Than, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's deliberating on the possibility of beefing up his towering Fiction Corpus with a fairy tale about a fiction magazine; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the idea of honoring English as a universal language. I don't regard highly the certifiably commonplace style in which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Perfecting a person's adroitness with a language isn't like developing a brighter lantern. A language - a common language - is not just a tool that you can teach yourself to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A common tongue can not be sequestered from the professed knowledge of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching pupils to recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A good teacher has to develop a plan for introducing it; the insightful pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of written language of various size and consistency. This corpus may contain anything from a book about literature to some prose fiction. I suffered many a sleepless night forging my "whopping" Fiction Corpus in order to form a distinct class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have strung together a million words and I have ordered them, reshaping them - not just to teach a tongue but to promote the human soul, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Than

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word than in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word than, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word than is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Than in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

There was a young man, a friend of a friend of Jesus's, who hanged himself after having an argument with his girlfriend. No less than a week later, his younger brother, who had been extraordinarily devoted to him, followed in his footsteps. That was very strange.

Verse 366 from the chapter called Adolescence

If not for my belated quest for satisfaction, they might never have been found. I was more than determined to avenge my sister's death by destroying whatever it was that was waiting behind that back door. I had no idea that I was about to find the tools of that destruction, not its object.

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Indeed, upon entering the Travelers' Club, I was pleasantly surprised by all the preparations. The buffet was rather large and impressive, so was the wine. There were many servers, more than I had ever seen at any regular lecture. They came by so frequently that I was on my third glass by the time I removed my coat.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 4, Clauses 1-4

She is to blame for my illness. But she is not alone. I blame her husband as well. I accuse the pair of them. They have both conspired against me. They are both responsible for the inflammation of my memory, for the dwarfing of my consciousness. In the face of recent events, I have been supremely humbled. First, I was invited, and then, I freely entered into something much larger than myself: a world, a life shared by these two. A marriage, a beautiful marriage, when it's healthy and complete, sanctified by Church and united by God himself, is not a safe place for a human observer: it is too large a corporation, too overwhelming - especially when one must witness its final destruction. Then the immensity of the affair is made apparent: for only in passing will such immensity be seen. Otherwise, it stays mostly invisible, like the great horizon.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

Randy was always talking to him in golf metaphors. Ann was also ambitious. Instead of golf, she used the feminist approach. If either one of them caught wind of what he was doing, they would gossip. If the chief operations officer found out, he would tell Dorothea. That would be a disaster.

The game was disastrous. The vice-presidents kept ignoring their spindly point guard. When Junior passed him the ball, he would carefully dribble it. By the time it bounced back, it was already gone. Sometimes his own teammates took it.

"Way to call the fast break," they yelled. "Hey, Harry. What do you think? Should we try a pick and slip, a pick and pop, or a pick and roll?"

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

(GREY GOOSE exits. ALICE and FLETCHER enter with scripts in hand.)

FLETCHER: Thank you for doing this. I appreciate it immensely.

ALICE: It's my pleasure. I love supporting new plays and new playwrights. Is this a comedy or a tragedy?

FLETCHER: I suppose it's more of a romance.

ALICE: Which part am I playing?

FLETCHER: You are Tera-ura. I'm playing Thursday October: Fletcher Christian's son.

ALICE: Cute name.

FLETCHER: He was named after his birthday, despite the fact that he was born on the third day of the week. I guess Wednesday October would've sounded more like a girl's name.

ALICE: Am I a Tahitian woman?

FLETCHER: You're not just any Tahitian woman; you're my ancestor.

– ACT II, lines 31-39

LESBIAN: It's a tiny bug that invades trees and makes them grow abnormal clumps of tissue. It doesn't have to be a tree. I remember my mother's rose-hedge suffering from gall. I had absolutely no idea what it was. I thought it was some kind of strange flower. It started growing these round, fluffy balls of blood-red fiber. I thought it was gorgeous. It has its own name - a beautiful one. It's known as Robin's pincushion.

MS. JACKSON: Oh, Heavens! My pincushion: it's still missing. I'm sorry, Homo. I didn't mean to interrupt.

LESBIAN: It's not a problem.

MS. JACKSON: I don't understand. Who could've taken it?

LESBIAN: Somebody close to you.

MS. JACKSON: Who?

LESBIAN: More importantly, why?

MS. JACKSON: It's only a pincushion.

LESBIAN: I thought it was more than that.

MS. JACKSON: To my family - not to anybody else.

– ACT I, lines 505-514

FLETCHER: Kokomo is a confirmed Catholic. She was filled with the strength of the Holy Ghost.

