon plants her on the ship. He knew I can't resist that blue tint. Those perfect blue nipples."

"Is she the saboteur?" asked Orbitz Number One.

"No," said Orbitz Nombre Trois. "She is innocent."

"I'm up to something, aren't I?" asked Orbitz Número Dos.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written out of respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The most idiotic actress in the history of cinema has got to be my mother. She was born to a family of Ukrainian farmers living in Romania. Or so I thought. It turned out it was the other country. The one whose name is always different. Moldavia. Moldova. Bessarabia. It doesn't matter. She married some kind of commie who ended up defecting to London. This was not my father.

– from “The Most Idiotic Actress,” a fictional story based on true events as related to the author

The first lesson of womanizing had been learned. It was not to be the last. At another party Steve O set his sights on the pretty redhead playing his daughter. She taught him his second lesson. A womanizer must respect not only his elders but his peers. As Steve O came back with her beer he found her making out with the freshman playing Steve O's son. His name was Adam and he was pretty.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that doesn't strive towards anything lofty, but what you make of it is up to you

The ship exploded. As Orbitz hurtled towards the tesseract he realized why he was doomed. The radiation from the explosion was travelling with him. It would accompany him all the way back in time. The small amount that had sterilized Heather Mills would be enough over the course of the journey to kill him. He also realized how he had lost Sara Lee. In his moment of gloating behind Heather Mills's back he had given her a chance to read his mind. She knew she was sterilized. She knew infecting Sara Lee would be futile. She did it anyway out of spite. She did everything she could to alienate her. It was justice. Orbitz had robbed Heather Mills of her only love. She would make him pay the same price.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
