You, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to contemplate the prospect of amplifying his remarkable Fiction Corpus with a history of educational reform; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the feasibility of implementing English as a universal language. I don't believe in the formalistic model by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Refining one's dexterity with a language isn't like pioneering a safer gunpowder. A language isn't merely a tool that you can learn to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A spoken language can't be segregated from the professed knowledge of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching people to recite English is to cheat them out of its cultural context. A capable educator has to find a way to introduce it; the prudent pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written language of various scope and consistency. This corpus could contain anything from a book about literature to the best fiction novels ever written. I burned many candles laboring on my "titanic" Fiction Corpus to form a peculiar sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have indexed them, reformulating them - not simply to teach the English language but to promote the human soul, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 6 Answers the Question, "Who?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. Friday, or Children's Day respresents the "Who"

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word You

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word you in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word you, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word you is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of You in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

If your father had known that, he might have had his lieutenants wait: they were his only family, and, despite their self-respect, they were definitely not Capitalists - but neither was your father, for that matter - or at least, he didn't feel like one. In real terms, he was very much a Capitalist, a recent Capitalist; but no matter how recent one's fortune, if there was a fortune, there was a Capitalist. New Capitalists were not made all the time - in fact, for the established Capitalist, the only thing more exciting than new capital was a new Capitalist. You never knew what to expect. He or she might destroy you; he or she might make you very rich: he or she might make you a Supercapitalist. Then you would thank him or her. But if he or she destroyed you, then you might just commit murder. And the penalty for killing a Capitalist was death. The penalty for killing a Supercapitalist was bankruptcy and death. It was known to happen quite often, even among Capitalists.

Verse 21 from the chapter called Childhood

About five hundred years before I was born, man set foot on Mars. He brought materials with which to build, tools with which to dig, a furnace to keep warm, fuel to burn, and food to eat. He walked, like most men, on his own two feet. He brought instruments with which to study, cereal to grow, and batteries to keep his various electric motors moving. He brought radio transmitters and television. He brought a suit, and a carpet. He brought drugs, soap, and water. Above all, and most of all, he brought with him air.

Verse 1 from the chapter called Childhood

All I see is spinning, my child: elements of red, green, blue - memories of Earth - Mars - misery. There is no peace in my mind. It spits out bile. FUCK THE EARTH it says. FUCK MARS! They are my voices. FUCK VOICES! They torment me: stop me from writing. But I must write. There is no time left. I thought maybe your grandfather might fail - maybe Julius might win. But he stays inside his volcano. He is at peace with himself. FUCK JULIUS! God bless Julius. He is a good man - a simple man. WITHOUT ZEUS, HE IS NOTHING: HE IS NOT KING. Fuck Zeus: the machine-god. Where is he? He abandons us. He is wanton. No: he is calculating. Zeus the Almighty. FUCK GOD. No! Do not curse God. God is great. God is good. Zeus is not God.

Verse 1 from the chapter called Invocation

Usage of You in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I asked her to bring this up casually in conversation, so that I could elaborate on the compliment, ever so innocently - but she was afraid to do it, owing to her quality of English, which was still not very good; but she agreed and after a bit of rehearsal we met with Macy on the weekend. Once we were settled down at a certain restaurant, I learned that Macy was from Boston, that he was acquainted with you, having met you our freshman year, and that he was here in Austria for the summer for no other reason but that he wanted some culture - that, and the fact that his parents had met here in Vienna in nineteen seventy-two and had fallen madly in love.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 4, Meeting a Man in Austria, Paragraph 3

Strolling through the empty hall, I laughed at the mess of teasers on the floor and all around - various clubs advertising their many-storied attractions, bars with Wednesday drink specials, free coke with pizza. There was another kind of mess in Luke's apartment - the absolutely filthy kind. Modesty forbids me from describing it; I was compelled at the very least to throw the trash away and gather up the various personal effects.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 2, Letting It Steam, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

There are no best things, no best people and no best friends either. Oh my dear brother: those who judge themselves or others according to hierarchies of quality may do so, and with great authority, but only if they acknowledge the arbitrariness of ranking. You know, brother: things I once thought so precious have now paled; people I once felt so strongly, so physically without even touching: they are now like chipmunks or squirrels in the backyard - tall grass itching at one's leg - arousing very little in the way of interest.

Branca lives in California now with her husband. Her old torch-bearer, Fr. Rebelo, lives outside Boston. I'm not sure when they last saw each other but it couldn't have been long ago. Rebelo does weddings for the family. He just did one for Lima child number ten. I don't remember any of their names. Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