ALICE: I didn't know axe-wielding was one of His gifts.

FLETCHER: I'll have to ask my catechist the next time we meet.

ALICE: Are you a catechumen?

FLETCHER: I'm an inquirer. Kokomo is my ever patient sponsor.

ALICE: Was that before she caught you?

FLETCHER: I suppose I wanted her to find it. She has a point, as far as art is concerned. Whatever one thinks of its medicinal uses, it can't cure a lack of imagination.

ALICE: The sensory awareness it provides or the perception of time one experiences under its influence can benefit pursuits like contemplation or flower arrangement.

FLETCHER: What's made you such a passionate partisan? Have you partaken of the peace pipe?

ALICE: Occasionally. It's been more often than that. I used to work for a florist. There was never any reason not to smoke. To be completely honest, I accidentally brought some with me.

– ACT II, lines 121-130

LESBIAN: How would he feel if he saw us?

MS. JACKSON: What does it matter?

LESBIAN: It does.

MS. JACKSON: Why?

LESBIAN: I don't want hurt him either.

MS. JACKSON: Is that what you're afraid of? Are you afraid of what people might say?

LESBIAN: That's ridiculous.

MS. JACKSON: Are you afraid of having to stay here on Norfolk?

LESBIAN: I'm not afraid of anything.

MS. JACKSON: Neither am I. I'm not afraid anymore. I'm not afraid of arson or gossip or what people might say if they knew about us. I've been set free from all of those things. I'm no longer afraid of being hurt. Oh, Homo! Do you know what I suffered? It was worse than any prison. The walls were all around my heart. It was like being perpetually pinched. I am grateful to you for saving me from all of that pain. You showed me freedom.

– ACT I, lines 899-908

LUKE: Good question.

FLETCHER: You'd better think it over. There's nothing like a walkabout to clear one's mind.

LUKE: That's the good oil. Fletch: you're a hell of an offsider.

FLETCHER: Thanks. Listen: if you do decide on doing some business, here's the procedure. Do you see that music box? It's the only thing from the family hut that survived the fire. Once it's opened, it will play a tune. Put the money inside. Kokomo will know what to do. She'll thank you for it.

LUKE: It'll have been my pleasure.

FLETCHER: Enjoy your walk.

Usage of Than in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Management, rather than allow any rural route to permanently profit from this massive windfall of mail, decided it didn't have time to settle the issue immediately. Yet dictator Steve the Second somehow found time to drive out to Profile and Login every single day to personally deliver one woman's mail. Until he could hire and train a temp to do it for him.

The rural union filed a grievance. Of course a month was not enough time to arbitrate a local matter. Not with the National Mail Count on the horizon. There were grievances all over.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story that represents things that have actually happened, though the details are fictional

Part of me wished there had been somebody there to witness the whole thing. To back me up. All anybody saw was my knife in her heart. Me holding her in my arms. I would've put me on trial too. Now that I'm safe I can safely say I'm glad I was the only one. It was horrible. I wouldn't wish that scene on anybody. My sister was miserable. She died miserably. I'm thankful I was the only who had to see it. The only one who had to watch that beautiful woman die.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story without that much killing coming straight out of Roman mythology

It must be easy for men like Jeff and Matt to get rid of love. To move on. Their torches must be tiny. I couldn't do it. I would burn for love brighter than a billion arrows. I would rip this rubber shell right off my soul. But I can't do it on a chance. It's too risky.

– from “A Magnum Condom,” a bedtime story to teach children about physical stuff that may or may not work

The hill in question had about a hundred boxes split along two streets both rising in diverging directions from the same point on Profile Road until curving back upon themselves and meeting at the top of the hill in the form of Facebook Terrace. It was formerly under the complete purview of Rural Rural Route 10 until Rural Rural Route 10 was disbanded upon the retirement of Old Man Dickinson and split between Rural Routes 2 and 4. Rural Rural Route 4 received the entire hill to much joy at the turn of the next pay period. Until winter came and the disrepair of Update Street combined with the freezing runoff on Download Street caused much grumbling and more than a few broken mailboxes. Still the money was good.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story that represents real life for some people, though the details are fictional

"You will go to the Nautilus," said Orbitz. He started removing Sara Lee's skin suit. She did the same for him. "When you get there I'll already be onboard." Sara Lee stopped. Orbitz stared mournfully into her eyes. He said, "When you get there I won't remember this. I'll look much younger than I do now."

Sara Lee turned. Orbitz's hands hovered desperately above her naked shoulders. "I knew it," she said. "You're from the future." Orbitz grasped her. He embraced her as hard as he could.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
