Their, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to contemplate the thought of amplifying his voluminous Fiction Corpus with even more fiction book titles; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the idea of exercising English as a global standard. I do question the prevailing routine with which the English language is taught.Pointer

Beefing up a person's handiness with a language isn't like making a more accurate catapult. A language is not merely a tool that you can learn to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A living language can't be torn from the philosophical currents of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. An informed teacher has to create a strategy for introducing it; the smartest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a particular corpus, a body of written works of varying size and consistency. This corpus may include anything from a book about literature to some truly brilliant halloween stories. I created my "glorious" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have scrutinized them, reformulating them - not just to teach a language but to describe the human soul, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 1 Answers the Question, "Whose?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. You can remember that the first type of word answers the question "Whose?" by asking yourself whose day is the first day of the week. Sunday, or Victory Day, is a day for everyone to celebrate art.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Their

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word their in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word their, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word their is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Their in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

On his way out, Jesus said, "Whose graves are these?" They were made of black marble; their names were effaced.

Verse 243 from the chapter called Adolescence

"She's got the blues," your father would have to say, and it was true: every time she began to feel better, there was less and less hope that it would last; sooner or later, she would have to be attacked by status asthmaticus; there was no escaping its mercilessly tightening grasp, no way of preventing her bronchial tubes with their mucus-forming glands from swelling - what specific allergen could possibly have caused her pain? - when a breeze, a bad smell, or a change in temperature would send her coughing, and make her throat secrete its mucinous poisons, drowning her in her own mucus and consigning her to long hours of hacking, wheezing, and gasping for air - long, tiresome hours, which inevitably sent your grandmother back to bed for months - how depressing it was.

"Hey, Jesus: where's your mother at?"

Verses 47-48 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Doesn't mean they don't want to steal it back from me - just like the Germans. Look at the house I built: four families could live here, if only it were finished. I was Commandant of Police for thirty years. I know what kinds of things people are up to. My superiors couldn't fool me: I could tell who was good and who was bad and who was in between. Just like in the government: I know which of those deputies are German-lovers. I can tell by their faces. This country has survived, not thanks to them, but thanks to small farmers like me.

Usage of Their in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

The caption read, as translated from French: "Among the several hardships faced by Hungarian women, there is a shortage of cloth. It is believed to be part of a Soviet conspiracy to liquidate the country's natural leadership. The rising price of cloth has resulted in rising hemlines, and, although Hungarian women are to be praised for their economy, the situation has led to a sizable increase in traffic accidents, serious head injuries and even gorings." Suddenly, somebody was coming down the stairs very quickly. I put the magazine on top of Konrad, and slid them both back onto the shelf. It was Olympia; she said hello to me and then quickly disappeared into the kitchen. I turned my attention back to the bookshelf.

NIKE: Yeah, but the opposite's not true: that's the freaky thing. Because the queen: she holds all the sperm in her little sack, and she can decide which of her babies are boys by holding back the juice. But sometimes, the worker bees develop their own organs, and they become like secondary queens. Now most of their babies are male, but, like, one percent or something become female. Now what's up with that?

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Gog proceeded to conquer the people of the valley. There was little resistance. Taking their tribute, Gog said, "I am Gog, son of Gomer, son of Japheth, who disembarked from the boat of Noah. I seek the high watchtower behind which the sun hides at night, about which the stars revolve, and from which all waters flow. Who among you knows the way?" The people claimed ignorance.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a world full of dragons

Much fiction surrounds the names Gog and Magog. According to my understanding, they were not giants or blood-thirsty monsters. They were not fallen angels. They were one man and one woman. They apparently loved each other, though they often quarreled. Whether or not they made up half their adventures is beside the point. They were definitely the first people to circumnavigate the world. The evidence for that, though circumstantial, is overwhelming.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a barbarian

Gog sympathized with them. If the armies of Rusas were helpless against Sargon, what chance did he have? He allowed his chiefs to decide their own fates. Many chose, despite their qualms, to continue.

They marched southeast. They skirted the kingdom of Rusas. In the hills, they encountered a people named the Hayk. Their speech was almost intelligible. They said their king was named Bagadatti.

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

ALICE: I suppose they left.

KOKOMO: Without drinking their tea?

ALICE: Something must have come up.

FLETCHER: Oh, krikey! They're unchaperoned.

