They, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is thinking about the notion of complementing his supersized Fiction Corpus with a story about fine art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the feasibility of administering English as a common language for the world. I do doubt the certifiably commonplace style in which English is presented for study.Pointer

Polishing a person's skillfulness with a language isn't like developing a brighter firework. A language - a spoken language - is not merely a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A shared tongue cannot be insulated from the prevailing culture of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a man to recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. An informed teacher must develop a technique for introducing it; the bravest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language based on a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying size and consistency. A corpus can include everything from a biography of the best fiction authors to some akbar birbal stories translated into modern English. I lost many a sleepless night laboring on my "solid" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have dissected them, reshaping them - not simply to teach the English language but to promote the human soul, and to coax that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word They

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word they in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word they, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word they is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of They in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Oh, I'm tired. FUCK. When I'm tired, my voices come back. FUCK CHILD. Don't listen to them. They are stupid. They are vanity. They are meant to be ignored. I write them down only in the hopes that they will go away. If I share them, they will lose their power. They are meaningless, but I obsess: they bother me. And when they bother me, they win. I can't let them win. They are voices; they are meaningless. They are not me. My mind is sick. My mind says those things. I am not my mind. I am me. I don't say those things. My mind says them. It repeats them. No: I repeat them. No! My mind repeats them. My mind says what it wants to say. It has its own life. It has its own power. It controls me. Stop controlling me! I don't want to be obsessive.

Verse 6 from the chapter called Invocation

I will tell you everything from the beginning. I doubt that your grandfather will censor me. I know what he doesn't want you to see. I will keep my secrets. They are dangerous. My secrets are so dangerous, your grandfather kept me under house arrest for the past twenty years. But now that I'm in the infirmary, at death's door, he has shown mercy. I can write to you. And when you come to see me, I will hand you this work: the story of your father's life, the man who loved your mother and Your brother and who would never ever kill them. Your grandfather is cruel, but he is kind: he will let me see you. For twenty years, he has never let anyone see me, except for my beloved Hannah. You will see her! Smile to her! She will smile back. She is like your mother: kind, gentle - she even looks like her: she's half-Japanese.

Verse 14 from the chapter called Invocation

In fifth grade, your father played soccer outside for the first time. Most children spent recess indoors: their parents didn't want to waste their money on air bottles and teachers wouldn't let you play outside if you didn't have one. All the richest kids spent recess outdoors: that's what the richest parents wanted. Jesus was not one to be frustrated. He took an old, abandoned air bottle with a face mask, cleaned it, told his teachers it was brand new, and went outside. Now despite the fact that he was breathing air through a filter without the aid of extra oxygen, he kicked a goal. This goal was so impressive that long after the game was over the fastest, blondest, coolest boy in school came to your father and said, "Hey: nice goal at recess." Your father's friends were incredulous. "How did you do it, Jesus?" they asked. Your father said: "Look: you can do it too. Just use an old bottle." They stared in disbelief. "That's an old bottle?" they asked. "You mean: you didn't just buy a new one?" Your father stared back. "Yeah," said your father, "I cleaned the filters." He showed them how to do it. They looked worried.

Verse 136 from the chapter called Childhood

You don't understand - but you will understand, my child. Your father is far away, but he is close. He is with your mother in space. They are far away. They orbit the sun around Pluto. Their bodies are machines that never break. Their bodies are machines! Their heads have been transplanted! But their thoughts are with you: they are with you. They love you. God loves you. Zeus does not. He is terrible. Do not trust him. He took your mother's head. He destroyed your father's body! AAAAAAHHHH!!! Sometimes my mind spits bile: pure vomit. It feels like

Verse 8 from the chapter called Invocation

Protected by the MTA (the Martian Terrestrial Authority, which was created for the purpose), the nuclear bomb was successfully transported. In the meantime, in cooperation with Panzer-Tank Mining, Yariba Corporation dug a deep tunnel into the base of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system. It's twenty-seven kilometers high! Five hundred and forty kilometers wide! I'm sure you've noticed it. They put the nuclear bomb inside the tunnel and off it went, clearing the most enormous cavern ever made. They drilled holes through the top. They drilled holes through the sides. They laid pipes. They brought water and boiled it. The steam went through the steam turbines, rose to the very top and fell back down again, going through the water turbines on the way back down to the boiler - a gigantic operation. A simple operation! A Martian child could appreciate its magnificent beauty, and, not having to wonder whence that blessed power comes, can look outside his northern window and see that brilliant topographical majesty that gives him light. Blessed Olympus! How young those Martians are when they first learn to fear her power! Give them light, Olympus! Not tyranny! Not shadow and pain! Give them light!

