Someone, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is wrestling with the soundness of compounding his voluminous Fiction Corpus with some akbar birbal stories translated into modern English; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the practicality of administering English as the world's second language. I do reject the uninspiring route by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Beefing up a person's expertness with a language isn't like creating a sharper arrowhead. A language - a common language - is not just a tool that you can learn to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue can't be pulled from the professed knowledge of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to rob her of its cultural context. A good teacher has to develop a technique for introducing it; the bravest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a particular corpus, a body of written language of various size and consistency. This corpus may include everything from a book about literature to a bunch of fiction book titles. I burned many candles creating my "sensational" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have indexed them, reformulating them - not just to teach the English tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to goad that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Someone

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word someone in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word someone, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word someone is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Someone in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

We stopped bothering him. Sapper circled back to the birch grove. I lingered. Most of the hunters were a hundred and fifty meters away near the edge of the forest. Some of them climbed into a white electric truck and drove back down the way we came. The rest disappeared. I could hear their dogs barking in the distance. By the time I ambled my way to the forest's edge, I saw them two hundred meters away, walking around someone's cornfield. I wondered if they had shooting rights. There were fifteen men with barking dogs walking down one way, while another group spread itself down the other direction. Each man began covering about thirteen meters worth of cornfield. They were going to flush it out, whatever it happened to be. Wild boar, I guessed.

"What's going on?" asked Sapper from behind.

Verses 53-54 from the chapter called Bohemia

"You're missing the point, Sapper. No one's going to be giving anyone any blowjobs. We're not having sex: we're staging it. Don't you understand?" said Jesus. "Someone's still going to have to get it in the ass."

"Not me."

Verses 101-102 from the chapter called Security

Jesus jumped. Like the wolf, he leaped onto the man's chest, embracing his arms, and, leaning his head down into his neck, as if to kiss him, he grabbed a hold of his tender flesh; his teeth squeezed muscle and vein (the sternocleidomastoid to be exact, and the jugular) which Jesus ripped from the man's neck. Blood was everywhere. Flesh hung from your father's teeth. The man dropped in screeching cries of anguish. Jesus leaned over and took the gun. The door to the Accountant's room flew open. Jesus fired. The man who had taken his letters fell down. The light in the Accountant's room went out. Jesus picked up the lamp (the one he had dropped before he leaped). He threw it into the Accountant's room. He turned around and crouched. The doorman appeared from around the corner with a flashlight. Jesus fired. The flashlight fell down. Jesus got up and turned back. The lamp was still lit inside the room. Jesus approached obliquely. Someone's leg was trying to reach the lamp from behind a desk. Jesus put the rifle's butt by his shoulder and shot the leg. Somebody cried. Then, someone shot, but to no avail. There were two people inside that room at least. Jesus slowly crabbed among the tied-up soldiers. There was a man inside: behind the desk, aiming a pistol through the doorway. Jesus smiled: the man couldn't see a goddamn thing. So Jesus shot him in the head. The other man lifted himself up from behind the desk, swinging his arm around and ready to shoot anything. Jesus shot him in the heart. That was it: five men dead: four guards and one Accountant. Jesus carefully checked every corner with the flashlight. That was it. Everybody else must be robbing the bank, Jesus thought. The real terrorists had no idea. Jesus smiled; he chuckled: there was no one else - just him, and a platoon. Perfect.

Verse 277 from the chapter called Arms

Without license to buy more weapons, Jesus had to be very stingy. Not till he signed on with SECURITA did Jesus gain the privilege, thanks to that security firm's contract, of being able to buy whatever he wanted (which the firm even tried to subsidize, but Jesus, more often than not, paid from his own pocket, which prevented his so-called superiors from requisitioning his equipment). In fact, it was during his first few months of tenure with SECURITA that Jesus found Baron Cohen-Krupnik with bullets in his head. Through a fluke, he was the first one to arrive at the crime scene. The landlord who had rented Baron the apartment also happened to be an old friend of Stalin's. Jesus was able to take photographs, which he later used to convince your mother, Zoe Guderian, that her fiancé's family was not up to snuff, not that she ever thought they were (for various reasons), but, after seeing poor Baron with bulletholes in his head (someone she had once had the displeasure of socializing with), she was convinced, despite her better judgment, to continue her relationship with Sacha Cohen-Krupnik, just so she could spy for your father, which she did, with painstaking effort, going so far as to marry the bastard, which your father deeply regretted.

Verse 420 from the chapter called Arms

We went to the other car; it was old and small, but had a diesel engine. Sitting inside, Jesus waited while the Krupnik painted. Using cans of spray paint, he changed his car's color from red to green. Then, removing his license plate, he placed it inside his trunk and found somebody else's (probably someone who was dead). This one he attached.

Usage of Someone in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

We were driving up the Allée du Bord de l'Eau, having turned, I presume, from Anatole Boulevard. Perhaps Nike was looking across the river at something - I don't know. At any rate, it was nighttime and very dark - there was no moon - and yet, I could see Nike's face very clearly. Perhaps a glare from the lights of the console: I couldn't see them from where I was, but, perhaps, owing to Nike's hunched-over position (which he would only relax when he was looking down his nose, at which point, he was leaning back in his chair - but only briefly, as then he would lean forward again), with his body thus contracted, the lights from the console may have been reflecting off his face, concentrating under his brow - but, I suppose, it may have been a reflection from the dashboard, angled as it was towards the driver, or maybe a combination thereof - regardless, there was a distinct glare on his face, and, hollowing out his features, he looked like the devil's minion, or, at least, someone trapped in hell: either a weary traveler misled, or a duty-bound man who was chafing against the fiber of his will.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 2, Clauses 1-4

The second act was beginning. There was a full-length mirror on the stage, and the soprano began singing to her own reflection. "Dis-moi que je suis belle," she sang. Tell me that I'm beautiful. Tell me that someone who loves me will keep loving me after my looks are gone.

I fell. Into the trance of the music, I fell.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 13, Apprehension, Paragraphs 1-2

The next day, Nike applied himself with fresh vigor - but there was nothing to do until the nighttime, so Nike decided he would sit on the Champs-Elysées and wait. He watched all the women go by. It was much easier for him to walk now, and he was not afraid of approaching them. At eleven o'clock, he spotted a girl who caught his fancy - but then he had to shake his head and rub his eyes: he was no longer interested in that (he had to remind himself). But this particular girl was very pleasing. Perhaps she knew something about Basha. Perhaps he should ask her.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 11, The Importance of Knowing Someone's Name, Paragraph 1

MÉL: They keep surprising me: they don't like to show off their habits anymore.

NIKE: Is that right?

MÉL: Yeah, that's right - at least, not when they come for me.

NIKE: Have you ever worn one?

MÉL: Me? No. Would you like me to?

NIKE: Maybe.

MÉL: Well, I don't have one.

NIKE: Neither do I. Do you know anyone who does?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 11, The Importance of Knowing Someone's Name, Paragraphs 11-18

He didn't stop: he kept driving as quickly as he could scan the face of every woman walking by - not an easy task (even for Nike) - one which soon left both his neck and his eyes very tired. Then he'd find himself trailing just one woman, perhaps someone who resembled his prey, but, usually, just someone who caught his fancy. Then he'd have to shake his head and curse: he was looking for someone very specific, and, even if some other women were attracting him, they were distracting him, since he thought he knew exactly what it was he wanted.

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