– ACT I, lines 807-810

FLETCHER: There is a house on Norfolk that no longer stands. Its eaves of pine were reduced to ash. Its worthy frame that I helped build collapsed in a huge fury of smoke and fire that I helped start. I watched it burning from the top of Mount Pitt. I was too ashamed to go any closer. I was there in the room the night my father planned that terrible justice with his friends. I heard them goading each other into teaching their fellow man not to cooperate with the Australian government. It was madness I heard from their lips. They were the drunken lips of dogs waiting to pounce. I said nothing. I did nothing to stop them. When the police came, I lied and said I knew nothing. I climbed Mount Pitt out of morbid curiosity to see what I had wrought. That image of the house whose beams I placed - whose trusses I tied - in the distance - engulfed in flames - is seared upon my mind. I did nothing to stop it. Do you know how sorry I am? If I told you that somebody died in that fire, would it be in your power to forgive me?

– ACT II, line 183

FLETCHER: I'll have you on the sofa bed if it comes to that. All I have to do is run out there and tell those girls to get ready for the night of their lives. Get the money!

– ACT II, line 251

FLETCHER: What?

ALICE: You wouldn't stick me up in one of your precious pine trees, would you?

FLETCHER: Not if you stop.

ALICE: What's the matter? Don't you like your native tongue?

FLETCHER: You have no idea how many times I've had to repeat stupid phrases for guests.

ALICE: I'm sorry. I keep forgetting that you're a-

FLETCHER: What? A native? That's alright. I'm white and I speak English.

ALICE: It's funny, isn't it? Norfuk: half-Tahitian, half-eighteenth-century English.

FLETCHER: It's got its charm.

ALICE: I wonder what Pitcairn was like when the mutineers got there with their wives.

– ACT I, lines 602-611

(FLETCHER and MS. JACKSON exit.)

LESBIAN: Now my passions are roused! In this room lies my chance to consummate my love for her. How wonderful a thing is a parlor! Only a lecher seeks his victims in their own beds. Normal folk must wait for respectable opportunities to have their lusts filled. My landlady knows as well as I that, once the rest of the house has gone to sleep, having respected my privacy, I shall have reason to wake her - or she me - whichever the case may be, depending on who can resist temptation longer. With looks such as hers, I doubt I can.

Usage of Their in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The Amazon assigned a top-notch surveillance unit to watch Orbitz's every move. They watched him clear out his flight deck locker. They watched him go to the gym one last time before turning in his passcard. They watched him share a smoke with the old-time janitor. They tweaked their earpieces as they listened to him tell stories about the janitor's great-great-grandfather who was shining floors and taking names the last time Orbitz was around. They fell asleep. The Amazon found out. He went crazy. He warned them that Orbitz was capable of anything. He had a thousand year head start. He was the richest man in the universe. He spoke hundreds of languages. He could have treasure buried on every planet in the Orion cluster if not the entire Orion arm of the galaxy. They were sleeping while Orbitz was on a transport to Earth.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

"I don't know," screamed John. It looked like he was about to lose his mind.

"Guys," said Proctor. "Do you mind giving me a moment." Bob and Simmons started to wander off. Proctor watched them. They were taking their time. John leaned in. "What's going on?" he whispered.

"You tell me," said Proctor. John's eyes searched desperately for some understanding. Proctor seized his arms. "You tell me," he repeated.

John dropped his head. "I'm sorry," he murmured. "I slept with them. I slept with them all."

"When?" asked Proctor.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring an artist's model put in a weird position

Pfizer wandered around the ground floor for a while. Aimless and distracted. He thought about hopping into a suit and swimming through the sky. In a few years it wouldn't be possible. The atmosphere was getting less dense. Pfizer hit himself in the head. Trivialities. It was the phosphane lions he had to worry about. Their habitat was disappearing. If he couldn't prove their indigenous nature they would never survive. Only his samples would remain. As long as some unscrupulous administrator didn't toss them out. Along with Pfizer's career.

– from “Titan's Reign,” a science fiction story in which all hope is absorbed even when it's traveling at light speed

Nobody had to be bribed. There was no brain-washing. To all those people who changed their minds. You can't take it back. You can't say he's a hero one day and decide the next day you were wrong. That's not fair. Especially when nothing's changed. Except the fact that I'm not today's hero. I'm yesterday's hero. And the war is back on. That's why they curse me. Cause I'm not all-powerful. I'm not the one solution to all their problems. People are capricious.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on family values coming straight out of Roman mythology

To ensure the veracity of Captain Orbitz's responses the Amazon enlisted the telepathic services of five of the most well-respected Astrazeneca in the Orion Arm. They did not come cheap. Shielded behind glass in five separate compartments they listened intently to Orbitz's thoughts. When Orbitz was asked directly if he was an exian, he said no. The megacepahlics buried their fingers into their huge pulsing temples. They concentrated and said almost in unison, "This is truth."

Natural + Life

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