Usage of They in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

It made me wonder what kind of people were giving Luke his reputation these days. They can't be that much different from the ones we knew: no self-respecting woman would ever shag in that apartment - but I guess that goes for men too. In fact, what self-respecting person would ever choose to have anything to do with Luke in the first place? He can't possibly be raping them - the walls are too thin - unless he uses drugs - ah, but let us not speak of that.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 2, Letting It Steam, Paragraph 1, Clauses 6-9

Even if that were fact, and offered as excuse, it would not have corralled the kind of feeling that was now informing my actions. The fruits of my embryonic jealousy now seem inevitable, but at the time they were not, and the relationship did not seem unsteady because only underneath the tranquil surface were we steadily and unavoidably drifting. Sadly, this is something that can only be described in the soapiest of terms: we were slipping, and a stream of obligations was quickly eroding the cake of our experience, to the point that, after several months, I became romantically involved with a certain person, and Macy, absent from sight, was made ever more absent from mind.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 6, Third Party Intervention, Paragraph 2, Clauses 8-11

But my knees - for all their nervous power - they were only capstones on a hollow gate: as the feeling spilled over the wall and began trickling down the channels of my legs, prickling my nerves one by one, they proved themselves feeble barriers, and around my heart I began preparing my defense, for I knew that if that feeling were to reach my heart, I would not be able to control myself. Like the ancient Tyburn, coming down the heath, my feeling gathered force and began flooding the muddy tidal flats of my bowel.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 14, Feelings, Paragraph 1, Clauses 9-11

Exhibitionists: I was not surprised to learn that they were friends. Anyway, Macy was describing an experience he had with Lynnhaven during a trip to Virginia - "Vas eez thees, lynnhaven?" our cousin had to interrupt.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 4, Meeting a Man in Austria, Paragraph 4, Clauses 4-6

"They don't like to be very cold, but they don't like mild winters either. Sometimes you have to chill them to make them grow at all. And they don't last very long, not compared to other trees like bananas; sometimes you have to replant them after eight years." The poor girl was stepping in mud, the kind in which Nike thrives: "Bananas are not trees," he said, "they're herbs.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 8, Partying with Intellectuals, Paragraph 5, Clauses 3-7

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

"They make you use a condom."

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring poverty of the mind

"What's it like? Do people watch?"

"Not necessarily, but most of the time."

"I don't think I could take it."

"It's not for everybody. I wonder where else to send you. Don't go to one of those American bars: they'll rip your pants off. They make you buy champagne. You end up shitting money for nothing."

"What about the street?"

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring not-so-beautiful people

At the last moment, blond hair stepped onto the bus. The long bangs hid the owner's face. Shrouded by the partition, they carefully climbed the next step behind another smarmy salesman. The length of the hair revealed itself. It flowed past the creature's shoulders. Shephard clenched his fists. It had to be a woman. It didn't matter if she were ugly. As long as she weren't on the wrong bus, he wouldn't have to kill himself.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a man who never really grew up

"Of course. That's for your own good. If you don't like it, you'll need to find a real junky. They can't afford to come here-to the forest? You'd have to go to Nation Place. You wouldn't like it. They're all about money-not like these girls."

"They are not what I call girls."

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring poverty of the body

Nike closed the door. "Welcome to the back seat of my car. I hope you find it comfortable." He turned on the interior light. "Where would you like to go?" Silence. "How about the Reine? Driver, take us to the Alley of the Daisy Queen-the scenic route." Luka turned on the engine. He put the car in gear. They drove.

"What's your name?"

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring the streets of Paris

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

MS. JACKSON: When were you in Fiji?

LESBIAN: Not too long ago. I stayed in a hut just like the villagers do. It was part of a hotel on a secluded beach. It was absolutely gorgeous. The island is very touristy though - more than some of the others I've been to. The dance I'm thinking of was part of the welcoming ceremony. It occurs to me that despite being technically part of Melanesia, the dances of Fiji have much in common with Polynesian dances. There's that same emphasis on the word and the use of the arms and the hands.

ALICE: Where have you seen Polynesian dances?

LESBIAN: In New Zealand.

ALICE: Is New Zealand part of Polynesia?

LESBIAN: Yes.

ALICE: I didn't even realize.

FLETCHER: You assumed they were all tropical beaches.

LESBIAN: When I was on the islands of New Guinea and New Britain, I saw some very different dancing.

MS. JACKSON: Do tell.

