Mine, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's considering the prospect of expanding his substantial Fiction Corpus with another fictional book; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the prospect of utilizing English as the world's second language. I do question the customary way in which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Polishing a person's familiarity with a language isn't like introducing a safer match. A language - a living tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A shared language can't be segregated from the prevailing culture of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A worthy instructor has to develop a strategy for introducing it; the perceptive student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of written language of various size and consistency. This corpus might contain anything from a book about literature to some real hard boiled fiction. I suffered many a sleepless night forging my "glorious" Fiction Corpus to form a special genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have reduced them, reshaping them - not merely to teach the English language but to reveal the human spirit, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 1 Answers the Question, "Whose?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. You can remember that the first type of word answers the question "Whose?" by asking yourself whose day is the first day of the week. Sunday, or Victory Day, is a day for everyone to celebrate art.

Help Raise Self-Esteem With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Mine

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word mine in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word mine, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word mine is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Mine in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Jesus's uncle was a complete bastard. He said all kinds of stupid things around town. He said ridiculous things that people had trouble believing: for example, he claimed he had a diamond mine in South Africa somewhere. Sometimes it was Brazil. The truth was, he was a drunk and a filthy liar. He was supposed to pay ten thousand dollars for a zoning adjustment. He claimed he had paid it.

"Where's the receipt?" they asked.

Verses 356-357 from the chapter called Adolescence

But Sadatmo was stupid. Dhagbod was one of the largest fossil fuel shippers in space, but the company, under Sadatmo, had spent ten years and almost all of its revenue in a fruitless war with A/COMP, its rival, which was founded, in the years following Yellowstone, by a man named Shiza Rahpa Lavi, a talented army officer from Earth. During the second explosion of Yellowstone, known as 'The Second Coming,' Lavi stepped down in favor of his son, Moe Shiza Rahpa Lavi. But Moe Shiza was forced by his enemies to seek American aid, which only came with the promise of opportunities to spy on Mars, and with which Moe Shiza was able not only to consolidate his power, but also to accomplish massive growth in transportation and water projects. This success proved to be his downfall, as growing revenue from petroleum sales accentuated Moe Shiza's autocratic leadership: he was unable to hide his unfair distribution policies and other corrupt methods from the average employee. People were so upset, they chased Moe Shiza Rahpa Lavi right into the arms of the Americas. Even after a bunch of disgruntled A/COMP workers captured fifty Americans, the U.S. government refused to let him go. There was chaos in A/COMP. Some kind of hostile take-over was imminent.

Verse 120 from the chapter called Childhood

In those days, frustration was rampant. Insecurity was plaguing the masses. People were afraid. Private security firms were ascendant; only the rich could afford them. The most prominent, SECURITA, gained a government contract. They began spying on people. They began arresting them. Sometimes, they got the hard jobs, and sometimes, they got the easy ones (when the terrorists invaded Poland, they were placed in charge of the southern frontiers - far away from the action). There was injustice everywhere: an atmosphere of pressurized vengeance. There was absolutely nothing that the average man could do. People didn't trust the law: they feared the courts and hated the procuracy - even rich men resented it. The police were often helpless. Armed forces fostered suicide.

Verse 332 from the chapter called Adolescence

Inside a fake loudspeaker, two guns would be hidden. One was going to be the standard SECURITA weapon with silencer - eminently traceable - and the other was going to be the stolen gun I bought from Goofy. The former was meant to wound and kill; the latter was to be left behind as a sign.

Verse 1146 from the chapter called Security

Now as your grandfather has no doubt told you, Abrams Tank was the first Panzer-Tank on Mars. He brought with him a suit (of course) and a whole mining company. His mining company, Panzer-Tank Mining, started the very first successful iron mine on Mars. Abrams Tank was very successful. After his son took over the mine, he started a very successful glass factory: Glass Panzer-Tank Style. It made very good Martian glass. This led to a construction company: Panzer-Tank Construction. At the age of seventy-five, Abrams Tank built the Glass Pyramid which now marks the center of Centropolis. His son became the first governor of Mars.

Usage of Mine in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

NIKE: Yeah, we'll have another round, thanks. So seriously, Andre, you should think about your game plan, man. What are you gonna do?

ANDY: I'm not gonna do anything.

NIKE: Yeah, but you're already going to the hospital for her.

ANDY: What does that mean?

NIKE: Your presence.

LUKA: Do you like this woman?

NIKE: The guy's as good as buried.

ANDY: Yeah, of course I like her.

NIKE: And you're hangin' around.

