Otherwise, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to contemplate the idea of strengthening his heroic Fiction Corpus with really inspiring stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the prospect of honoring English as the international community's second language. I do reject the uninspiring scheme by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Beefing up one's knowledge of a language isn't like producing a safer bridge. A language - a living language - isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to wield with a greater amount of precision. A spoken tongue cannot be segmented from the professed knowledge of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A worthy teacher has to develop a technique for introducing it; the discerning pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a specific corpus, a set of written works of various scope and consistency. This corpus might include everything from a biography of fiction writers to many examples of fiction. I burned many candles creating my "solid" Fiction Corpus to form a special sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have assembled a million words and I have categorized them, reformulating them - not just to teach American vocabulary but to promote the human spirit, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

Though I was born in Europe, I had been brought up from a young age in America, living in states as diverse as Nebraska, Ohio and Connecticut. I was taught American values and saw reality from an American perspective. She was born and raised in a village in Poland. She went to work in the nearest town. The nearest city seemed like the center of the world. The American perspective was not something she was ever planning to see.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Otherwise

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word otherwise in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word otherwise, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word otherwise is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Otherwise in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"It was big enough to cushion your fall," said Jesus. "Otherwise your tailbone would hurt."

Verse 527 from the chapter called Security

Your grandfather was ruined. After years of devoting himself to 'justice,' proving torts of various size and scope, the career plaintiff was himself turned into a reprehensible, grossly negligent and most liable tort-feasor. He was made to forfeit whatever damages he otherwise would've gained in favor of the other parties to his wife's estate. Jesus, for reasons never made explicitly known to him, was not a party.

Verse 63 from the chapter called Adolescence

These were only thoughts of momentary fascination. On the whole, Jesus pursued his work with interest. He did not test God. He applied himself and his men always with reason. When he entered St. Elizabeth's church all by himself in the middle of the night when there was no electricity around and killed the seven men hiding inside by stabbing their throats or otherwise, it was the most reasonable thing he could think of. When he sat on Sand Island waiting for Stalin or one of his other commanders to report, there wasn't anything else he could reasonably have done. He had already shown his men how to do it; now they had to go and do it: bravely - that's all. To the extent that they were unhindered by their own selfish desires, or the selfish desires of non-combatants, they were successful, and Jesus prosecuted his personal war against terrorism with admirable results.

Verse 6 from the chapter called Bohemia

"They've got a bouncer," he said, "who stands in front of the door to the stairs non-stop. He's a big one. He doesn't even need to check a list. He knows everybody who's allowed up inside the lounge or whatever. New people have to be introduced always - no matter what - even if you're part of a group and you're having all kinds of fun, he's not gonna let you just sneak on by. I've seen it. The deejay booth's all the way on the other side of the dance floor, but I've seen it. All I have to do is flash the LED lights. Then that whole place back there lights up like a goddamn carnival. Otherwise, it's too dark to see anything.

Verse 231 from the chapter called Security

Jesus stood against the wall for what seemed like an eternity. The man was still peeing. This was it, Jesus thought. This was meant for him - there was no denying it: this was a gift! From the Devil or the Lord, from Fortune's famous wheel - there was no difference: this was a gift! Jesus had to accept it. All the things he had ever known, all the lessons he had ever learned, all the decency that was ever beaten into him told him that he had to accept it. To do otherwise would've been impolite.

Verse 618 from the chapter called Adolescence

ANDY: Yeah, I noticed the bottle. How much did that cost?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 9, Intoxication, Paragraphs 106-109

My dear sister: I had a terrible dream last night. It started early - right after I finished writing to you - when I began tossing and turning - and lasted all through the night. The dream was a protracted one; many things took place but these things took longer than necessary. And I was aware of time being distorted. I saw how things - which otherwise take place in quick succession - were being strung together separately - like photographs developing - one by one dangling from the twine of unconsciousness - as if the events themselves were brief - captured in a single moment - but time itself was stretching and stretching till morning broke. And despite the light caressing my face, I awoke unhappily, knowing that I should not have gone to bed so feverish: that whole day yesterday was spent remembering those tantalizing things, those quietly torturous things you just read. I was reliving them, and if they weren't bad enough the first time, I was doing so by a dying man's bedside.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 1, Visiting London, Paragraph 1

Hungry people appreciate that rumbling: it is something that momentarily fills the revolving emptiness; one is reminded of one's fate, but that person may still relish the largeness, the otherwise hidden proportions of her emptiness, as the rumbling presses against her walls and reverberates.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 8, Loneliness, Paragraph 3, Clauses 5-6

NIKE: Right: but they're looking for evidence because the woman refuses to testify. She won't press charges: do you realize that?

INDIE: Yeah, right: 'cause otherwise you'd be in jail.

NIKE: Well, not necessarily me - I mean, it was my car, but that's beside the point. What kind of a person wouldn't press charges after being raped?

INDIE: A really good nun.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 5, Talking Through A Problem With A Friend, Paragraphs 26-29

Great sinew that grips the crest of the pelvic girdle - at the threshold of ilium - whence many great muscles start their journey, such as gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, his three vasti (lateralis, medialis and intermedius): four great ships whose massive hulls you, sartorius, have the privilege of escorting down man's thigh (cuddling them, wrapping yourself over and across them) until you fall spiraling down the inner side, inserting yourself at the tibia, that shimmering place behind which the robust and shapely gastrocnemius makes his dwelling: the great propellant, whom the ancients framed with gleaming buskins, which, connecting with the humble soleus, comes down to the very heel of man: that splendiferous tuberosity! that beneficial growth which takes the weight of our standing, which balances our otherwise feeble attempts at uprightness.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