– ACT I, lines 404-413

FLETCHER: 'What are you saying? That you would kill me? That you would even think about doing it? That you would sneak up on me in the night and kill me the way you killed Tetahiti?'

ALICE: 'I no say tat.'

FLETCHER: 'The way they killed your baby's father: with an axe?'

ALICE: 'No, Toc.'

FLETCHER: 'I think I've heard enough for one day.'

ALICE: 'Prease.'

FLETCHER: 'I don't need an axe blade to wake me up.' What do you think? Do you like it?

ALICE: I do.

FLETCHER: I came up with it after I had a similar experience.

ALICE: There was a girl you wanted to marry?

– ACT II, lines 91-100

ACT II

SETTING:Same.

AT RISE:Same.

KOKOMO: Clean. Clean. Clean. That's all I do around here. I'm supposed to be the cook. I didn't think I'd have to be the maid and the launderer and the nanny, too. Whoever said Polynesians are like children didn't know the English. They say the streets of London are paved with vomit. Nowhere is it worse than there. That's a kingdom full of stupid, dishwasher-buying buffoons. If I didn't know any better, I would say it's an island thing. Upolu is nothing like this. We have peace and quiet. I wish I could be there now: swimming in Fagaloa Bay, climbing Mount Fao, running my feet through white sand, growing breadfruit and pawpaw. If only I weren't alone in those dreams.

MS. JACKSON: (off) Kokomo!

KOKOMO: Yes, Ms. Jackson.

– ACT I, lines 1384-1389

ALICE: I was taken aback.

FLETCHER: By whom?

ALICE: I was hit on by the nearest policemen I could find. I had just been mugged and middle-aged married policemen decided to hit on me.

FLETCHER: What did they say?

ALICE: They said I was too cute to be mugged. That's what they said.

FLETCHER: They weren't lying.

ALICE: I was so disappointed. They didn't want to help me. They didn't do anything except hit on me.

LESBIAN: They were married.

MS. JACKSON: And bored.

FLETCHER: What was the mugging like?

– ACT I, lines 147-156

LUKE: At his place.

FLETCHER: Today?

FLETCHER: After Kokomo left.

FLETCHER: What was she doing there?

LUKE: The two of them were yabberin'. That's why we didn't get to drink much.

FLETCHER: What were they saying?

LUKE: I don't know.

FLETCHER: What did it look like?

LUKE: It looked like something shonky was goin' down. At first, Kokomo was ropeable. I thought old Grey Goose was gonna cark it. After she calmed down, she looked perfectly dismal, like she had been sprung in the act. Your old man leaned in to whisper. She kept turnin' her head to either side. She got cranky and left. That's when I asked him - by way of a mug: "What's with the girl piker?" - why didn't she stay for a drink? That's when he told me.

Usage of They in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I'll never win with my wife. I used to support her all the time. Until she told me to stop. She said, "Don't coach me. I don't need a coach." So I stopped. I listen to my wife. When she apologizes I'll be there to hear it. I'll accept. That's what husbands do. They listen. They accept. God help them. They clog the toilet.

– from “The Backed-Up Toilet,” a literature story based on reality as I remember it

I considered jumping off the balcony. The thought of Khalifa and the pain he suffered stopped me from doing it. A phone rang. I didn't realize it was mine. I thought it was a neighbor's. The hooligans had taken everything else. I picked it up just in time. It was the Education Ministry. They wanted me to report in person immediately.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that represents the truth without being factual, since the details are my creation

"Let's stick to the models," said Proctor. "They've got a union we can contact."

Bob laughed. "Figure models have a union? How do you know?"

"My wife, Elizabeth," said Proctor. "She used to be a member. A long time ago."

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring an artist's model put in a weird position

Branca lives in California now with her husband. Her old torch-bearer, Fr. Rebelo, lives outside Boston. I'm not sure when they last saw each other but it couldn't have been long ago. Rebelo does weddings for the family. He just did one for Lima child number ten. I don't remember any of their names. In fact, old Sir Lima announced at that wedding that henceforth a Lima marriage would not be valid unless performed by Rebelo. That's one of those chummy deals that's kept Hong Kong in business through the ages.

– from “Beautiful Branca,” a true story that has a few facts mixed up as far as I can tell

The wedding was postponed. Steve O got a chance to look deep into his heart. He explored his feelings. Adam helped Steve O realize that enjoying a finger up the bum had nothing to do with being gay. If Steve O had romantic feelings for Adam, as Adam might still have for Steve O, there were ways in which they could develop those feelings in a non-sexually threatening way.