ANDY: She's a good friend of mine.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 10, The Male Dilemma, Paragraphs 36-45

Sometimes I felt I was the only person he was really mocking. As long as he neglected me, of course he was not mine; he was unwilling to amuse me alone and this was the seed of my jealousy. When his stories would offer a sober judgment, breaking the spell of amusement, I would not distinguish his honesty, the proof that he was never simply pandering to taste, that he was perfectly aware of the things he was doing, the effect he had, the minds he swayed.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 5, Falling in Love, Paragraph 5, Clauses 1-3

I took the jacket off the hanger and threw it on top of mine. I took the pants off and threw the hanger. I put them on carefully. They were all right: not perfect, but they were fine; I put my shoes back on - standing up straight, the pants were fine.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 9, Intoxication, Paragraph 5, Clauses 5-9

I know that I've always been playful, which is something that a modest person does not usually reveal until well acquainted with another. Perhaps it was the misguided intimacy - the forceful breach of inhibition - that tightened and then relaxed our excited bodies. I suppose not everyone enjoys being playful, but I believe that boy was thrilled, and perhaps he, thinking me a student, sincerely hoped for another, less ephemeral encounter. But I knew it would not happen, and he, poor fool, may have dreamt of it last night. I certainly have had dreams on less hopeful prospects. How odd it is, how strangely odd, that the basis for romance and friendship must seem so fantastically random, and the requirements which permit these things to blossom, the structure of tastes and considerations, being so irrationally determined, or else so deliberately particular, how odd indeed that any relationship take strong root and thrive at all.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 3, Ambushing a Man, Paragraph 3

For you, dear sister, I remain devoted, but concede I must, for these events are disrupting: these dreams of vice and violence are the product of many things, including circumstances beyond my control, of course, but, above all, I think I must blame this exhausted imagination of mine. I think writing has weakened me: this constant application of my mind, this researching of recent memory, living through things I already saw and did by imagining them - if only I could imagine them better than when I first saw them! But these things are no clearer now than how they once were. They are simply more tiring.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 1, Relations Between Siblings, Paragraph 3

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Junior decided to rummage through the office after hours. There being nobody to ask for directions, it took him a while to find the elevator. He got lost on the second floor. Stumbling eventually into the minerals department, he searched the vicinity for photographs. He kept seeing the same African beauty. "This must be her," he thought to himself. "She's quite a fox."

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring one man's vices

Tatum laughed. She gave Uzumaki an icy stare. She said, "It seems a bit more sinister than that."

Uzumaki nodded. He said, "Pat was a decent man. He was a friend of mine. He started gambling. When he said he met your ex-wife in a casino, I wasn't surprised."

"Tell me something I don't know."

"He was extorting bookmakers on the far side. It was his accomplice you saw on the video."

"What about the dirty Manga from Pf Chang?"

"She laundered money."

"How?"

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a moon colony for aliens

Sargon was dropped. The porters fled. The bodyguards' heads rolled to the ground. As pathetic as the situation was, the king seemed determined to defend himself. He braced his body. He lifted his sword. It was no match for the bloom of Atar. The king's head rolled.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a frank discussion of the purpose of life

Thankfully, there were no prominent photos of her with a young man. She was pictured in academic garb, standing next to a pleasant looking older couple, and even caressing a horse. "She likes horses," thought Junior. "I should invite her to my stud farm."

Tatum shook her head. "I'll stay here for a while."

"Are you sure? There is a risk to your health with no weight room."

"There's an ergometer on the tenth floor. There's a kitchen and supplies. I'll be fine."

"You will forgive me for repeating my question. Are the woman and the child safe?"

"A friend of mine drove them to Pf Chang."

"Mr. Channing?"

"That's right."

"You'll be wanting to keep that gun?"

"If you don't mind."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

(GREY GOOSE enters unseen.)

KOKOMO: The CIA? It was probably Fletcher: naughty boy. As if my heart were not enough, he had to go and steal himself another pincushion. Has he tired of needling mine? Has it grown so soft? Am I a red guava rotting on the stem? Oh, pick me, Fletcher Christian! Pick me! Before I start pouring out my insides!

– ACT I, lines 226-226

GREY GOOSE: That's nice. My wife always used to say that jasmine tea would turn her on.

FLETCHER: (off) Turning her on!

GREY GOOSE: Wait!

– ACT I, lines 1182-1184

MS. JACKSON: He's in there-

FLETCHER: How did my father know?

MS. JACKSON: Your father is in there-

FLETCHER: Why are you telling strangers how I lost my virginity?

LESBIAN: I'm not a stranger; I'm a guest.

MS. JACKSON: Everybody knows about it.

FLETCHER: What kind of a place is this?

LESBIAN: It's your home.

MS. JACKSON: Listen.

LESBIAN: If I could, I would gladly make it mine.

– ACT I, lines 993-1002

FLETCHER: You thought Norfolk had a checkered past. Being a former prison colony's prison colony is nothing next to Pitcairn.

ALICE: I would never have imagined it was like that. I thought it was a paradise.

