To, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to debate the possibility of beefing up his wonderful Fiction Corpus with a fable about art for children; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the feasibility of administering English as a universal standard. I do question the altogether average tactics by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Boosting one's skillfulness with a language isn't like making a safer match. A language - a common tongue - is not just an instrument that you can teach yourself to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A common language cannot be disentangled from the shared logic of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A good teacher must develop a plan for introducing it; the prudent student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of written works of various scope and consistency. They can contain everything from a book about literature to some real fantasy stories. I burned many candles laboring on my "mighty" Fiction Corpus to form a precise kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have strung together a million words and I have cut them down, reframing them - not just to teach a tongue but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to goad that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word To

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word to in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word to, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word to is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of To in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"Oh, quite right. Quite right. Do you interest yourself in gastronomy?"

I smiled. "I like to eat."

"Yes, quite right. Then you must try these," he said, pointing.

"Sweetbreads: yes, I'm familiar."

"Yes. How about these?"

"Those are macaroons."

"And these?"

"I'm Polish, not stupid." Your grandfather laughed. "Yes, that was a joke: thank you."

"Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third," he said, offering me his hand. I shook it.

"Nice to meet you," I said - and smiled, not introducing myself. It was awkward.

"Yes, well, the feeling's mutual."

Verses 38-48 from the chapter called Childhood

Those were not laughing days, child. In those days, there was much hardship. Sixty-eight years before I was born, Yellowstone exploded. Five thousand cubic kilometers of boiling magma came to blanket the Earth, kill mankind, terrorize his animals, and fell his favorite trees. Earth bled, and the sky grew dark. It rained blackness. The whole planet stank like a struck match: burning brimstone, like the Bible says - in other words, black clouds of sulfur: they came to suffocate, incinerate. In faraway places, water turned to steam: it boiled. Volcanic ash came tumbling down. The wind blew steam and hot rock. Millions died; the rest wept black tears.

Verse 72 from the chapter called Childhood

Your father was born in Poland, in the town of Treblinka. He was sent to his aunt for an education. In those days, American schools were the best, and your father's father, a second-rate philosopher, was determined to have his son raised in the United States. Thus, when your father was three years old, he came to live with his aunt.

Usage of To in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

And so, with my hand on his, I laughed. Letting go of his hand, I circled past his still rigid body, noticing the curls of a smile now forming as I, still laughing, began my way down the hall. Within a few steps his laugh was stronger than mine, and I half-turned to see his glowing face and to say, "Sorry, I mistook you for someone else," which made us both redouble our laughing effort. Turning again, I felt him stay by the corner for a while, and I was half-way down the hall before I had the courage to turn around, see him gone, and retrace my steps back to Luke's room. I felt very good.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 3, Ambushing a Man, Paragraph 2, Clauses 7-12

"Well," said Macy, "Lynnhaven was a very famous oyster - it's a river, actually, in Virginia: Lynnhaven. But it got so polluted that the oyster was declared inedible during the Seventies - all thanks to a little something called 'fecal contamination,' which is to say, dog shit - well, mostly dog shit. And, human shit." It was amazing how attractive Macy was when he was talking about shit.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 4, Meeting a Man in Austria, Paragraph 4, Clauses 7-11

I shudder to think of my crude opinion, which now understands that Mr. Macy Williamson was either an actor who did not perform for an audience of one, or else he valued our uncommon intimacy enough to spare me his artifice. If the latter was true, then I was too jealous to understand the compliment.

"Not necessarily, but most of the time."

"I don't think I could take it."

"It's not for everybody. I wonder where else to send you. Don't go to one of those American bars: they'll rip your pants off. They make you buy champagne. You end up shitting money for nothing."

"What about the street?"

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring not-so-beautiful people

The wisp of white moved. She quickened pace. Was she scared? Nikki stepped on a branch. I heard it crack. My heart leapt. I glanced at the figure. She wouldn't stop. Had she not heard? Nike nodded. "By whom?"

"Wait!" She stopped. Nike observed her. "You're very beautiful."

The third day at the school I heard somebody approaching the door. I expected a student or somebody but nobody went inside. There was only the sound of gently crushing grass. I thought it might be a cat. When I looked outside I saw it was an old man. He was walking along the side of the schoolhouse. He ignored my greeting and avoided my eyes. I went back inside. I heard the old man circling around. I decided to start reading aloud from Tolstoi. The man shuffled off.

What are we waiting for? Let's accept it!

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