FLETCHER: I'm writing a play about it - specifically about the woman who chopped off that man's head. She's an ancestor of mine. Maybe later we can go over a few scenes.

ALICE: I'd love to.

FLETCHER: If your neck doesn't still hurt.

ALICE: I'm feeling much better now, thank you.

FLETCHER: If you strained it, you strained it. I have to say, you have surprisingly little tension.

ALICE: It's my honeymoon. I've been having lots of sex.

FLETCHER: You shouldn't have reminded me.

ALICE: Why not?

– ACT I, lines 626-635

MS. JACKSON: What about my heirloom?

GREY GOOSE: What heirloom?

MS. JACKSON: The one you stole.

GREY GOOSE: I didn't steal anything.

MS. JACKSON: Don't lie to me.

GREY GOOSE: I didn't.

LESBIAN: I did. I packed it away in my bag. I have two tickets for tonight's flight: one for me and one for you. Come. We'll explore the world as your ancestors did: the English and the Polynesians. They went from west to east; we'll go from east to west. We'll show the lost and the lovelorn what true devotion means. We'll scale Victory Peak in China. We'll sail the Punjab. We'll get lost in Gargas Cave. We'll bathe in the hot springs beneath Mount Hekla. We'll catch a Broadway show. We'll do some shopping at Shinjuku Station. We'll do anything your heart desires. All you have to do is liberate yourself. Let your passions run free. Someday we'll return to your native land. It won't ever be the same again. Nevermore will you be shamed. Woman, you'll have made the entire world yours.

MS. JACKSON: Nameless Pain! How am I to deny a penitent husband - newly birthed in remorse, in truth, in love, and desirous of similar gifts from me, his lawfully wedded wife, who, for so long, and with so many tears, kept watch over this heretofore seemingly endless and vain gestation - yet relish this sudden appearance of life: this infant curiosity: this foundling whose love demands more than my adoption could ever give? Oh, Homo: a thousand hearts couldn't beat as strongly as you have made mine beat. This is my home. I can no sooner leave it than change my body for that of a man. The world is yours; go out there and take it. Please leave me in peace. I beg you.

LESBIAN: I'll go. Though it pains me more than female circumcision, I'll go. I'll go because I love you.

Usage of Mine in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The Amazon was not convinced. He wanted spies. He wanted somebody Orbitz could not resist. He asked for and received approval for an arousal profile. It determined that Orbitz's taste for the opposite sex tended towards the slighty exotic. His taste for men closely matched his own mostly human pedigree. Out of all Alliance staff members in the local database two scientists fit the profile perfectly. A human astrobiologist named Pfizer Microsoft and an astrolinguist of mostly Eridanian extraction pursuing a medical degree. Neither had according to their records any reason to be loyal to Orbitz. They had never met the man. The Amazon made sure. He first trotted Doctor Microsoft before a board of inquiry. The Astrazeneca listened as he vehemently denied being a Wiki-en. They said, "This is truth." Then the Amazon brought out the Eridanian. She had been born and raised in the Solar System. She had never visited her ancestral world. She was young. Innocent. Her skin beautifully tinged with blue. She said her name was Sara Lee.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Some not so unattractive female cousins of mine took me to see a movie. I got excited when I got to the theatre. Instead of popcorn and soda the bar was selling pickled peppers and beer. They even had cocktails. The movie was less suprising. It was an American comedy that was released in the States at least a year and a half earlier. I was glad there was no dubbing. Just subtitles. Until I started watching and I realized I was laughing at the jokes a full five seconds before anybody else. If at all. I was supremely embarrassed once again. Until the cocktails kicked in.

– from “The Most Idiotic Actress,” a fictional story based on real life as related to the author

I considered jumping off the balcony. The thought of Khalifa and the pain he suffered stopped me from doing it. A phone rang. I didn't realize it was mine. I thought it was a neighbor's. The hooligans had taken everything else. I picked it up just in time. It was the Education Ministry. They wanted me to report in person immediately.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that represents the truth without being factual, since the details are my creation

"She went too far. Khrushchev was a fan of national communism. He wasn't an imperialist by choice. He wanted to be a farmer. His first wife died in a famine. He sent people to Siberia to develop millions of acres. He tried to build specialized farming towns. He wasn't focused on politics. Hungary could have done things quietly behind his back. He never would have found out."

"You're saying she should have cheated."

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might calm one's sense of unease depending on your outlook

"My English is good. That's true. I went to school here in the States."

Indiana smiled. "I mean to say you speak with a clarity of purpose."

Nike feigned offense. "Are you saying I have an accent?"

"Not as bad as mine."

"Your accent is beautiful."

"You should hear me speak French."

"You should hear me speak Hungarian."

Indiana laughed. "My language is difficult."

"You'll have to teach me."

"It takes practice."

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
